Food

Food Gallery @Penang Times Square, Penang

We were at the very same food court again!

This time, we were here to avoid the rain, and it was getting late, so we figured that we should grab a bite. The problem with food court was that it sells plenty of non local food, so we ended up with the local stall selling Char Kway Tiao (RM6.90).

They used normal chicken egg instead of duck egg, and though there was quite a bit of wok hei, there was also a fair bit of burnt egg and kway tiao..

Oops. Not too bad, if we skipped the burnt bits 😛

But of course this was a nice place to rest our sore feet and wait for the rain to stop. Not to mention there’s also nice air-con to cool our heated body down… 😛

Black Kettle @Lebuh Pantai, Penang

2016-04-17 11.01.32The weather in Penang is a killer!

So after our sumptuous dim sum breakfast, we went on a Street Art hunt for the awesome and beautiful street arts in George Town.

In the midst of our hunting, we needed to take refuge from the scorching sun. And we happened to past by Black Kettle so we quickly went inside to take shelter!

This modern cafe offers quite an extensive menu, from a whole section of bakery items to breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner items, as well as desserts, coffees, teas and wines for everyone!

The eggs benedict and pancakes photos on IG looks so yummylicious but we were still full from the morning spread so we only ordered:

  • Blueberry Yoghurt Cake (RM8.50++): This was heavenly! It was dense, moist and not overly sweet.
  • Caffe Latte Cold (RM11++): This was saviour to hubby as it cooled him down almost immediately.
  • Honey Lemon (RM8++): This was surprisingly good, as I could really taste the lemon in the drink when most honey lemons were quite watered down… This had a very good balance of honey and lemon, and I loved it.

Kimberley Street Night Market @Lebuh Kimberley, Penang

2016-04-16 21.34.25We checked in to our hotel on Lebuh Chulia in the late afternoon, and after a good rest in the hotel, we went to check out the night market scene at Kimberley Street.

This street (Lebuh Kimberley) is a major street food venue in George Town and there were many stalls and kopitiams or coffee gardens along both sides of the street at the junction of Lebuh Cintra and Lebuh Kimberley. This street is also just a short walk from our hotel on Lebuh Chulia (part of the reason to stay at Lebuh Chulia!).

Penang street food or hawker food are very affordable food options in Penang. Prices are usually around RM5 to RM6 (~S$2) for a plate of Lor Mee, Hokkien Prawn Mee, Char Koay Teow, Koay Teow Thng, Assam Laksa etc. I am salivating just typing out this list.

Kedai Makan Cintra Food Corner 日本街肉粽茶餐室 @Lebuh Cintra, Penang

2016-04-16 18.24.11We are back in Penang!

We had gotten off at Komtar Bus Terminal and making our way to our hotel from there.

When we were almost reaching the hotel, we spotted the rice dumpling shop that we went to back in 2011. We were now back for more!

  • Special Golden Dumpling 雙黄加料大肉粽 (RM7.90): Densely packed glutinous rice with 2 salted egg yolk goodness, there was also plenty of fatty meat… Very sinful but delicious!
  • Famous Yam Cake 驰名芋糕 (RM2.90): The aromatic yam flavour hit us before we even took a bite out of this smooth yam cake, awesome!
  • Herbal Tea 罗汉果 (RM2.50): Served cold, it was a refreshing drink that was lightly sweetened with rock sugar.

Not bad for our first meal in Penang 🙂

Seorae Korean Charcoal BBQ @Plaza Singapura

2016-04-05 21.14.41It was time to try something new! OCBC is having a 1-for-1 promotion for Galmaegisal (marinated pork skirt meat), so that kinda made us decide to try out this place.

According to the menu, galmaegisal is supposed to be “well-loved for its perfect combination of tender juiciness”, and “this unique cut that forms only 250 grams of a full-grown pig is said to be only serves to the Royal Family of Korea in the past”. We were quite sold to the idea of eating it already!

Ju Hao Xiao Long Bao 聚豪拉面小笼包 @Square 2

This area has been under renovations for a rather long time, and we were pleasantly surprised to find that Ju Hao Xiao Long Bao 聚豪拉面小笼包 (originally from the already closed Lavendar Food Square and now opened in collaboration with MOF) has finally opened on 31st March!

Ambush @Junction 8

We had patronized Ambush many times and today is one of those days when you can’t really decide what to have for dinner. 🙂

But alas, the pork knuckles was out of stock AGAIN! Of the so many times we were here, we had only managed to try it once…

  • Mixed Mussels and Clams Pot ($19.50++): The white wine sauce was so tasty and flavourful!
  • Confit of Duck ($20.50++) – Duck was a bit tough and not as tender as what we had in other restaurants.
  • Risotto with Pancetta and Foie Gras ($21.50++) – Our favourite dish of the night! The risotto was wonderfully done and eaten together with the pancetta bits and cheese was so satisfying!

Oh My Tian Bakehouse & Cafe @Boon Keng

2016-03-29 19.33.20We finally made it here, after hearing and seeing so much of it since it’s opening in Jan 2016!

Oh My Tian was opened by the same folks over at Hatter Street in Kovan, so you can expect crispy-on-the-outside-but-fluffy-on-the-inside waffles. They also have some mains and a totally delightful decor that’s so Instagram-worthy! Think a Merry-Go-Round in the corner of the cafe? A park in another corner with a street-lamp telephone? 🙂

It was a very quiet Tuesday when we came here for dinner, and we had almost the entire place to ourselves. Gotta say that they have really put in a lot for the decorations 🙂

Sushiro @Thomson Plaza

img_3785We had walked past here a few times, but never quite managed to eat here; the queue was usually very long!

Today, we had tried to call earlier to make reservations, but alas, the staff must have been too busy to pick up calls. Nonetheless, we thought of just popping by to see the queue situation.

Thankfully, the queue was relatively short (i.e. not beyond the rice dumping shop), and more importantly, we could see that some tables were finishing up. So at 12:15pm, we decided to queue for lunch 🙂

Being a 12-seater restaurant, including 4 counter seats, and 4 tables of 2 pax each, this place is definitely not a place for big groups. If you are willing to squeeze, they have an additional 7 chairs somewhere for the queue, but able to set up tables of 3s and even 4s! Everyone was rather cooperative and willing to shift a little to make space, so we now have a 16-seater restaurant. Of course, there were also some diners who chose to play with their mobile phone after their meal, hence hogging the table and earning lots of dagger stares from the queue. Not like they cared though, haha! The staff were also nice enough not to chase them away. I guess we still have lots to learn from the Hong Kong cha chan tengs.

Magic Wok Restaurant @Thomson Plaza

2016-03-21 07.15.04While our friends were enjoying themselves in Bangkok, we decided to console ourselves by having some Thai food 😛

We had walked past Magic Wok, a halal-certified restaurant, a few times before, and decided to give it a shot.

  • Sambal Kang Kong ($6.80+GST): Our favourite dish, as it was not overpowering with its fiery sambal.
  • Thai Style Fried Fish ($18.80): This was also not bad, the fried fins were crispy enough to be a crunchy treat. The sweet and spicy sauce was quite balanced too.
  • Pandan Leaf Chicken ($8.80 for 4 pieces): This was a letdown as the chicken pieces were too dry.
  • Thai Style Pineapple Rice ($5.80): There was a distinctive curry flavour to it. The prawn and chicken did not taste very fresh 😦
  • Thai Iced Tea ($2.50): This was pretty standard.

Without service charge, this is one of the more wallet-friendly options in Thomson Plaza.

Note: Plain water is available at 50 cents per cup.
