18 Grams @Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

We kept passing by this cafe whenever we exit the MTR at Sheung Wan. Today was the last time we would be travelling by this station, so we figured that this would be our final stop before leaving Hong Kong island!

18 Grams is a chain of specialty coffee that has branches in various parts of Hong Kong. They brew coffee using Pour Over, Syphon, Aeropress, Cold Brew, Clever Cup, Chemex and french press, as well as the usual Expresso coffees.

I wanted a Matcha Latte (HKD 45), while hubby decided to try an original Shakerato (HKD 45). Ah! What a wonderful balance between the sweetness of the milk, and the bitterness of the matcha… Loved it! 🙂 The cold Shakerato looked innocently pretty but was very intense! Woah! I totally woke up with a tiny sip 😮

Café Deadend @Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

Stick to latte

Stick to latte

We were walking up and down the many slopes in Sheung Wan looking for this special dead end – an intimate café that could sit about 20 people indoors, with 4 more tables for outdoor seating.

Hubby had a Cafe Latte (HKD 40), while I decided on a Homemade Ginger Lemon (HKD 45). Hubby described the taste of the ginger lemon to be “the same as 白花蛇草水”, which is an almost tasteless Chinese herbal cooling drink, haha! I stirred very hard, and finally got a slightly gingerish, but very spicy and non-sweetened soda.

The cafe latte fared way better, and was much better than the one we had last night; more aromatic, stronger, less acidic, with a slight bitter and acidic aftertaste.

Conclusion? Stick to the coffee 🙂

聚點坊 Dim Sum Square @Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

Located literally less than a minute away from our hotel, at 8:45am on a Sunday morning, this place was practically empty! We decided to pace ourselves and try a few items:

  • 四寶滑雞扎 Chicken & Chinese Mushroom in Beancurd Wrapping (HKD 23): Flower mushroom, chicken and fish maw wrapped with bean curd skin, much better compared to Lin Heung!
  • 鮑菇棉花雞 Abalone Mushroom, Fish Tripe and Chicken (HKD 26): a bit duplicated as the above, abalone mushroom, chicken and fish maw separated, slightly on the saltier side.
  • 南翔小籠包 Shanghai Steamed Dumpling (HKD 24): lots of soup, slightly on the salty side. Skin not too thick.
  • 聚點坊鲜蝦餃 Shrimp Crystal Dumpling (HKD 26): oooh! Chewy skin that is not too thick, fresh prawns, nice!
  • 春風得意腸 Rice Rolls with Spring Rolls (HKD 22): The rice rolls were very smooth and soft, and the spring roll inside super crispy! With the fillings inside, this was even better than those youtiao cheong fun 炸兩!

Tea is HKD 3 per person, replenished very frequently. No additional service charge.

This place is definitely a more tourist-friendly dim sum place, with the menu on each table with both Chinese and English descriptions and pictures so that you know what you are ordering! The pace is also more relaxed, and the seats relatively spacious. A great way to start our day! 🙂

Café Corridor @Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

Very sad latte art

Very sad latte art

Our last stop today was to visit Café Corridor!

We were not too hopeful initially, as it was a rather small place, and during our previous visit, it was packed to the brim! Today, we got lucky, and at around 9:30pm, it was less than half full!

Hubby ordered a Flat White (HKD 38), while I settled for a fresh Grapefruit Juice (HKD 45). Note that coffee is only served hot here, and there is a minimum of one drink per person.

The waitress who brought us the drinks accidentally spilled a little of the coffee, making the already sad-looking latte art look even more sad… The coffee was just alright, and not really aromatic. I could taste the freshness of my grapefruit juice though! Happy that they didn’t add additional sugar syrup 🙂

羅麥記 Law Mark Kee @Hysan Place, Hong Kong

Q-No 100

Q-No 100

Since we had an ultra disappointing dinner, we decided to check out the other restaurants and discover this super long queue at 羅麥記 Law Mark Kee. Got queue means cannot be that bad right? So we got ourselves a queue number and begun our 30 minute wait for a seat.

羅麥記 Law Mark Kee is an upscale Cha Chan Teng 茶餐廳 and has quite a few outlets at various shopping malls, and the specialty is… 怀旧 retro… Haha… The walls are decorated with old school posters, and there are plenty of old school TVs, radios, standing fans, telephones, soft drink carts, sofas lying around the corners of the restaurant to bring you back to the 70s and 80s.

And then we saw a few people with Groupon deals, so we were hoping that this was not the only reason for the crowd 😮

Wanton Mee and Dumpling Soup

Wanton Mee and Dumpling Soup

This one Michelin Star wanton restaurant 雲吞麺 has been on our list for a while, but we never quite made it here during our last couple of trips. This time, we made it here for dinner!

