Iceland 2014 Day 4 – Beautiful South Coast

[Here is the photostream of Iceland 2014, for those who prefer pictures to tell a story. 🙂]

We made our own waffles for breakfast!

We made our own waffles for breakfast!

Two days ago, we made reservations for Beautiful South Coast tour with Sterna Travel and indicated clearly that we needed hotel-pickup. This is one of the smaller agents and it became apparent why they remained a small one.

Our shuttle was supposed to pick us up at 8am but we waited for more than 10mins without any sign of the shuttle. We got the hotel receptionist to help us call the number on the invoice. Finally the shuttle arrived after 30mins! Apparently something went wrong with their communications, and we had to take the shuttle to chase after the actual bus!

We finally caught up at a gas station and reunited with the tour. To our surprise, there is only one driver who is also the guide (unlike Gray Line Iceland which has separate persons). The poor driver-cum-guide needed to give instructions, explain the history of the sights, answer queries, and to do all these while driving on winter icy roads!

Woke up a little earlier to have breakfast because today we were going for the Golden Circle full day tour with Gray Line Iceland!

Actually there were 2 Gray Line Golden Circle tours available, with one starting at 7.30am, and the other at 9am. Needless to say, we took the later package 😛

Iceland 2014 Day 2 – Reykjavík

Today was a nua-ing day for us, having spent the previous night in the cold trying to chase the northern light without much success.

We had a late but wonderful breakfast at the hotel and after booking bus tours with Gray Line Iceland for northern lights tonight and the Golden Circle for tomorrow, it was almost 11.30am by the time we left the hotel.

The hotel was an easy 30mins (even though websites say 15mins) bus ride away from city centre (ISK 350 ~ S$3.60/pax), and we arrived at the Reykjavik city centre close to 12 noon.

Iceland 2014 Day 1 – Mosfellsbær, Northern Lights

Hello Iceland!

Hello Iceland!

[Here is the photostream of Iceland 2014, for those who prefer pictures to tell a story. 🙂]

For once, a trip that food was not the main focus 😛

We took a very early easyJet flight out of London Luton Airport and arrived in Keflavík International Airport around 10am in the morning and it was cold!!! Hubby managed to find the Gray Line Iceland ticket office real quickly while I went to grab brochures, and we caught the bus that was leaving in 5 minutes time. The minute we stepped out of the airport, fresh cold air with a slightly sulphuric smell hit us!

Gray Line Iceland was very efficient and the big bus dropped everyone off at a central point, where everyone was re-directed to the different mini buses to be transferred to our respective hotels.

London 2014 Part 1

Wifey had to go for a work trip to London (and Birmingham and Gloucester) for first 2 weeks in Oct and the plan was for me to join her at the tail-end of her trip and to extend her vacation in London and Iceland for another 2 weeks!

Her work would end on 17 Oct (Friday) in Gloucester and she and her colleagues would travel back to London on 18 Oct where I would meet her. My plan (after factoring cost of SQ ticket, timing of flight, my work, etc., etc.) was to travel out of Singapore on 16 Oct night, and arrive on 17 Oct morning (after a 13-hr flight!) which would leave me with a full day in London before meeting her.

We would then stay in London until 22 Oct (tonight) and fly to Iceland early morning of 23 Oct and stayed until 27 Oct to fly back to London.

TILES Restaurant and Wine Bar @Victoria

Bright red storefront

Tomorrow we would be flying off to Iceland so we needed to drop off one luggage at The Rubens At The Palace today (so that we only bring one luggage with us to Iceland). Side note: The Rubens were great to allow us to store our luggage for 4 days!

We had just dropped off our luggage at The Rubens and were searching for a light lunch, as we had a large sausage roll from The Pasty Shop just before we boarded the tube. Found Tiles Restaurant and Wine Bar just diagonally across and serving fish and chips, so we popped right in!

Hot Chocolate

Woohoo! Found this cafe as we were on our way back to Oxford Street, and we were glad that we came in!

The Cafe Latte (£2.60) was very good! The acidity taste seemed to swirl around within the mouth when I took a sip, very lovely!

The Hot Chocolate (£2.60) was really chocolatey and delicious too, so it was very good for such a windy day 🙂

Burger & Lobster @36 Dean Street

Simple pleasures

Simple pleasures

We had a late start this morning and decided we must go to Burger & Lobster for lunch!

Well, you see, everyone who has gone to London (and back) says this is a must-go restaurant whenever you are in London (together with Duck & Waffle and Patty & Bun)! The food menu is very simple, there are only 3 items. In fact, there isn’t a menu! The waitress simply come by your table and explain the very simple 3 items to the table. For £20, you could order:

  • a Whole Lobster (steamed or grilled),
  • a Lobster Roll, or
  • a Beef Burger

Ah, £20 for a burger? No thanks 😛

Cambridge Day Trip

On our way!

On our way!

Off to Hogwarts!

Off to Hogwarts!

It was a lovely day to venture out to Cambridge, and we had pre-booked our off-peak return train tickets (£16) and discounted punting tickets (25% upfront) online the previous night, so we were all ready to go!

It was quite easy to print out the tickets from the vending machine at London King’s Cross station, and we had time to visit the famous Platform 9¾ to take some pictures! Of course we chose to be Gryffindors!

Patty & Bun @54 James Street

Deciding what to eat

Deciding what to eat

We were around the corner at Oxford Street and figured that we should pop by for some burger goodness!

Patty & Bun has become very popular in London with their juicy burgers. There are 2 locations in Central London, one on James Street and one on Liverpool Street. The one on James Street is right in the middle of the famous shopping street, Oxford Street (this is like Orchard Road in Singapore). Which is just as well, because you can always drop by for a burger after your shopping spree!
