Day trip to 屏東 Ping Tung

IMG_6983We met up with our driver 王师傅 at our hotel 頭等艙飯店高雄‧站前館 Airline Inn – Kaoshiung Station for our day trip to 屏東 Ping Tung at 9am. He was the alternate driver whom 許大哥 (who took us from 高雄国际機場 Kaohsiung International Airport to 東港码头 Donggang Ferry Terminal) offered, as he had a last-minute assignment. We could not help but feel a little disappointed as we thought 許大哥 was really friendly and experienced. While 王师傅 seemed to be rather unfamiliar with this area (and we appeared to have done quite a bit of detours during the earlier part of the trip) he was a very safe and patient driver.

The original NT4000 10-hour (9am to 7pm) plan which included petrol, toll, parking and passenger insurance (excluding entrance fees) was:

酒店出發 > 霧台谷川大橋 > 霧台 > 原住民文化園區 > 山川琉璃大橋 > 涼山瀑布 > 佛陀紀念館或旗山老街 > 回高雄

We ended up extending by more than an hour and we topped up an additional NT500 on our own accord for his patience. Here was what we did:

東港華橋市場 Donggang Seafood Market @ Kaoshiung, Taiwan

IMG20180713121557Once we arrived at 東港 Donggang from 小琉球 Xiao Liu Qiu Island, we went to explore the 東港華橋市場 Donggang Seafood Market. While we had read online that the Donggang Seafood Market was closed on Fridays, at least half the stalls were opened when we were there, including some stalls selling raw chicken and fish.

There were plenty of stalls selling sashimi and seafood, so we picked one that appeared to slice their fish only upon orders. The sashimi was fresh, and we particularly enjoyed the toro and swordfish. The normal tuna was not bad too. We have had better salmon before, and would recommend that instead of ordering the generic Moriawase Mixed Platter (we paid NT500 for our platter), just pick the fish marked as signature, or the seasonal specials.

Overnight stay at 小琉球 Xiao Liu Qiu Island @Taiwan

IMG20180712104057We were finally going on a trip again!

This side-trip to 小琉球 Xiao Liu Qiu Island was definitely one of the highlights of our Kaohsiung trip, and we were so looking forward to it!

We had decided to stay overnight at 小琉球 Xiao Liu Qiu Island as we could only reach the island past noon and wanted to spend more time here in 小琉球 Xiao Liu Qiu Island.

Our flight was scheduled to touch down 高雄 Kaohsiung at 10:40am, and it would take more than an hour to reach 東港码头 Donggang Ferry Terminal (entrance to 小琉球 Xiao Liu Qiu Island) by bus, and we wanted to do the 潮间带 inter-tidal zone tour (scheduled to take place at 1 pm) so it meant that we must make it for the 12noon (or earlier) 25-minute ferry ride. We figured that the timeline would be rather tight, so we decided to hire a driver to bring us to the ferry terminal instead and arrived at the ferry terminal within 45 minutes! After obtaining our return ferry tickets, we made it just in time for the additional ferry service at 11:30am.

Taiwan 2017 Itinerary

IMG_4638Taiwan remains as our favourite short-trip destination!

Despite the slightly more expensive and longer flight as compared to Hong Kong, food and entertainment are definitely much more affordable in Taiwan, and I supposed it helps that we know the language.

We tried to do some different thing every trip, but we also love to revisit old places that brings fond memories to us as a couple… 🙂

Like the picture of 九份 Jiufen on the top banner, a place we love going back to, especially to sip tea on the balcony! Haha…

Here’s what we did in the short 4 days.

ILHA Formosa Cafe @Taipei

(Permanently closed on 28th Mar 2018-see FB post at the end of post)

IMG20171101162855IMG_4773We had a bit of time left before we had to depart to catch our flight, and so we decided to check out a cafe. There were quite a few options in this area, but this one looked more inviting 🙂

With a 拿鐡 Latte (NT140), and 凍頂烏龍 Oolong (NT120), we had a great time just chilling out here.

三多屋爸爸嘴 Sando House @Taipei

IMG20171101125503Our hotel staff recommended going to 華陰街 Huaying Street area for lunch, and we must say, it was a great recommendation!

We had been here during our previous trip, and unfortunately, the 麻醬涼麵 Sesame Cold Noodle stall had already closed down. So we kept walking, till we saw 2 long queues side-by-side, one for 脆皮鮮奶甜甜圈 Crispy Fresh Donuts (Taiwanese donuts that was apparently even better than the big brands), and the other for 三多屋爸爸嘴 Sando House, a place selling value-for-money sashimi.

早餐坊 Breakfast Bistro @Taipei

IMG_4756IMG_4752We were taking a stroll after breakfast, when we were attracted by this 早餐坊 Breakfast Bistro… and had our second (and third :P) 蛋餠 Crepe of the day!

Both the Cheese Bacon 培根起司燒餅 (NT45) and Smoked Chicken 燻雞蛋餅 (NT40) versions were quite good!

Now we really need a good long stroll to walk off everything…

四海豆浆大王 Four Seas Soy Milk King @Taipei

IMG_4749Our first breakfast on the final day was at 四海豆浆大王 Four Seas Soy Milk King along 長安西路 Chang’an West Road which is very near to our hotel.

For NT90, we got ourselves a 豆浆 Soy Milk, 燒餠夹葱蛋夹肉排 Chinese Pancake with Spring Onion Egg and Meat Patty, and 肉鬆蛋餠 Crepe with Meat Floss.

It was always quite satisfying whenever we have this simple local breakfast amidst the bustling busy morning traffic  🙂

And off we go to explore other parts of the city before our flight in the afternoon!

亓家蒸餃專賣店 Qi’s Steamed Dumplings @Taipei

We were chatting with the staff at PK Caffe that we were on our way to check out 陳家涼麵 Chen’s Cold Noodles, and she recommended that we should try out 亓家蒸餃專賣店 Qi’s Steamed Dumplings nearby since we were in this area. We were glad that we took up her recommendations!

We tried the 蝦仁絲瓜蒸餃 Prawn and Luffa Dumplings (NT120 for 8 pieces), and we were wow-ed! Each dumpling was juicy and filled with a generous amount of fresh fillings covered by thin layer of dumpling skin. The luffa complemented the meat well.

We felt so lucky to be able to eat really good dumplings for 2 consecutive days 🙂
