Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul @Lebuh Leng Kwee, Penang

We were here at the legendary roadside stall in 2011, and the queue remained as crazy in 2016… And the queue at the chendul stall opposite remained non-existent… Oops.

This pushcart stall started in 1936 with the old Mr Tan Teik Fuang learning to make and beginning to sell chendul at Penang Road. Business flourished and picked up when the 2nd generation Mr Tan Chong Kim took over in 1977 and started applying innovation with a business mind while keeping the quality of the product. Today Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul has branches all over Malaysia and is planning on expanding to overseas too.

As usual, we just grabbed a bowl of Chendul for RM2.70, and slurped it up by the roadside, along with the rest.

It was still as good as ever, with the generous gula melaka and aromatic coconut flavours, making it a delightful dessert. Who cares about the hot sun anyway? 😉

Tong Seng Restoran 東城茶餐廳 @Penang Road, Penang

After the not-too-satisfying char kway tiao, we spotted another char kway tiao stall as we made our way back to the hotel, and this time, they fry it with duck egg!!!

Without hesitation, we ordered our second plate of Char Kw6ay Tiao with Duck Egg (RM6) within 2 hours 😮 To add on to the variety, we also ordered a Penang Laksa (RM5), and White Nutmeg Drink (RM2.30).

This plate of char kway tiao was so worth the calories! Something about the duck egg simply made this dish super flavourful 😀 The laksa sadly was lacking the sourness of the assam and was overly spicy for us.

But we were totally satisfied with the CKT alone! 😛

Ah Teik Durian Stall @Lorong Susu, Penang

img_3986GL highly recommended trying out the local Penang durians, especially the white flesh Milk Durian (牛奶榴莲 Durian Susu). He did warn us that due to the poor weather recently, the durians might not be of such good quality though.

Since we did not try out any durians during our previous trip, we figured that we should still go check it out. So, following his recommendations, we went in search of this durian stall located at Lorong Susu.

Now was not the durian season though, so there were not much variety available. To our disappointment, the Milk Durians are usually available only from June onwards. The available durians were mostly too huge, and we only wanted to sample one.

So finally, we got ourselves a small Red Prawn Durian (红虾榴莲 Ang Heh Durian) for RM20. Seemed rather expensive!

There were about 7 to 8 seeds inside this small durian, and the vendor helped us open up as we started eating. Service was good in the sense that they provide water and gloves. We thought the durian was alright… Hubby had not eaten durians for almost 10 years, and while I’ve eaten durians say once every 2 years, I’m not a durian expert. I preferred slightly bitter versions though. The flesh of this durian was kinda sweet, and the flesh was a bit hard. The seeds were small though, so there was quite a good proportion of flesh.

Food Gallery @Penang Times Square, Penang

We were at the very same food court again!

This time, we were here to avoid the rain, and it was getting late, so we figured that we should grab a bite. The problem with food court was that it sells plenty of non local food, so we ended up with the local stall selling Char Kway Tiao (RM6.90).

They used normal chicken egg instead of duck egg, and though there was quite a bit of wok hei, there was also a fair bit of burnt egg and kway tiao..

Oops. Not too bad, if we skipped the burnt bits 😛

But of course this was a nice place to rest our sore feet and wait for the rain to stop. Not to mention there’s also nice air-con to cool our heated body down… 😛

Black Kettle @Lebuh Pantai, Penang

2016-04-17 11.01.32The weather in Penang is a killer!

So after our sumptuous dim sum breakfast, we went on a Street Art hunt for the awesome and beautiful street arts in George Town.

In the midst of our hunting, we needed to take refuge from the scorching sun. And we happened to past by Black Kettle so we quickly went inside to take shelter!

This modern cafe offers quite an extensive menu, from a whole section of bakery items to breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner items, as well as desserts, coffees, teas and wines for everyone!

The eggs benedict and pancakes photos on IG looks so yummylicious but we were still full from the morning spread so we only ordered:

  • Blueberry Yoghurt Cake (RM8.50++): This was heavenly! It was dense, moist and not overly sweet.
  • Caffe Latte Cold (RM11++): This was saviour to hubby as it cooled him down almost immediately.
  • Honey Lemon (RM8++): This was surprisingly good, as I could really taste the lemon in the drink when most honey lemons were quite watered down… This had a very good balance of honey and lemon, and I loved it.

