We have heard that Vietnamese food in Melbourne is pretty good, and the nearby Paperboy Kitchen seemed to have pretty good reviews!
A little shop that has around 20 high chair seats, it is also very popular for takeaways. Despite being lunch hour, the crowd cleared very quickly.
It’s Ms. V’s last day in Melbourne and she had a plane to catch at noon so we entrusted the decision of her final breakfast to her!
She decided that we should try out Grain Store which was quite near Southern Cross Station, where she would be taking the SkyBus to the airport.
Apparently, many people who were also going to the airport thought that coming here was a good idea too, for there were many customers with pieces of luggage!
After seated comfortably in the beautifully-decorated cafe, we combed through the menu and ordered:
We were back to Lygon Street for a late lunch after visiting the Queen Victoria Market, and saw this very popular restaurant with queues still forming despite being close to 2pm already.
But we were mostly attracted to the humongous pieces of schnitzels that we saw as we walked past the diners seated in the al fresco area that we eventually decided to try it.
We also had to wait quite a while after ordering (approximately 30 minutes), because it was so packed with customers who ordered schnitzels after schnitzels!
At every city that I travelled to, I would make it a point to visit their local markets. Be it Taipei, Hong Kong, London, these are the places that fascinate me and get me excited all the time, where you can witness how the locals go about their daily living and mingle yourself in the buzzing vibes of the market.
On every trip I made to Melbourne, Queen Victoria Market or QVM is the must-go place. And during the winter months, QVM also host the Winter Night Market every Wed night for 14 weeks.
We were lucky to detour to the Winter Night Market before our expensive Japanese dinner the other day. There were fireplaces strategically located throughout the shed area and over 30 street vendors and some of Melbourne’s best designer and artisan stalls made up the lively place where people just gathered, had fun and enjoyed great food and company!
After a satisfying coffee, we continue to walk along Elizabeth Street in the direction of Queen Victoria Market in search of yummy breakfast on Google. That’s when we stumbled upon this description Artisanal donuts and organic coffee in a snug space with chic, minimalist decor, plus takeaway. How can we not be moved by such a description?
And so we strolled into the small Sutherland Street and found this quaint little cafe with only 2 small tables inside, and many customers standing outside sipping hot coffee and munching on deliciously-looking donuts! Kinda reminded us of Ah Zong Mee Sua (阿宗麵線) in Ximending, Taipei.
We slept in today because we had a long day at Phillip Island yesterday, and only ventured out after 10am.
We were just walking along Elizabeth Street, trying to find something to munch. And we passed by Brother Baba Budan again!
This time, I didn’t miss the chance to walk in and got myself a skinny Latte (A$4) to go since there weren’t much pastry choices and we were going to Queen Victoria Market later. And boy, this was the best coffee I have had so far in Melbourne!
I was telling wifey that the first sip of the coffee instinctively tells me if I am going to like this coffee or not; it needs to give me that warm, oomph feeling and not just a meh kind of feel. And this cup from Brother Baba Budan definitely did that. It was smooth, aromatic with the right temperature that just flows effortlessly down your throat exciting every cell along the way…

After a long day trip of feeding pelicans and watching penguins come home at Phillip Island, we were hunting for a late dinner on our way back to Melbourne CBD, and XY brought us to his favourite Korean restaurant, which he said was cheap and good!
This is a simple restaurant in the neighbourhood of Carnegie 16km south-east of Melbourne CBD, with simple decor but serves up authentic delicious Korean dishes with warm hospitality.
As in the case of traditional Korean restaurants, the appetizers came in generous portions and were yummy too, and refillable! It was also fortunate that we came as a group of 5, for the portions of the main dishes were huge!
After we fed the pelicans and toured the Chocolate Factory on Phillip Island, it’s time to find lunch!
A quick search on Google brought us to The Cape Kitchen and we gotta say, the ocean view from the restaurant was awesome!!
This is also a popular place for weddings and celebrations apparently because it offers breathtaking views of the Southern Ocean and coastline with a menu that is focussed on what is in-season as well as introducing unique Australian flavours.
Before the start of our day-trip to Philip Island, we needed to have some good breakfast!
Top Paddock has been the darling of breakfast places since it’s opening (Zomato, TripAdvisor, Yelp etc.), and so here we were!
We took Tram 75 from Flinders Street to East Richmond Station (Stop 11) and decided to take an easy stroll along the straight road past 4 tram stops to this place.
Having arrived around 7.50am, we were a bit early, but they had a section opened up for customers to wait. Strangely they open an hour later at 8am on weekends than on weekdays when they open at 7am.
We were looking for a place to warm ourselves up after a free tram ride back to the CBD area from watching the fireworks display at Docklands Waterfront. We stumbled across this cozy place which was still opened while looking for a cafe, and the French crepes called out to us!
This quaint little cafe is located in a small alley at the end of Port Phillip Arcade and has 3, 4 small tables inside with another couple outside. Google describes it as a Busy, cosy French creperie with a warm vibe, offering sweet and savoury options, cider and wine. And Google is right! The service is warm and people are friendly!
