韩江鱼汤 @AMK

We always passed by this sliced fish soup stall in Teck Ghee Square Market & Food Centre and there is always a queue. What can be so nice about sliced fish soup. you may ask. And it’s so good it even went on TV recently! So today, since me and my colleague had some time to spare in office, we decided to come here and join in the fun!

The stall is rather simple as with many other stalls in the food centre. Two men were manning it, with one main chef cooking, and the other taking orders and collecting money. Menu is rather simple, there is just sliced fish with bee hoon or rice, and sliced fish head (batang or red groupa) with bee hoon or rice. As I was queuing for my order to be ready (it’s self-service), some regular customers were deprived of their favourite fish head because they ran out of it. It seems that red groupa is most favoured and usually runs out quite early.

The queue took us a total of 30mins with around 10 persons in front of us. The helper would take our order and the main chef would cook bowl by bowl which could explain the long time needed. I ordered a $5 protion which came with a very generous serving of very fresh batang slices, tofu, bitter gourd slices and seaweed. The fish slices, marinated with pepper, were thick and very fresh and cooked to perfection in the soup. The addition of bitter gourd slices added crunch to the mixture. The soup has lots of flavour, and was easy to sip. It did not had the taste of MSG and I could finished till the last drop.

Given that this is in a food centre without air-con, I would not recommend queuing for it on a hot day. However if it was as windy and cooling as what we experienced today, I would not hesitate to recommend that you queue for it, it’s definitely worth it!