At 6pm on a Saturday evening, it was quite crowded but still had some empty seats, and we were seated immediately 🙂

The environment was rather posh, and so the prices were rather upscale as well, with some abalone porridge going for HKD 300+! The dim sum prices were not too cheap either. Hence, we decided to stick to the basics and ordered a large Wanton Soup with Noodles (HKD 56+) and Shrimp Dumpling Soup (HKD 58+). Tea was HKD 3+ per person, with additional 10% service charge imposed.

Our food came quickly, and we were a bit surprised at the size of the bowl… Rather tiny? Gotta say that the wantons were quite flavourful and delicious, but the shrimp dumplings were quite bland, despite all the extra ingredients 😦 The soup was not bad, just a tad too pepperish. The noodles were very disappointing, as it was not at all springy, and it fact, quite tough to bite. The only redeeming point was that the thin noodles did not grow fat after soaking in the soup for a long time.

We could not believe that this was so-called Michelin Star standard!

Anyway, posh did not mean good service as well. The girls at the table next to us found worm when they were close to finishing their plate of vegetables, and when they complained to a waitress, she was like.. “So? Change another plate for you?” We also overheard the manager saying that since they almost finished the food, they had to pay for it. But the girls also did not appear to be those that would pay without a fight, and they were saying that no way they would pay for it! Not too sure who won the battle in the end, but we didn’t hear any quarrels from the payment counter. This was also not a place to linger, for our bowls were cleared very quickly after we were done, giving us a very clear and not-so-subtle hint to leave this place.

For this price, we are definitely not coming back again!

靠得住粥面小館 Trusty Congee King @Tai Ho Street, Hong Kong

Looks trustworthy?

Looks trustworthy?

We were on our way to Hong Kong National Film Archives as our last stop for today’s Heritage Trail, and made a quick stop for a late lunch.

There were 2 restaurants with attractive neon signboards here, 太興 Tai Hing Roast (apparently a chain of roast meat restaurants), with roasted meat as specialty, and 靠得住 Trusty Congee King, with congee as specialty, with a seasonal special of rice dumpling.

Thinking that it would be hard to beat the roasted goose that we had yesterday, plus the picture of the rice dumpling looked so good, and since the English translation of 靠得住 is TRUSTWORTHY, we decided that 靠得住 it shall be!

[Incidentally, we realized while writing this post, that 靠得住 Trusty Congee King is actually a brand under 太興 Tai Hing 🙂 That probably explains why they are just side-by-side.)

筲箕灣 Shau Kei Wan @Hong Kong

Happy couple

Happy couple

During our previous trip to Hong Kong, we enjoyed the Ping Shan Heritage Trail 元朗屏山文物徑 very much. This time, we decided to check out 筲箕灣 Shau Kei Wan, which was a fishing village in the olden times, and now, a place quite popular for food. We roughly followed the guide by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, that would bring us to various places of worship (link below).

But first, we needed breakfast! We took the MTR to Shau Kei Wan Station 筲箕灣站. From Exit A2, we walked along Aldrich Street 愛秩序街, and turn left into Kam Wa Street 金華街 to the Shau Kei Wan Street Market 筲箕灣街市. It was a very bustling place, with many locals doing their groceries, fishmongers with their fishes jumping around… What a sight!

低調高手大街小食 @Shau Kei Wan, Hong Kong

Freshly-made!

Freshly-made!

So we read that there is this very popular egglet 雞蛋仔 stall in Shau Kei Wan 筲箕灣 where there’s perpetually long queues.

We managed to find it just as it was starting to open after some walking around, and true enough a small queue has already been formed close to 11am!

For HKD 15, we got ourselves a huge egglet 雞蛋仔. The crispy bits were really fragrant and delicious, and your teeth would sink into the chewy insides beneath the crispy exterior 🙂 However, it was not cooked evenly, so we had to throw away the uncooked parts 😦

Nevertheless, we were now ready to start our heritage trail!

華星冰室 Chrisly Cafe @Shau Kei Wan, Hong Kong

Wonderful spread

Wonderful spread

We had read about this rather popular Cha Chan Teng 茶餐廳 and decided to come here for breakfast before doing the heritage trail on our 2nd day in Hong Kong!

At 10am on a hot Saturday morning, there was a relatively long queue. Thankfully, the queue moved rather fast and we were seated within 10 minutes.

We ordered 黑松露炒蛋多士 Scrambled Eggs with Truffle on Toast (HKD 40),特色猪扒包 Devil’s Pork Chop Bun (HKD 20), Coffee and Milk Tea. The scrambled eggs were really very excellent! Moist and buttery, it was an oh-so-heavenly breakfast option! The thick toast was soft and went well with the eggs. The pork chop bun was really a devil because of the very spicy wasabi mayonnaise 😮

Note that Chrisly Cafe is also known as Capital Cafe.
