Restoran Nancy’s Kitchen @Melaka, Malaysia

IMG_1071Restoran Nancy’s Kitchen had been on our radar since our maiden trip to Malacca, but we had never quite made it there for all our previous trips. 😦

Despite reading mixed reviews about this place recently, we thought that we would still want to give it a try, and it was relatively closer to our next stop 🙂

We arrived at 5pm, and the place was rather quiet, though it was quite crowded by the time we finished our meal. And for the first time, we used Grab to travel around Melaka, haha! Continue reading

Locahouz @Melaka, Malaysia

This cafe served a list of interesting specialty coffee, but when we enquired further, all except one had some form of syrup used. So we opted for a Homemade Orange Lemon Beer (RM12.50 + 5% Service Charge) and two Chrysanthemum Lattes (RM13+ for hot; RM15+ for cold). We also got ourselves some Homemade Coffee Marinated Pork Belly with Pumpkin Bao (RM20.90+), Hot Sauce Pork Belly with Pumpkin Bao (RM20.50+), and Banana Cheese Cake (RM9.90+) to share.

The Baos (or burgers) were yummy, though the hot sauce version was a tad too spicy for hubby and I. The cheese cake was not overly sweet and it was a lovely finish to the meal. Drinks-wise, the lattes were pretty good, and while the alcoholic content for the beer was rather low, for a non-drinker, I certainly felt a bit high drinking it, haha! I really enjoyed the tangy sweet and bitter drink, and it was an interesting alternative to the other non coffee options 🙂

元延原创永平正宗西刀鱼圓 Yuan Yean Fishball Eating House @Yong Peng, Malaysia

We drove passed a few shops selling fishball during our stopover at Yong Peng 永平, and could not resist trying this Foochow 福州 delight.

Making another pit stop before driving to Malacca, we decided to check out one of the fishball places, since small fishballs seemed quite popular at Yong Peng. The bowl of Fishball Soup 鱼圆汤 (RM4.80 + 6% Service Tax for 6 pieces) were pretty decent, but we could not differentiate if the Fuzhou Fishballs 福州鱼圆 (RM5+ for 5 pieces) were hand-made or factory-made 😛 The Fried Fuzuk 炸腐竹 (RM6+ for 5 pieces) was just oh-so-salty….

The Soursop Juice (RM3.50+) and Passionfruit Juice (RM3.50+) were definitely refreshing and much needed on such a hot day though 🙂

永兴福州饼面厂 Eng Hin Kedai Membuat Kuih-Muih @Yong Peng, Malaysia

IMG_1046We thought to try a different pit stop while en-route to Malacca, and Yong Peng 永平 seemed like a good place for a quick rest. Also, we were intrigued by 永兴福州饼面厂 Eng Hin Kedai Membuat Kuih-Muih that was famous for hand-made noodles and Fuzhou biscuits 福州饼, also known as Kompyang.

While we decided against getting the fresh noodles that could only last 3 to 4 days, we bought some pre-packed ones which turned out yummylicious! Though the packaging said it was 福州麺線, it could be a generic packaging since we didn’t quite recognise it as the usual rice vermicelli.

We also hung around to wait for the different flavours of kompyang to be ready. We tried the salty version, the peanut version, and the oat ones with and without peanut fillings (prices ranged from RM0.80 to RM0.90). Hubby enjoyed the salty version the most 🙂

榕树下粿条仔 Restoran Rong Shu Xia @Johor Bahru, Malaysia

This was our first stop for the day after clearing customs 🙂 Originally a stall inside a coffee shop, this place has since then expanded to own a full shop front next door. We randomly ordered a few items such as 大肠头,大肠,卤蛋,猪血,三层肉,瘦肉,as well as two bowls of kway tiao 粿条。

The herbal broth was quite light, making the silky kway tiao an easy slurp. The pig’s blood was more like beancurd with a strong herbal taste. The intestines were very clean and even Ms. K was willing to try some!

And what really impressed us was the freshly deep fried shallots, which made everything so much more addictive! 油葱炸得好香!

China Trip 2019

IMG_0461We woke up bright and early at 5am, and GoJek-ed to the airport, reaching way ahead of time to check out the Harry Potter set-up at Terminal 3, and to have breakfast. This time, we tried The Green Market at Terminal 2. Food was pretty decent! There was a Harry Potter exhibition at the airport, so we had fun taking some selfies before the flight 😛

Our flight was on time and some 300 minutes later, we arrived 😀

It took us about an hour to clear immigration and queue to get out of the airport due to the security checks. It was a 10-minute brisk walk to Terminal 1, where the 长途汽车站 Coach Station is, and where we experienced the first blast of 7 degree Celcius smoky air…Thankfully the queue at the ticket counter was very short, and we managed to grab tickets for the 4pm coach to 杭州 Hangzhou (¥115 per ticket including insurance; sales stop 2 minutes before scheduled departure). Cafes in 上海 Shanghai, China

IMG_0681Shanghai has no less of its share of cafes and we managed to visit quite a few during our short stay.

We typically interspersed our cafe hopping in between meals and shopping/walking. And sometimes we just happened to see some interestingly-looking cafes and just decided to try. 🙂 Such is the luxury of vacation…

In general, the cafes in Shanghai are decent but not exceptional, compared to places like Melbourne, London or even Hong Kong. Nevertheless it was still a great experience to taste the coffee in Shanghai and enjoy the great weather, atmosphere and most importantly, the company! 🙂

桢记热气羊肉火锅 Zhenji Reqi Mutton Hotpot @上海 Shanghai, China

We wanted brunch, and were the first customers waiting outside this hotpot restaurant 😛

For ¥160, we thought the food was not bad, and the meal became nicer because there was 猪血 Pig’s Blood.. haha!

老兴隆 and 老街小食 @ 上海 Shanghai, China

These two eateries were just a few steps away from each other, and since this was our last night in Shanghai, we decided to have two dinners 😮

We tried 四喜烤麸, 油爆虾 and 熏鱼 at 老兴隆 (total ¥141), and 香肠酱油饭 (¥16) and 白灼生菜 (¥10) at 老街小食, and wow, the food at both places were very delicious!

What a perfect way to end our last night here 🙂

外滩 The Bund and 南京路步行街 Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street @ 上海 Shanghai, China

IMG_0609IMG_0690To make our 上海 Shanghai trip complete, we visited 外滩 The Bund both during the day and night over two days 🙂

The Bund is stretch of waterfront promenade along 黄浦江 Huangpu River. Overlooking the river is a stretch of modern skyscrapers, including the iconic 东方明珠塔 Oriental Pearl TV Tower. Behind it are dozens of historical buildings. We loved the contrast!

A pity it was raining when we went during the day, hence we did not stay for the sunset.

We returned the following night to enjoy the lovely night view 🙂

Just a short walk away from 外滩 The Bund, 南京路步行街 Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street is the paradise for shoppers. For us, we enjoyed the beautiful architecture 🙂
