Joe Black Cafe @Surry Hills, Sydney

2016-08-18-09-25-51Since we only had a Matcha Latte take away (check out the cup on the table) from the small Cafe Cre Asion, we decided to turn at the corner into Commonwealth Street and landed on Joe Black Cafe which had a good rating on Google.

The cafe was very cozy and warm with a very community feel to it. On one of the walls (where we were seated), there was a drawing of a train map that became a very interesting talking point for its customers.

We especially loved the warm hospitality of the servers as they get around to take our orders, fetched and topped up our tap waters. The whole lively vibe of the place just boosted our level of likeness for Sydney on a whole!

Paramount Coffee Project @Surry Hills, Sydney

2016-08-17-10-01-06We decided to check out this popular cafe at Surry Hills that was a short walk away from our apartment.

Located in Paramount House, this was a relatively spacious cafe with high ceiling in an open concept; one can walk through the cafe and straight to other parts of the building. We felt very relaxed here!

After last night’s experience, I took a closer look at the drinks selection and was happy to find that there was also a rather wide range of tea selections and other non-coffee options here.

Since we already had pre-breakfast, we decided to share a main dish 🙂

Brother Baba Budan @Little Bourke Street, Melbourne

2016-08-14-10-37-25We slept in today because we had a long day at Phillip Island yesterday, and only ventured out after 10am.

We were just walking along Elizabeth Street, trying to find something to munch. And we passed by Brother Baba Budan again!

This time, I didn’t miss the chance to walk in and got myself a skinny Latte (A$4) to go since there weren’t much pastry choices and we were going to Queen Victoria Market later. And boy, this was the best coffee I have had so far in Melbourne!

I was telling wifey that the first sip of the coffee instinctively tells me if I am going to like this coffee or not; it needs to give me that warm, oomph feeling and not just a meh kind of feel. And this cup from Brother Baba Budan definitely did that. It was smooth, aromatic with the right temperature that just flows effortlessly down your throat exciting every cell along the way…

Top Paddock @Richmond, Melbourne

2016-08-13-08-28-57Before the start of our day-trip to Philip Island, we needed to have some good breakfast!

Top Paddock has been the darling of breakfast places since it’s opening (Zomato, TripAdvisor, Yelp etc.), and so here we were!

We took Tram 75 from Flinders Street to East Richmond Station (Stop 11) and decided to take an easy stroll along the straight road past 4 tram stops to this place.

Having arrived around 7.50am, we were a bit early, but they had a section opened up for customers to wait. Strangely they open an hour later at 8am on weekends than on weekdays when they open at 7am.

Hardware Société @Hardware Street, Melbourne

2016-08-10-09-28-55

We slept in today because we had a long day yesterday and met up for brunch at this (becoming) very popular cafe. We read that there’s a perpetual long queue here and it would be best to come early.

Luckily, it was a weekday morning, so we only had to queue for a short 15 minutes.

The cafe was not big with only about 4-5 tables on the inside and another 4-5 tables outside. We were assigned the alfresco seats and fortunately there were heaters around and it didn’t felt that cold but we had to keep our jackets on. 🙂

Everything looked good (while we were queueing and observing other people’s plates 🙂 ), but we had limited stomach spaces, so we could only try:

Common Chefs Cafe & Bakery @Sembawang

We were too early for claypot rice (they opens at 11am), so we decided to head for brunch at the nearby Common Chefs Cafe & Bakery, which opened only 2 weeks ago (22 Jun 2016).

Steeple’s Deli @Tanglin Shopling Centre

We felt like we stepped back in time upon entering this place 😮

Very nostalgic decorations, oldies playing, plus the dim yellow lighting, time seemed to have come to a standstill at this founded in 1981 cafe. Service charge and GST did not exist here too! Oh, and only cash accepted, just like the good old days.

We had to order and pay first, before picking any bar counter seat of our fancy. Things were done nice and slow, and our items came one by one, with the staff just passing the item over the counter to us when ready, with a smile. We could also watch them prepare our food and drinks since it was really an open concept; there are no glass windows separating the customers and the stove. One could also browse the available magazines while having a drink. Here were what we tried:

Selfish Gene Cafe @Craig Road

It was such a hot afternoon and we were really melting while checking out the Keong Siak Carnival!

Taking a breather, we popped into the nearby Selfish Gene Cafe for an icy escape!

Cafes along this stretch of Craig Rd, and Tanjong Pagar area closes quite early during the day so although we had walked past this cafe a few times, we had not had any opportunity to try it out. Until today!

Got ourselves a Iced Cafe Latte ($6 nett), and a Iced Chai Tea Latte ($6) to beat the heat.

The coffee was strong and slightly acidic, while the tea was milky and abit on the sweet side, with a lovely hint of spices.

And so we just sat here and chilled till we were ready to face the heat again!

Two Tall Trees @Serangoon Gardens

2016-05-15 14.33.49It was time for drinks after food, and Ms F highly recommended this place!

We ordered a Coffee & Cake set ($10 nett for a $6.50 cake and a selection of coffee/tea ranging from $4 to $5), and I got myself a London Fog Tea Latte ($7).

  • Carrot Cake: A sweet and slightly moist version with plenty of nuts. A bit too sweet for us, but we liked the texture.
  • Café Latte: A strong cup of coffee with slight acidity, not bad at all.
  • London Fog Tea Latte: A blend of vanilla and citrus-flavoured Earl Grey Tea with steamed milk, there was a subtle sweet and smooth swirl of milk and earl grey undertones. I liked it!

There were plenty of food options here but we were too full to try. Maybe next time? 😛

Coffee On The Table @Lebuh Pantai, Penang

What a hot day it was!!!

After trekking to 2 different locations before managing to find some food souvenirs, we went to Coffee on the Table opposite Ghee Hiang to hide from the sun.

Our last cafe in Penang does 3D latte art (additional RM3) for their coffee and chocolate drinks, both hot and cold (additional RM1).

We got ourselves a Iced Cafe Latte (RM14.90+ 10% service charge) and Iced Hazelnut Chocolate (RM16.90+). Pretty pricey 😮 But we were feeling too cui to go anywhere else.

The coffee was way better than the chocolate. The hazelnut chocolate had a strange cloying artificial sweetness, and very little chocolate taste to it. At least the coffee tasted like what it was supposed to, haha.

The free WiFi here was kinda spotty for a while, but was ok for the rest of our chillax session.

But we were most impressed with their 3D latte art which they could do it in iced drinks as well, something we have not been able to find in Singapore!
