永利清湯腩 Weng Lik Beef Brisket @ Sai Wan, Hong Kong

2016-12-08 03.29.11We are back in Hong Kong again! 😉

After dumping our luggage at the hotel, we walked towards the cluster of late night supper venues that we had read about. Our first stop was 永利清湯腩, and we had read a lot of good reviews about this place!

At 3.30am, there were still customers enjoying a bowl of soupy goodness. We decided to share a bowl of 清湯腩粉麵 Beef Brisket Noodles (HK$32), and the uncle was kind enough to provide us with an additional small bowl 🙂

The clear hot soup was light and refreshing! The meat was sweet and slightly tender, with just enough bite to it. The thin springy noodles were delicious without tasting overly alkaline. This was definitely a bowl of hearty goodness on a cold night like this!

Pluck @Ann Siang Hill

2016-11-30 20.57.05

Chope had a 1-for-1 deal, and so we ended up here for dinner 🙂

Seated at the counter, we had a great view of the chefs in action. We wanted to try so many things, but our waistlines had been expanding… *ouch*

Anyway, we still ate a lot, haha 😛

  • Tuna Tartare ($20++): This was rather addictive, with well balanced flavours and very fresh tuna. The papadum was very crispy and went well with the tuna.
  • Soft Shell Crab ($20++): We liked the crunchy batter, but the saltiness overpowered the Thai green curry flavour.
  • Assam pork ribs ($22++): The pork ribs were very tender and delicious!
  • Tom yum cereal salmon ($22++): Our favourite item, the salmon was oven-baked to perfection, almost melting in our mouths. Gosh.. salivating just thinking about it 😀
  • 10° vermicelli ($2++): This was quite refreshing, not bad at all.

Word Cafe @Springleaf

2016-11-20 12.31.18We have been reading quite good reviews about Word Cafe, a Muslim-owned cafe, and especially it’s rainbow bagel, so we decided to check it out while strolling from our last makan place.

It was quite easy to miss this place because of the on-going Thomson-East Coast Line MRT Springleaf Station site construction.

The exterior looked like a red container building, and the interior was decorated with wooden boxes, paintings of crates, and the tables had pipes for legs. We liked the industrial vibe here!

Verdure Cafe @Springleaf

2016-11-20-10-16-05It was Sunday and we felt like having brunch closer to nature. Decided to check out Verdure which is next to Springleaf Park 🙂

There were plenty of outdoor seatings (pets allowed), but we opted for the smaller indoor space because it was so hot today!

At just before 10am, with only 2 other customers, we were disappointed to know that 2 of the 3 chef’s recommendations for weekend brunch was not available.

We decided to just share a Big Breakfast ($16.90 nett). For drinks, we ordered Latte ($4.90) and a hot Honey Apple Cider Vinegar ($4.90).

Bincho @Hua Bee

2016-11-05-14-21-26

We caught up with JY at Bincho today!

We got lost trying to figure out how to reach this place because the shop front was actually Hua Bee Restaurant, a mee pok stall (This coffee shop was the set for Eric Khoo’s 1995 movie, Mee Pok Man.), heh *confused*

We actually passed by this place when we went for Tiong Bahru Heritage Trail but didn’t went in to try.

It was fairly quiet during lunch time on a Saturday, and I decided on the Wagyu Roast Beef Don set, while hubby could not resist ordering Whole Chicken Leg and Cheese Curry Katsu set. Each set comes with appetizers, salad, pickles, karaage, soup and dessert.

How should we describe this?

We liked every single item and wiped everything clean! The meats were cooked to perfection, and there was always something magical about egg yolk mixing with beef slices and rice…. YUMS! There was a choice of mochi or sesame ice cream for dessert, which worked well for me, haha 😛

Taipei Nov 2016 Itinerary

2016-10-31-08-30-54This was our second trip to 台北 Taipei this year!

