米朗琪咖啡館 Melange Cafe @Taipei

2016-11-01-10-21-45After a relatively disappointing breakfast, we decided to go for coffee to soothe our souls.

米朗琪咖啡館 Melange Cafe was one of the cafes that we did not manage to check out during our previous trip, and it appeared that they actually have 2 cafes in the same lane. We went to the main outlet, but were led to the second one instead, as the main outlet was full.

We were led to the basement, where we were the only customers at this early hour.

  • Black Coffee (NT$130): Normal coffee according to hubby.
  • 馬可波羅 Marco Polo-Boite (NT$170+): I almost choked at the price, but I guess Mariage Frères must be a very famous premium brand of tea to cost so much. This was a black flavoured tea that had a very lovely fragrance.
  • 馬丘比丘 Machu Picchu (NT$110): A lemon-ey cake, we liked the refreshing citrus flavour

Note: There is an additional 10% service charge for dine-in.

Blocs Inc Speciality Coffee @Paya Lebar

2016-09-10-17-47-36We were on our way to Paya Lebar MRT when we spotted this little cafe near the bus stop.

The coffee looks promising, and indeed, the Flat White ($4.20) was strong and smooth! The Matcha Latte ($5.50) could do with a bit more matcha flavour though. For some reason, it felt like drinking warmed milk despite the promising colour.

This was nonetheless, a nice little stop for us before continuing the journey.

In fact, we came here again for a pit stop a few weeks later, this time having a Latte ($4.20) and Hot Chocolate ($4.50). Today’s latte was fragrant, strong and bitter, but just a tad too hot. The hot chocolate was a soothing milky blend that was not overly sweet.

Do check out the wall on how you can order your drinks 🙂

Prodigal Roasters @AMK

2016-09-11-09-18-00It was time to check out this new little cafe!

This was our third attempt to come here because we kept missing the opening hours, haha.

This place had a minimalist feel to it; its layout allowed for a table in the front, and 2 high tables at the end of the shop, with some standing space in the middle. More of a takeaway cafe, but we also enjoyed sitting at the high tables, and watch the world go by.

  • The Miso Cheese Tart ($4.50 nett) here was excellent. We never knew miso and cheese could go so well together!
  • The Paprika, Bacon, Mushroom Quiche (P.B.M.Q, $4.50) was served warmed, and it was nice! There was a little heat from the paprika, and the overall texture was quite lovely.
  • The Latte ($4) was more acidic and less milky, but the strength was just nice for hubby.
  • The Hot Chocolate ($4) was rich without being overly sweet or too heavy; I liked it 🙂

Arteastiq Boutique Tea House @Plaza Singapura

2016-09-09-08-43-46We were in town today and after checking out the whole of Plaza Singapore, the comfortable plush seats here at Arteastiq called out to us!

We decided to try out the weekday set lunches here (available from 11am to 1.30pm) which consists of a main and a specialty tea (or coffee) from $16++ onwards.

We got ourselves The Prince of Monte Carlo ($25++) and Golden Sands Big Breakfast ($24++). For drinks, it was Honey Lavender Tea and Latte.

So what exactly was Prince of Monte Carlo?

Out of the Cake Box @Telok Blangah

2016-09-04-10-28-27We were just exploring this area and found this little local bakery with just 3 tables, but more than 10 kinds of cakes available!

Upon recommendations, we decided to share a baked Jasmine-Yuzu Cheesecake ($6.50), for we wanted something light. We also got ourselves a Flat White ($4.50) and a Tea Wands Chai Masala ($4.50, refillable once).

The unassuming cheesecake was full of delicate jasmine and yuzu fragrance that lingered on after our first bites! The rare jasmine cheese mousse was very light with yuzu bits at the lower half of the cake, and jasmine jelly was sweet and refreshing. The savoury base crust complemented the flavours well. Oooohhh, we were so tempted to have another one!

The tea wand is a clever tea bag that works as a stirrer too! The tea itself was not bad. The coffee was alright.

