Strangers’ Reunion @Duxton

Cafe Latte, as usual

Cafe Latte, as usual

Wifey was in town for meeting so we decided to look around SGH for dinner!

Met up with her at SGH and walked out towards Neil Road. Whip out my iPhone and Strangers’ Reunion jumped right out of FourSquare. This is a cafe which was opened quite a while ago when the cafe crave started in Singapore. Have seen many pictures, especially of their buttermilk waffles, all over Instagram but have yet to try. Since this was a quiet night, we could find seats and so we decided to have our dinner here!

The deco was quite a simple, industrial look, with exposed pipes and trunking. Quite a number of tables and seats around, and if you are only here for waffles, they have opened another outlet called Waffle Slayer just next door!

London 2014 Part 2

Time past so fast, and we were now at the tail-end of our vacation!

You would have read about our London Part 1, and our 5 days in Iceland. After coming back from Iceland, we just wanted to take it slow and did not plan a lot of activities. The previous posts were some of the places we visited and ate.

Hampstead Heath @London

Serenity lake

Serenity lake

Wifey and her friend, Ms M, had wanted to do a forest walk when they were in London, and they had initially planned on visiting a distant forest. But after sharing their plans with their boss, he suggested Hampstead Heath instead, which is more do-able and is nearer to London.

Hampstead Heath (locally known as “the Heath”) is a large, ancient London park, covering 320 hectares. This grassy public space sits astride a sandy ridge, one of the highest points in London, running from Hampstead to Highgate. The Heath is rambling and hilly, embracing ponds, recent and ancient woodlands, a lido, playgrounds, and a training track, and it adjoins the stately home of Kenwood House and its grounds. The south-east part of the Heath is Parliament Hill, from which the view over London is protected by law.

Great Queen Street Restaurant @32 Great Queen Street

War Horse play at New London Theatre

War Horse play at New London Theatre

After visiting British Museum, we wanted to spend the evening catching another musical or play. We tried for Matilda but it was full-house, so we settled on the hugely popular War Horse at New London Theatre.

After getting the tickets, there was still enough time for dinner so we wandered around the streets nearby and found this Great Queen Street restaurant which serves modern British food!

There are quite some tables on the ground level and there is also an alfresco area, with a cellar bar that opens till midnight (possibly for post-theatre drinks). There is a pre-theatre menu that serves quite a decent list of food, catering to the patrons of quite a good number of theatres around this area.

Some dishes on the menu were good for sharing for 2 or 3, but we didn’t had enough time, even though the description on the chalkboard looked awesomely tempting!

London 2014 Part 1

Wifey had to go for a work trip to London (and Birmingham and Gloucester) for first 2 weeks in Oct and the plan was for me to join her at the tail-end of her trip and to extend her vacation in London and Iceland for another 2 weeks!

Her work would end on 17 Oct (Friday) in Gloucester and she and her colleagues would travel back to London on 18 Oct where I would meet her. My plan (after factoring cost of SQ ticket, timing of flight, my work, etc., etc.) was to travel out of Singapore on 16 Oct night, and arrive on 17 Oct morning (after a 13-hr flight!) which would leave me with a full day in London before meeting her.

We would then stay in London until 22 Oct (tonight) and fly to Iceland early morning of 23 Oct and stayed until 27 Oct to fly back to London.

Windsor Castle @London

The Queen is in!!

The Queen is in!!

I woke up early this morning because I was going to visit Windsor Castle today!

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. It has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost 1,000 years. It is an official residence of Her Majesty The Queen, whose standard flies from the Round Tower when she is in residence. (And as you can see from the picture on the left, The Queen was in the day I visited Windsor Castle! But she didn’t come by and say ‘Hi!’ though… Haha…)

Windsor is still very much a working royal palace. The Castle is used regularly for ceremonial and State occasions. It is here that The Queen often hosts State Visits from overseas monarchs and presidents. There are various sights to visit at Windsor Castle, including The State Apartments, Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, St George’s Chapel, The Drawing Gallery, The Semi-State Rooms, and the Changing of Guards. [closed] Hang Out Cafe @AMK

Note: Hang Out Cafe has ceased operations at this location, and relocated to NAFA.

Bombastic Egg

Bombastic Egg

You may have heard that the Burpz Cafe that used to be near our house has changed management and renamed themselves to Hang Out Cafe. They have been quite on the ball and changing/adding menu items regularly. So on this quiet night when I do not know where or what to have dinner, I just strolled myself to here and decided to park here and nua…

I saw the board displaying the Savoury Waffle and wanted to try but it was only available at breakfast and tea time. However the owner was quite flexible and said that the kitchen would be able to prepare for me, if I wanted to try it. So I ordered that (not knowing exactly what is the savoury part) and ordered the Bombastic Egg ($8) as well.

Fosters @Holland Village

Devonshire Cream Tea Set

Devonshire Cream Tea Set

Wifey was in London for a work trip so I was all alone in search of food in Holland Village. Since the time was just right for afternoon tea, I decided to visit Fosters, an Engligh Rose Cafe (which is also a steak restaurant for lunch and dinner) again for its very affordable Devonshire Cream Tea Set ($11.50)!

The set comes with a pair of freshly-baked scones served with butter, home-made strawberry preserve and cream, fruit cake, finger sandwiches and a choice of a pot of coffee or tea, which of course I opted for Cafe Latte instead.

The scones on itself were already heavenly and its taste was leveled up with the clotted cream! Baked freshly everyday at 3pm, the scones were crispy on the outside and soft and light on the inside which did not give a very heavy feeling, especially when there were two to go with.

Definitely recommended if you are in the vicinity, and at the right time!

Little Pancakes @Upper Thomson

Keep Calm and Eat Pancakes

Keep Calm and Eat Pancakes

We have been here for a couple of times already but didn’t blog about it. Since I am running out of ideas to eat alone in Upper Thomson (wifey is in London for a work trip), I thought of re-visiting! And also because I was somehow craving for pancakes. 🙂

The place is very simple and it serves just pancakes. There are a couple of savoury pancakes and a whole list of sweet ones.

The unique thing about the pancakes here is that they come in small, mini-sized ones instead of the usual big ones (hence the name Little Pancakes). This makes it easy to eat, and gives the illusion that there are more (in number)!

Mu Parlour @Holland Village

Happy couple!

Happy couple!

"Life is short, eat dessert first."

“Life is short, eat dessert first.”

After our relaxing massage in Holland Village, it’s time for dinner!

Searched on 4SQ and found this place called Mu Parlour. Wondering what it was, we walked up and down Holland Village but was not able to find it. So we went to CRAFT Bakery to finally try The Craft.

After The Craft and a risotto, we were somewhat still not fully satisfied. We were determined to find Mu Parlour!

So we walked around and around again. Then when we were about to give up near Coffee Bean, and when we looked up, we realised there’s a 2nd Floor just on top of Coffee Bean. And a vertical banner just outside the stairs said “Mu Parlour“! 🙂
