Black Kettle @Lebuh Pantai, Penang

2016-04-17 11.01.32The weather in Penang is a killer!

So after our sumptuous dim sum breakfast, we went on a Street Art hunt for the awesome and beautiful street arts in George Town.

In the midst of our hunting, we needed to take refuge from the scorching sun. And we happened to past by Black Kettle so we quickly went inside to take shelter!

This modern cafe offers quite an extensive menu, from a whole section of bakery items to breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner items, as well as desserts, coffees, teas and wines for everyone!

The eggs benedict and pancakes photos on IG looks so yummylicious but we were still full from the morning spread so we only ordered:

  • Blueberry Yoghurt Cake (RM8.50++): This was heavenly! It was dense, moist and not overly sweet.
  • Caffe Latte Cold (RM11++): This was saviour to hubby as it cooled him down almost immediately.
  • Honey Lemon (RM8++): This was surprisingly good, as I could really taste the lemon in the drink when most honey lemons were quite watered down… This had a very good balance of honey and lemon, and I loved it.

Tai Tong Restoran 大東酒樓 @Lebuh Cintra, Penang

Another of our favourites back in 2011, we woke up extra early to come here for breakfast!

The food was nothing fancy, but we simply liked it because it was so old-school. It was crowded whenever we walked past, from morning to night.

At 7.30am on a Sunday morning, there were still some seats available, and we picked one that looked most airy.

We loved how the pushcarts would weave through the tables and each lady staff hawkering what they had. You just had to point at whatever you wish to eat, and they would make a mark on the ordering form with prices ranging from RM1.40 to RM11, though it appeared that the weekend specials were mostly RM6.50 each.

Kimberley Street Night Market @Lebuh Kimberley, Penang

2016-04-16 21.34.25We checked in to our hotel on Lebuh Chulia in the late afternoon, and after a good rest in the hotel, we went to check out the night market scene at Kimberley Street.

This street (Lebuh Kimberley) is a major street food venue in George Town and there were many stalls and kopitiams or coffee gardens along both sides of the street at the junction of Lebuh Cintra and Lebuh Kimberley. This street is also just a short walk from our hotel on Lebuh Chulia (part of the reason to stay at Lebuh Chulia!).

Penang street food or hawker food are very affordable food options in Penang. Prices are usually around RM5 to RM6 (~S$2) for a plate of Lor Mee, Hokkien Prawn Mee, Char Koay Teow, Koay Teow Thng, Assam Laksa etc. I am salivating just typing out this list.

Kedai Makan Cintra Food Corner 日本街肉粽茶餐室 @Lebuh Cintra, Penang

2016-04-16 18.24.11We are back in Penang!

We had gotten off at Komtar Bus Terminal and making our way to our hotel from there.

When we were almost reaching the hotel, we spotted the rice dumpling shop that we went to back in 2011. We were now back for more!

  • Special Golden Dumpling 雙黄加料大肉粽 (RM7.90): Densely packed glutinous rice with 2 salted egg yolk goodness, there was also plenty of fatty meat… Very sinful but delicious!
  • Famous Yam Cake 驰名芋糕 (RM2.90): The aromatic yam flavour hit us before we even took a bite out of this smooth yam cake, awesome!
  • Herbal Tea 罗汉果 (RM2.50): Served cold, it was a refreshing drink that was lightly sweetened with rock sugar.

Not bad for our first meal in Penang 🙂

Taiwan 2016 Itinerary

2016-01-07 12.45.26-1Yes we were in Taiwan again! Haha… This trip was the last of the 7 whirlwind trips that we had planned for last year, haha…

This was also our first time arriving at 桃園國際機場 Taoyuan International Airport where all the shops are opened. Before we even reached immigration, we were greeted by 3 Telco shops lined up side by side, so we got our 7 day unlimited data with NT150 worth of airtime, for NT500, at 中華電信 Chunghwa Telecom.

We took about 25 minutes to clear customs, but the luggage was already out by the time we were done, so we were out of the airport by 12.30pm to hunt for the bus.

