Half day trip to 奈良 Nara (采女祭 Uneme Festival), Japan

We didn’t make any real plans for the Kyoto leg of the trip, so we figured we would just re-visit 奈良 Nara on the first day we were in Kyoto since it was close by.

Right after stepping out of the train station, we noticed something was going on, with some folks dressed up in traditional costumes. A quick search later, we realised we had stumbled into the preparations for the 采女祭 Uneme Festival.

We started following the procession… but didn’t get very far before getting distracted by おかにし Niku no Okannishi and its croquette. No regrets! It was delicious!

Since the main festival was only happening later in the evening, we decided to take our time and grab dinner first. We ended up at 紅絲 Koushi, where we had a really satisfying tofu meal with lots of variety. Definitely one of those pleasant finds!

After that, we headed over to 猿沢池 Sarusawa Pond, where the 采女祭 Uneme Festival was centered. It was a lovely spot, especially as the evening set in, and we just took our time soaking in the atmosphere.

All in all, it turned into a really nice half-day trip; completely unplanned, with a few tasty detours along the way 🙂
