De Ocean Restaurant 大洋點心 @Melaka, Malaysia

IMG_7390During our first visit to Melaka many years ago, we had tried dim sum at a famous restaurant, and had good memories about it. This time, we wanted to try another dim sum restaurant, and De Ocean Restaurant 大洋點心 had pretty good online reviews.

Since we were still quite full from breakfast, we had a scaled-down lunch.

The way dim sum was served here was that the staff would bring a tray of available dim sums for us to select. Erm… we gotta say, we were quite disappointed with the dim sum here 😦  The most unique one was the fried prawn dumpling, because the skin had banana flavours to it. Many times, we enjoyed the dim sum experience not because the dim sum was of very high quality, but because of the buzzing atmosphere. Alas, we did not experience this here as well.

Dim sum prices ranged from RM3.50, RM4, to RM5, and Pu-Er tea was RM1.60 per pax. We supposed it could be an option if you needed air-conditioning. Of note, if you do come here, maybe you would like to try the buns, which had pretty good online reviews. However, we were not really bun lovers and usually preferred to try other types of dim sum.

林记沙煲肉骨茶 Restoran Lim Kee @Melaka, Malaysia

We were en-route to our dim sum breakfast, when we walked past this rather popular Bak Kut Teh restaurant seemingly in the middle of nowhere, and so… we postponed dim sum to lunch *LOL*

Service was efficient; basically we were ushered to a table, asked a few questions and viola, our food was served rather quickly… all without seeing the menu 😛

[closed] CK Satey CK鸳鸯沙爹朱律 @Melaka, Malaysia

IMG_7368[Closed]

Just across the road opposite the entrance to Longkang Siham, was this very empty satey celup place. Perhaps because it was away from the main tourist area, but we decided to give it a shot, as we were not feeling up to long queues tonight.

This place advertised itself as using Kangen water, which is alkaline water and supposedly have some health benefits. They also claimed that they make their soup bases from scratch, and did not recycle their soup base, which was definitely one up in the hygiene level. With dual soup base, this place also caters to kids and customers who do not take spicy or peanuts. There was a minimum order of 15 sticks, which amounted to RM15.

We were pleasantly surprised by the freshness of the seafood, especially the prawns and blood cockles! The meat items were less impressive. The satay soup base, while not the super thick type, was still pretty good and satisfying. The chicken soup base was not bad too.

They also sell freshly baked castella cakes here. Seemed like an odd combination for satay celup, but we did see quite a few customers buying take-aways.

Bunga Raya Popiah @Melaka, Malaysia

IMG_7352While waiting to check in our hotel, we went to the nearby Bunga Raya Popiah to get ourselves the Popiah that was famous for its generous amount of deep fried crispy pork lard. At RM5 per roll, it was not exactly cheap, but each popiah was quite huge compared to the usual ones. Each bite came with a good mix of lard and jicama (aka Yam Bean or Bang Kuang), however, the other ingredients were barely noticeable.

We felt that the standards had dropped quite a bit, compared to the very first time we tried it many years ago. Oh well, still worth trying if you have never tried it before. Two persons sharing one roll was just nice for us, as it got a bit gelat halfway eating as it was quite oily. But if you enjoy pork lard a lot, you could probably finish the entire roll on your own 🙂

Cafes in 高雄 Kaohsiung, Taiwan

鬲离咖啡館

Ms K had identified a cafe 鬲离咖啡館 that she wanted to check out. Erm… We were not expecting the 紫薯書本千層蛋糕 Sweet Potato Mille Crepes Book (NT220) to look so unlike a book 😦 However, we could definitely taste the very fragrant and strong sweet potato flavours 🙂 A pity that the cake was served with the middle parts frozen, and it did not thaw much despite waiting.

Night markets in 高雄 Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Despite the relatively short trip, we managed to cover three night markets in 高雄 Kaohsiung 🙂

瑞豐夜市 Ruifeng Night Market

Since we were quite near 瑞豐夜市 Ruifeng Night Market, it naturally became our first night market to visit.

It has been many years since our last visit, and there were some changes to the variety of food available.

We sampled 厨窗卤味 where we ordered a variety of braised vegetables and meat items for NT195. The braised sauce was quite light and the items were not bad.

許記蒸餃 Xu’s Dumpling @Kaohsiung

This was a popular double-storey dumpling eatery. We shared a basket of 10 dumplings (NT90) for brunch and it was awesome!

The dumpling skin was relatively thin and when we bit through it, there was some soup that oozed out. The taste of chives was very distinct, and the meat tasted fresh. We totally enjoyed it!

吳寶春(麥方)店-高雄旗艦店 Wu Pao Chun Bakery @苓雅 Lingya District, Kaohsiung

IMG20180715164752After a street of eating, we decided to take a cab to the famous 吳寶春(麥方)店-高雄旗艦店 Wu Pao Chun Bakery, as Ms K had read rave reviews about it.

We were stunned by the generosity of the sampled baked goods. Basically the staff would slice up the freshly-baked breads in huge portions for everyone to try. Definitely at least 3 times the sampling size that we would encounter in local shops. It was really too much for us that we had to start rejecting samples to the surprise of the staff, LOL!

The breads tasted very good, but the loaves were really too huge for a single breakfast and we ended up not buying any.

郭家肉粽 Kuo’s Rice Dumpling @鹽埕 Yancheng District, Kaohsiung

IMG_7078Another 10 minutes’ walk from the dessert shop 高雄婆婆冰 Gao Xiong Po Po Shaved Ice, we arrived at 郭家肉粽 Kuo’s Rice Dumpling.

By now, we only had stomach space to share one 肉粽 Rice Dumpling (NT30) 😛

Interestingly, the rice dumpling was drenched with a sweet and savoury sauce and peanut powder. There were a mixture of lean and fatty meat within the rice dumpling. We thought it was pretty ok, but were not too used to the sauce.

A few minutes walk down the main road from 鴨肉珍 Duck Zhen, and we arrived at this lovely dessert shop selling awesome 芒果牛奶冰 Mango Milk Shaved Ice for NT100. The mango came in huge chunks and were oh-so-sweet. It was so shiok eating it!
