Restoran Chef Fatt 發師傅港式點心茶樓 @Ipoh, Malaysia

Another recommendation by a local, this was a dim sum delight!

There were so many different types of fluffy buns, and we were glad they allow single bun orders, so we managed to try San Yoke Bao, Char Siu Bao and Liu Sha Bao / Custard Bun. The meat filings were yummy, and the custard bun had a layer of pandan kaya which balanced out the custard flavours.

We also tried the Egg Tart which had an interesting tinge of ginger taste, and was not overly sweet.

Overall, an enjoyable breakfast that cost us RM62.90.

We also tried the Crispy Noodles, Fried Spring Roll, Fried Dumpling and Fishballs. Total cost was RM88.30, including drinks. Overall, an enjoyable dinner 🙂

Local coffee places @Ipoh and Gopeng, Malaysia

Ipoh is famed for its white coffee, so we skipped our usual cafes and went in search of white coffee instead.

Chop Kheng Bee Kopisan Kedai Gemuk 琼美茶餐室

From Kuala Lumpur, we wanted to pop over Kellie’s Castle for a quick look, before heading to Ipoh. But we were hungry! Google search recommended this Hainanese coffee shop. The White Coffee (RM3.40 for iced) was super creamy and thick and really perked us up! The toast was super awesome with a perfect balance of crisp and softness of the bread and the savory butter and sweet kaya.

The hometown Fried Beehoon + Egg and Ham (RM2.80 + RM3.70), and Nasi Lemak (RM4.50) had this very homely vibes to them. We also tried this Sticky Rice with Homemade Kaya (RM2.40), which was something similar to Thai sticky rice with mango.

Purple Cane Ipoh Tea House 怡保紫藤茶馆 @Ipoh, Malaysia

We were strolling along when we chanced upon this place and ended up having a lovely tea-theme dinner. Each item had elements of different types of tea, and this was probably the best tea egg I have had in a very long time. Not only was it fragrant, the flavours were well-infused into the tea egg! They do sell the egg spices pack for making your own tea eggs back home, but being lazy us… the staff proceeded to share with us that they have outlets in JB too 😛

It was a lovely space for us to chill out and there was also a variety of products available for purchase.

Restoran Ong Kee Tauge Ayam 安记芽菜鸡沙河粉 @Ipoh, Malaysia

I insisted that we should have horfun for out first meal in Ipoh, afterall, that horfun was the first thing I heard of about Ipoh 😛

There were many places selling horfun, so we just randomly picked a restaurant with air-conditioning. While we were more used to the taste of chicken back in Singapore, we were very impressed by the juicy beansprouts!

Pit Stop at Putrajaya, Malaysia

We made a stop at Putrajaya on our way from Melaka to Ipoh to check out the beautiful Jambatan Seri Wawasan (Seri Wawasan Bridge) and its surroundings.

Recharged at Bencoolen Coffee Putrajaya and shared a small Latte (RM8.50) and small Bencoolen (RM10.50) (with gula melaka/palm sugar). Drinks were not bad, and the space cosy.

We are always on the hunt for yummy dim sum 🙂

Lots of variety to choose from here and generally pretty affordable and delicious. Cost RM49.50 for 3 pax.

Bulldog Malacca @Melaka, Malaysia

We were very happy to find a new place to try out Peranakan food! Prior reservations were required as walk-in were discouraged, and we also placed our orders in advance, ahead of the trip. We loved the ambience here and had a great time here!

We tried the following:

  • Nyonya Pai Tee (RM15): The shell was impressively thin and crispy and not too oily.
  • Sambal Sotong with addition of Petai (RM25 + RM4): My absolute favourite! Hubby found it too spicy so I almost had the entire dish all to myself. It was so spicy, yet so addictive that I could not stop myself.
  • Nyonya Pongteh Chicken (RM10 for small): Gravy was good, chicken was tender. Very enjoyable!
  • Fried Brinjal (RM10): Oh how could anyone make brinjal SO juicy? This was simply awesome!
  • Jasmine Fragrance Steamed Rice (RM2): We shared one rice so that we could try out more dishes, lol!
  • Nyonya Cendol (RM7): After all the various spices, this was a lovely sweet ending.

Note that there was an additional 10% service charge.

Suukee Satay 海南沙爹 @Melaka, Malaysia

Cravings for Hainanese-style satay satisfied at Suukee Satay 海南沙爹!

We tried the Pork (RM1.10/stick), Chicken (RM1.10/stick) and Beancurd Pork Belly 南乳猪肉 (RM13.80/set). There was a minimum order of 10 sticks for the RM1.10 ones, and an additional RM1 for cucumber and onions.

The meats were well-marinated, and the chicken was rather juicy despite looking quite lean. The beancurd pork belly was da-bomb!

The pineapple puree gave the satay sauce a refreshing twist. Very enjoyable 🙂

Coconut Shake and Kuih Keria Gula Melaka @Batu Berendam, Melaka, Malaysia

We saw the coconut shake at Batu Berendam quite a few times during our research for the trip and figured that we should give it a try! We had the Coconut Shake Special (RM4.50) which came with a scoop of ice cream blended in. It was a bit too sweet for us.

We also tried the Kuih Keria (RM0.60/piece) and we gotta say we were delightfully surprised by this little sweet treat! It was lightly crispy and full of bits of sweet potato inside.