We bought tickets for 國光客運 Guoguang Bus 1819 to 台北車站 Taipei Train Station (NT125 per person, buy tickets at the first counter, then queue for bus at Berth 5), but were unable to get up the bus as there were too many people in the queue. Nothing to worry about though, since there is a bus departing every 10 to 15 minutes during peak hours, and 10 to 20 minutes during off peak hours, and almost 24 hours a day 🙂

While waiting for the next bus to arrive, the staff would come by to paste the luggage sticker first, very efficient 🙂 The bus left on the dot at 12.50pm, and we were ready for our first trip in 2016! Did we mention our New Year resolution to continue to eat eat walk walk? 😛

Hoto Cafe @Taipei

2016-01-12 14.14.18I wanted to try out this cafe as there was this supposedly very yummy blueberry tart (limited to 6 per day).

When we arrived here after lunch, the tart was sold out already. 😦

Nonetheless, the cafe indicated that their cakes were all handmade, so we got ourselves a slice of 提拉米蘇 Tiramisu (NT90) to share.

2016-01-12 14.38.47It was light and not overly intense, and we rather enjoyed it with our 拿鐵 Latte (NT110) and 唐寧伯爵鮮奶茶 Earl Grey Milk Tea (NT110, additional NT10 for hot version).

The food and drinks presentation were really pretty! Coffee was pretty good (hubby said all the coffee he has tried during this trip were similarly good), but I thought that the tea was a bit too mild.

We loved the ambience here, and were most impressed that it was a single staff who was managing the entire place. Next time, I will call in advance to reserve the blueberry tart!

阿永小吃店 Ah Yong Eatery @Taipei

Since we were going to Hoto Cafe later in the day, we figured that we should check out the area near it for lunch. There was only one small eatery nearby, but we figured it should not be too bad as there were consistently customers going in and out of the place.

We tried the 肉丝炒米粉 Beehoon Stir-fried with Sliced Pork (NT70), and a plate of 炒花枝 Stir-fried Squid (NT150). The bee hoon tasted like 新竹米粉, which we like, and the celery with squid had a lovely wok hei to it. This was a simple, homely, and delicious meal 🙂

NOTCH咖啡工場 站前店 NOTCH Coffee Factory @Taipei

2016-01-12 12.16.31 A cafe spanning 4 floors, this was a generous place in terms of space and free wifi and charging points. The minimum spending is 1 drink, and some tables have minimum pax rules. You can spend the entire day here, as evidenced by plenty of people studying, working, or in discussion with their laptops.

2016-01-12 11.40.22The 拿鐵 Latte (NT80) here was not bad, and I found the hot 南法莊園 Lavender and Grape Tea (NT70) quite nice, though I thought that some syrup might have been used. The sweetness of grapes was very distinct and not too artificially sweet, and as one sips the tea, the lavender fragrance fills up the entire mouth, very nice!

Despite the crowd, it was not a noisy cafe, and it was lovely to just laze around. When we were done, we only had to leave our cups at the collection point, leaving the space free for others to use.

公館夜市 Gongguan Night Market @Taipei

2016-01-11 21.18.50Back in 2013, we were utterly lost trying to find 公館夜市 Gongguan Night Market, and ended up rather disappointed. This year, we decided to try again 🙂

The maps in the subway station still did not show where 公館夜市 was, but we just followed the instructions online, and got out of Exit 1.

We then realized that as this was more of an area with many shop fronts, it is known as 公館商圈 Gongguan Shopping District. And this time, we were at the correct starting point, and the push cart food stalls were actually spread out across 4 lanes, including that one lane which we went to previously.

景美夜市 Jingmei Night Market @Taipei

2016-01-11 23.21.54Today was our last night in Taipei *sob*, and we really wanted to cover 景美夜市 Jingmei Night Market, and 公館夜市 Gongguan Night Market, as they were just 2 stations apart.

Being a Monday night, we expected that some stalls might not be open. But that was fine with us, as there were plenty of everything else to eat.

The area at 景美 Jingmei is a 市场 market place in the day with shopping and food, and as night falls, it turns into a night market as other push cart style food stalls begin their operations. We were here from late afternoon, and manage to do a little shopping before dinner. The prices here seemed to be slightly cheaper.