This place is located in a sleepy HDB neighbourhood, and it was a lovely place for us to just chillax and chit chat. They also offer baking and decorating workshops.

Note: Water is available for free, and credit cards are not accepted here. They have an online shop too.

The Pantry Manly @Manly, Sydney

2016-08-21-08-57-14We woke up bright and early on a Sunday morning and took the ferry to Manly island so as to beat the crowd!

The Pantry Manly sits right beside the ocean and provides a unblocked view of the vastness, and the various activities happening on the beach. It was a bright and sunny day with clear blue skies and the cottage-feel of the cafe gave a very warm feeling against the chilly ocean breeze outside.

  • Baked Egg Frittata (A$19.90): This was very hearty and delicious! Not too dry, not too wet, the eggs and the prosciutto ham, parmesan cheese, rockets and artichokes made a good combination. The tomatoes were so plump and juicy! The baby potatoes were fantastic, as usual.
  • French Toast (A$22): The preserved pear and candied walnut provided a mix of textures to the French toast with cream.
  • Skinny Latte (A$): Hubby enjoyed the strong and bitter skinny latte, which was more acidic than the ones he had for the past few days.

Well Co. Cafe @Glebe, Sydney

2016-08-20-16-18-38We needed a drink after our quick tour of Glebe Markets, and Well Co. Cafe seemed to be a popular option that had been around for quite a while, judging from its rustic and retro decor.

We had a Flat White (A$3.50), which was just alright, as hubby would prefer a stronger version.

My Chai with Milk and Honey (A$4.50) was lovely and smooth even without adding honey! The spice level was just nice, and it was a very soothing drink. The mild honey enhanced the sweetness without taking away the spice. I loved this drink!

There was a limit of 2 hours for the free WiFi here; just check with the staff on how to login. Be warned that it was very slow though. Also, do check out level 2 and the lovely balcony seating 🙂

bills @Darlinghurst, Sydney

2016-08-20-08-44-19We woke up bright and early and took a morning stroll to bills (because so many people kept recommending it)!

This location at Darlinghurst was where it all began in 1993 when Bill Granger, at the age of 24 dropped out of art school and opened his first restaurant.  It quickly became famous for the best scrambled eggs and ricotta hotcakes in town, served at the now much-copied communal table where locals and visitors, families and celebrities sit down to eat together and thrive on the buzzing atmosphere. (from bill’s website)

We reached here before 9am on this lovely Saturday, and it was not very crowded yet. Actually, my cousin had recommended scrambled eggs here, but we totally forgot about it and went on to have our priciest breakfast of the trip.

Edition Coffee Roasters @Darlinghurst, Sydney

2016-08-20-08-24-09We picked up a cup of Latte (A$3.50) on our way (just like what we did when we were on our way to The Rocks) to the ever popular Bills, and enjoyed this bitter and smooth cup!

We could not find the signboard and only knew the cafe name from the cup 😮 Apparently it is quite popular from the reviews on Google, Zomato, Yelp etc. It is also famous for it’s coffee and Nordic-Japanese fusion breakfasts (we saw lots of sesame pancakes!) and it’s clean, white, minimalist decor. Too bad we were on our way to Bills since it’s our last free morning in Sydney.

It was lovely to have a hot drink with us as we strolled on during this rather windy morning.

Brewtown Newtown @Newtown, Sydney

After our lunch at Sydney Fish Market, Ms I brought us to this place that is popular for cronut, a croissant-doughnut pastry invented by New York City pastry chef Dominique Ansel and trademarked by Dominique Ansel Bakery.

We shared a Glazed Cronut (A$5). If you do get a chance to try this, try not to cut it to avoid squashing the layers.

While Ms I thought it tasted like a croissant, hubby and I thought it tasted like a doughnut. Guess it did lived up to its name! Haha…

Hubby thought that his skinny Flat White (A$3.50) was just alright, and it was not very strong. My Winter Iced Tea (A$6) was supposed to be spiced Darjeeling with chamomile, lemongrass, and citrus, but the flavours were quite light. They served sparkling water here which we thoroughly enjoyed!
