老圆環食品 @Datong District, Taipei

Nestled in the neighbourhood

Located 2 junctions away from our hotel (turn right after exiting hotel), near Hotel Queen and Chang An West Road Lane 45 is this wonderful place that Ms E had raved about that she went to for breakfast during her previous trip.

Since it is so near to our hotel, we made it a point to come here for breakfast too. And boy were we glad that we came!

In fact, we were so impressed with the food that we came back again the next day to try other stuff in the menu!

天天利美食坊 @Ximending, Taipei

2015-07-30 21.54.07

We had read about a rather famous 滷肉飯 braised pork belly with rice in this area, so we decided to just pop by after our trip to the night markets at Longshan Temple area.

台北夜市 2015 Taipei Night Market Part 1

The start of Guangzhou St Night Market

The start of Guangzhou St Night Market

After lunch, we went back to the Pintoo shop and got what we came to Taipei for: loads and loads of puzzles! We bought so much we had to pack them into a carton box to carry it! And it had to rain just when we were about to walk back to our hotel! Totally unexpected because we read that Taipei would be hot summer the whole while! In any case, we walked back to the hotel in a small umbrella and a huge carton box of puzzles. 🙂

After checking in to our hotel and a short rest, it was time to hit the Night Market!

There are 4 night markets near Longshan Temple MRT 捷運龍山寺, 3 of which were kind of interlinked. So we did the Guangzhou Street 廣州街觀光夜市, followed by Wuzhou Street 梧洲街夜市, and Huaxi Alley 華西街觀光夜市, before walking over to Xichang Street 西昌街夜市.

開封包公府的私房麵 @Datong District, Taipei

2015-07-30 13.42.28So we managed to locate the Pintoo puzzle shop that sells the type of jigsaw puzzle that we like, but the stock would only arrive in the afternoon. Feeling famished, we took to the small streets to look for small eats to fill our stomach.

四海豆浆大王 @Datong District, Taipei

Morning spread

Morning spread

So its more than a month since our last overseas trip, and more than 2 years since our last trip to Taiwan!

Simple menu

Simple menu

After dumping our luggage at our hotel, we were in need of nice breakfast. Near our hotel was a popular breakfast place, 四海豆浆大王, (Four Seas Soy Milk King), that was recommended by our hotel.  The menu was in Chinese, and we shared:

  • 鹹豆漿 Salted Soy Milk (NT$25): Looking like some kind of watery stew, there were little bits of coagulated soy milk. It did not look too appetising, but it was delicious! The mixture of soy milk, 冬菜 (a type of preserved vegetable), dried shrimps, and pieces of 油條 (fried dough fritters) was simple but delightful.
  • 燒餅夾蔥蛋 Flat-bread with Spring Onion Egg (NT$25): Freshly made, the hot prata-lookalike flaky flat-bread pastry had a nice chewy texture and hubby enjoyed it very much!
  • 肉包 Steamed Pork Bun (NT$18): While the bun fillings were quite little, it was very flavourful, and the skin was delicious, unlike some of the buns that we have locally with skin peeling off all over the place.

What a great way to start our trip!

Hong Kong 2015 Itinerary

Happy couple

Happy couple

So in a (very) short span of 2 days, we managed to book ourselves on budget flights out of Singapore to various locations for the second half of 2015!

First up, we were Scooting to Hong Kong at 1:55am in June 2015, thanks to the rather good offer of $125/pax for a return trip:)

Being a work day, we were still doing last minute packing on the actual day and ended up at Changi Airport Terminal 2 for a late dinner. We ended up at Crystal Jade as I wanted some hot porridge to sooth my rather empty stomach, but unfortunately, the fish belly porridge at this outlet was not really fantastic.

We had plenty of time before boarding, and ended up at the entertainment zone, strolling in the sunflower garden, and catching a penguin movie. There were also plenty of sofa seats for us to lounge and charge our phones 🙂 Gotta say that Changi Airport is really quite a pleasant place to be at!

點好味點心燒味專門店 @Tung Chung, Hong Kong

Dinner spread

Dinner spread

We made our way to Tung Chung 東涌 to do some last minute shopping, and also to stay here for the night, so as to catch our early morning 7am flight the next day. It was dinner time by the time we were done shopping, and so out we went looking for food!

The dinner buffet at the hotel did not really appeal to us, so we went over to the food court in the outlet mall, and  點好味點心燒味專門店 Hao Chi Cantonese Dim Sum looked like an affordable option!

We ordered a Roasted Goose BBQ platter (HKD 168+10% service charge) and a Boiled Seasonal Vegetables (HKD 20). We thought that the chicken and char siew was quite good, but of course, the goose paled in comparison 😛 The vegetables was standard fare.

Not too bad as a last meal for the trip, given that there were not really that many options, and we look forward to our next trip 🙂

Fish Ball and Pig's Blood

Fish Ball and Pig’s Blood

For our last few trips to Hong Kong, we would always come here for some street foods, and this time it was no exception too 🙂

Located just by the exit of the very long overhead bridge, there was always a crowd in front the this shop. We had a large bowl of 猪红 Pig’s Blood (HKD 20) and a small bowl of 鱼蛋 Fish Ball in Curry Sauce (HKD 10). There were a lot of fish balls, which hubby enjoyed very much. And of course, I totally enjoyed the smooth cubes of pig’s blood! My friends call me a vampire :X

But actually, when mummy first fed me this when I was young, I did not know that it was actually blood… It looked like dark bean curd. So many years down the road, when I finally realised what it was really made of, ah… It was kind of too late to stop 😛

18 Grams @Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

We kept passing by this cafe whenever we exit the MTR at Sheung Wan. Today was the last time we would be travelling by this station, so we figured that this would be our final stop before leaving Hong Kong island!

18 Grams is a chain of specialty coffee that has branches in various parts of Hong Kong. They brew coffee using Pour Over, Syphon, Aeropress, Cold Brew, Clever Cup, Chemex and french press, as well as the usual Expresso coffees.

I wanted a Matcha Latte (HKD 45), while hubby decided to try an original Shakerato (HKD 45). Ah! What a wonderful balance between the sweetness of the milk, and the bitterness of the matcha… Loved it! 🙂 The cold Shakerato looked innocently pretty but was very intense! Woah! I totally woke up with a tiny sip 😮

Café Deadend @Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

Stick to latte

Stick to latte

We were walking up and down the many slopes in Sheung Wan looking for this special dead end – an intimate café that could sit about 20 people indoors, with 4 more tables for outdoor seating.

Hubby had a Cafe Latte (HKD 40), while I decided on a Homemade Ginger Lemon (HKD 45). Hubby described the taste of the ginger lemon to be “the same as 白花蛇草水”, which is an almost tasteless Chinese herbal cooling drink, haha! I stirred very hard, and finally got a slightly gingerish, but very spicy and non-sweetened soda.

The cafe latte fared way better, and was much better than the one we had last night; more aromatic, stronger, less acidic, with a slight bitter and acidic aftertaste.

Conclusion? Stick to the coffee 🙂