There was a SQ promotion going on and we got our tickets at S$518 per pax for this trip. As we were bringing my parents, and it was dad’s first trip to Taiwan, we figured that a slow-paced itinerary in Taipei would be quite ideal.

We decided to stay in 西門町 Ximending area this time, instead of 台北車站Taipei Main Station, because

  • We would not be travelling out of 台北 Taipei this time.
  • We would be making frequent trips back to hotel to rest, and there were plenty to eat and shop in 西門町 Ximending area till late so there would always be stuff to do near the hotel.
  • We also found 丰居旅店  西門館 Via Hotel Ximen, which provided all-day snacks and drinks at level 2, so we could literally just stay in the hotel all day if we were really too tired to go anywhere. We tended to snack a bit in the hotel first before going out. We ended up spending quite a fair bit of time at this common seating area, since we sometimes dabao-ed food back to eat with our parents. (See review at Tripadvisor)
  • 西門町 Ximending is quite a convenient and centralised area to stay with Green and Blue MRT lines (Lines 3 and 5 捷運西門站 Ximen Station), making it easy for travelling within Taipei.
  • We had never actually explore 西門町 Ximending much in all our previous trips, perhaps except during our very first trip to Taiwan back in 2009. So we would have something new to try out as well.

台北夜市 2016 Taipei Night Market

We revisited some of the night markets that we had been to previously, so here are some updates on the places. For reviews of our past night market trips, please see here.

南機場夜市 Nanjichang Night Market

20161030_165708_hdrBeing one of the closest night markets to Ximending area, and a more local style night market (as opposed to the touristy ones) with decent seating, we opted to bring my parents here first. There might not be many stalls, but there were a pretty decent variety of food options.

It was a short cab ride away (around NT$85 one way), and the first shop we went to was  呷臭彈蒸臭豆腐, for dad to try out some steamed stinky tofu.

We got ourselves a 小辣現蒸臭豆腐 Freshly-steamed Smelly Tofu (NT$70), a small 麻香麵 Dry Noodles with Sesame (NT$40), as well as a 桂花烏梅汁 Osmanthus Plum Juice (NT$20) to share.

Actually, we wanted to bring them to the more famous 臭老闆現蒸臭豆腐 that we went to during our previous trip, but I got confused about the 2 shops… Oops! Luckily, this one was not too bad.

我親愛的, 咖啡廳 OA, My Dear Cafe @Taipei

2016-11-02-17-14-10We were just roaming around the area and wanted to take a break. 我親愛的, 咖啡廳 OA, My Dear Cafe had pretty good online reviews and so we decided to check it out 🙂

We really liked the cosy environment, and spent quite a bit of time nursing our Iced My Dear 特調冰咖啡 Italian Coffee (NT$150) and 威士忌紅茶 Whiskey Black Tea (NT$140).

Despite the assurance that there was very little alcohol content, I could really taste the whiskey, haha! It was quite interesting, but I got a little giddy towards the end (I’m definitely a non-drinker!).

The iced coffee was not bad, but it was sweet, which hubby did not expect, because we had incorrectly assumed that sugar/syrup would be served separately by the side.

蜂大咖啡 Fong Da Coffee @Taipei

2016-11-01-18-57-23Established since 1956, this was one of the first coffee places in Taipei and was very popular.

In fact, the queue was so long when we walked past the first time and we ended up at 南美咖啡 Nanmay Coffee next door instead.

Hence, we decided to come try our luck again. When we arrived around 6.30pm, the place was quite quiet, and one of the staff was roasting the coffee beans using a rather antique-looking machine, and it was oh-so-fragrant!

With close to 30 coffee options, we opted for 蜂大水滴冰咖啡 Fong Da Iced Coffee (NT$85) and hot 法式巧克力 French Chocolate (NT$100). We also saw many traditional pastries (NT$12 each) and could not help but order the 花生糕 Peanut Cake and 绿豆糕 Mung Bean Cake.