Tai Tong Restoran 大東酒樓 @Lebuh Cintra, Penang

Another of our favourites back in 2011, we woke up extra early to come here for breakfast!

The food was nothing fancy, but we simply liked it because it was so old-school. It was crowded whenever we walked past, from morning to night.

At 7.30am on a Sunday morning, there were still some seats available, and we picked one that looked most airy.

We loved how the pushcarts would weave through the tables and each lady staff hawkering what they had. You just had to point at whatever you wish to eat, and they would make a mark on the ordering form with prices ranging from RM1.40 to RM11, though it appeared that the weekend specials were mostly RM6.50 each.

Kimberley Street Night Market @Lebuh Kimberley, Penang

2016-04-16 21.34.25We checked in to our hotel on Lebuh Chulia in the late afternoon, and after a good rest in the hotel, we went to check out the night market scene at Kimberley Street.

This street (Lebuh Kimberley) is a major street food venue in George Town and there were many stalls and kopitiams or coffee gardens along both sides of the street at the junction of Lebuh Cintra and Lebuh Kimberley. This street is also just a short walk from our hotel on Lebuh Chulia (part of the reason to stay at Lebuh Chulia!).

Penang street food or hawker food are very affordable food options in Penang. Prices are usually around RM5 to RM6 (~S$2) for a plate of Lor Mee, Hokkien Prawn Mee, Char Koay Teow, Koay Teow Thng, Assam Laksa etc. I am salivating just typing out this list.

Kedai Makan Cintra Food Corner 日本街肉粽茶餐室 @Lebuh Cintra, Penang

2016-04-16 18.24.11We are back in Penang!

We had gotten off at Komtar Bus Terminal and making our way to our hotel from there.

When we were almost reaching the hotel, we spotted the rice dumpling shop that we went to back in 2011. We were now back for more!

  • Special Golden Dumpling 雙黄加料大肉粽 (RM7.90): Densely packed glutinous rice with 2 salted egg yolk goodness, there was also plenty of fatty meat… Very sinful but delicious!
  • Famous Yam Cake 驰名芋糕 (RM2.90): The aromatic yam flavour hit us before we even took a bite out of this smooth yam cake, awesome!
  • Herbal Tea 罗汉果 (RM2.50): Served cold, it was a refreshing drink that was lightly sweetened with rock sugar.

Not bad for our first meal in Penang 🙂

Malacca 2015 Day 3

2015-10-11 10.41.00Today is check-out day. We had a simple breakfast at hotel, and went back to the Jonker area. There was a flea market and we had fun looking at stuff from the olden days.

2015-10-11 11.15.53We stopped by for coffee at Calanthe Art Cafe where coffee from 18 Malaysia states were on display, with the staff suggesting that mummy try the Perlis Kopi (RM4.25 + 6% GST), as she preferred something more milky, while hubby was so feeling so hot, so he went for cold Caffe latte (RM 9.35+). Daddy settled for green apple juice (RM7.25+), and I wanted the apple aloe vera (RM5.15+).

2015-10-11 12.57.17It was back to hotel for a quick lunch at Coffeevine in Hatten Hotel. Our KKKL coach was scheduled to leave at 2pm, but we were told to be at the pick up point by 1.30pm. It came promptly at 1:30pm and we reached the drop-off point in Singapore (near Hotel V at Lavender instead of Textile Centre) by 6.10pm. And our short vacation has ended. 🙂

Malacca 2015 Day 2

2015-10-10 10.37.102015-10-10 11.03.15We took our time in the morning and had a late breakfast at the hotel.

After that, a slow stroll brought us to St Paul’s Hill, and A’ Famosa Fort.

We continued to stroll to the famous landmark of Melaka, Christ Church Melaka before making our way back for lunch at Restoran Nyonya Makko!

We had heard good reviews of Amy Heritage Nyonya Cuisine which is just behind Hatten Hotel but we were not able to get reservations (it’s very very popular!). So we settled for Makko which is also near the hotel and we had been here 5 years ago.
