Iceland 2014 Day 5 – Surprise!

Beautiful view outside our balcony!

Beautiful view outside our balcony!

Today was our last day in Iceland! We slept in after enjoying the spectacular display of northern lights the night before, and enjoyed the hotel breakfast for the last time. The food had almost no changes in variety during our past 4 days, but was more than sufficient to fill up our tummies. We especially enjoyed making our own waffles for breakfast 🙂 It was also quite hilarious that our favourite breakfast spot happened to be very near the KFC, and we kept checking in KFC on Facebook as our phones kept connecting to the KFC WiFi. So much so that our friends were wondering what was so nice about KFC in Iceland, and why we had to fly all the way there to eat KFC. For the record, we only ate it once :p

[Interesting tidbit: Apparently there is KFC in Iceland but no McDonald’s! There is also no 7-11s, or Starbucks!]

Iceland 2014 Day 4 – Beautiful South Coast

Two days ago, we made reservations for Beautiful South Coast tour with Sterna Travel and indicated clearly that we needed hotel-pickup. This is one of the smaller agents and it became apparent why they remained a small one.

Our shuttle was supposed to pick us up at 8am but we waited for more than 10mins without any sign of the shuttle. We got the hotel receptionist to help us call the number on the invoice. Finally the shuttle arrived after 30mins! Apparently something went wrong with their communications, and we had to take the shuttle to chase after the actual bus!

We finally caught up at a gas station and reunited with the tour. To our surprise, there is only one driver who is also the guide (unlike Gray Line Iceland which has separate persons). The poor driver-cum-guide needed to give instructions, explain the history of the sights, answer queries, and to do all these while driving on winter icy roads!

Woke up a little earlier to have breakfast because today we were going for the Golden Circle full day tour with Gray Line Iceland!

Actually there were 2 Gray Line Golden Circle tours available, with one starting at 7.30am, and the other at 9am. Needless to say, we took the later package 😛

Iceland 2014 Day 2 – Reykjavík

Today was a nua-ing day for us, having spent the previous night in the cold trying to chase the northern light without much success.

We had a late but wonderful breakfast at the hotel and after booking bus tours with Gray Line Iceland for northern lights tonight and the Golden Circle for tomorrow, it was almost 11.30am by the time we left the hotel.

The hotel was an easy 30mins (even though websites say 15mins) bus ride away from city centre (ISK 350 ~ S$3.60/pax), and we arrived at the Reykjavik city centre close to 12 noon.

Iceland 2014 Day 1 – Mosfellsbær, Northern Lights

Hello Iceland!

Hello Iceland!

For once, a trip that food was not the main focus 😛

We took a very early easyJet flight out of London Luton Airport and arrived in Keflavík International Airport around 10am in the morning and it was cold!!! Hubby managed to find the Gray Line Iceland ticket office real quickly while I went to grab brochures, and we caught the bus that was leaving in 5 minutes time. The minute we stepped out of the airport, fresh cold air with a slightly sulphuric smell hit us!

Gray Line Iceland was very efficient and the big bus dropped everyone off at a central point, where everyone was re-directed to the different mini buses to be transferred to our respective hotels.
