Malacca 2015 Day 3

2015-10-11 10.41.00Today is check-out day. We had a simple breakfast at hotel, and went back to the Jonker area. There was a flea market and we had fun looking at stuff from the olden days.

2015-10-11 11.15.53We stopped by for coffee at Calanthe Art Cafe where coffee from 18 Malaysia states were on display, with the staff suggesting that mummy try the Perlis Kopi (RM4.25 + 6% GST), as she preferred something more milky, while hubby was so feeling so hot, so he went for cold Caffe latte (RM 9.35+). Daddy settled for green apple juice (RM7.25+), and I wanted the apple aloe vera (RM5.15+).

2015-10-11 12.57.17It was back to hotel for a quick lunch at Coffeevine in Hatten Hotel. Our KKKL coach was scheduled to leave at 2pm, but we were told to be at the pick up point by 1.30pm. It came promptly at 1:30pm and we reached the drop-off point in Singapore (near Hotel V at Lavender instead of Textile Centre) by 6.10pm. And our short vacation has ended. 🙂

Malacca 2015 Day 2

2015-10-10 10.37.102015-10-10 11.03.15We took our time in the morning and had a late breakfast at the hotel.

After that, a slow stroll brought us to St Paul’s Hill, and A’ Famosa Fort.

We continued to stroll to the famous landmark of Melaka, Christ Church Melaka before making our way back for lunch at Restoran Nyonya Makko!

We had heard good reviews of Amy Heritage Nyonya Cuisine which is just behind Hatten Hotel but we were not able to get reservations (it’s very very popular!). So we settled for Makko which is also near the hotel and we had been here 5 years ago.

Malacca 2015 Day 1

2015-10-10 10.32.32-2We did a short getaway over the weekend to Malacca with my parents over the weekend.

Malacca has lots to offer but our last trip was more than 5 years ago. So we were quite lucky and thankful to have taken Luxury Coach because a guide was on board to share much about Malacca and its attractions when we were en route after Woodlands Checkout to Malacca. That helped to frame our expectations and refreshed some of our memories of the beautiful place.

While the speed of eating was definitely slower this time, we still managed to try a few things 😀

Staycation 2015 @Orchard Road

It was a very festive long weekend for us, and we decided to do a staycation for our celebrations 🙂

Hubby was on Far East Hospitality mailing list and they sent him a birthday deal which upgraded us to a Club Room with club privileges (at deluxe room price) and lots of freebies (like 2hrs lounge usage at Changi Airport which could come in handy for our trips later in the year!!). Being on the club level means we can enjoy the Club Lounge which serves breakfast, afternoon snacks, pre-dinner snacks and unlimited coffee and tea! We literally just sat in the lounge most of the time since the PSI was climbing like no one’s business (until MOE had to declare no-school on Friday!).

Day 1 (24 Sep): Check in at Orchard Parade Hotel, went for complimentary hop-on-and-off ride, went Everton Park (Batterworks and Just Want Coffee), lunch at Teng Bespoke Japanese Vegetarian Dining @Sunshine Plaza, tea break at Curious Platette @Prinsep Street, visit to National Museum, nua at Club Lounge in hotel, dinner at Akanoya Robatayaki.

Day 2 (25 Sep): Woke up late and had breakfast in hotel, lunch at I Want My Noodle, nua at Club Lounge in hotel, attend Wedding Dinner in Tunglok Signatures

Day 3 (26 Sep): Woke up late and had breakfast in hotel, check-out at 4pm

  • Orchard Parade Hotel: Not bad a location for staycation. And the club level provides a very nice environment to escape from the haze!

Taipei 2015 Itinerary

This was a super impromptu trip as hubby realized that his KrisFlyer miles were expiring soon and we needed to redeem! But we didn’t have enough mileage to go anywhere far, so we settled for a redemption of a one way ticket and purchasing a budget airline ticket for the other way… And so, we ended up going to Taipei!

We touched down at 桃園國際機場 Taoyuan International Airport T1 around 05:45 and made our way to T2 to get our SIM card… And we were lost again! So for the record:

  • At T1, after clearing immigration, follow sign boards to take lift to 3F to take Skytrain to T2. This will lead you to Departure Hall.
  • 中華電信 Chunghwa Telecom is a booth located in front of Row 14, next to the entrance/exit to the airport.

錦州街 Jinzhou Street @Zhongshan District, Taipei

Happy couple!

Happy couple!

We were staying at 新驛旅店復興北路店 CityInn Hotel Plus Fuxing North Road branch, and just around the corner from the hotel, half-way to the 捷運中山國中站 MRT Zhongshan Junior High School Station, is this awesome food street, and was the recommended go-to street for food!

There is a variety of food options here, ranging from small eateries of braised pork belly rice, noodle stalls. dessert stalls, Japanese restaurants, to Italian restaurants, trendy cafes, and a vegetarian buffet restaurant!

We had popped by for lunch when we shifted from our previous hotel, and brunch on our last day in Taipei. Spoilt for choices, but we had only enough stomach space to try the following places.

台北夜市 2015 Taipei Night Market Part 3

IMG_1314

Tonight, we decided to check out a smaller night market, 遼寧夜市 Liaoning Night Market. It was only one stop away at 捷運南京復興站 Nanjing Fuxing Station from our hotel.

Upon reaching the station, in our excitement, we exited the nearest gate to find ourselves facing two exits, and nowhere to walk to Exit 2 😮 The station map indicated that it might be a long walk to the other end, so we sought help from the station control. The staff seemed to meet blur tourists like us all the time, and very calmly gave us a laminated card and guided us through the gate and sent us along the direction to the correct exit, located at the green line side. We then passed the card to the staff at the other counter and we were good to go!

Once we were out of Exit 2, we made a right turn to 遼寧街 Liaoning Street, away from the huge pedestrian crossing. We then walked though a somewhat curvy small road to reach 遼寧夜市 Liaoning Night Market. This is a rather local night market and there is no clustering of stalls or closure of roads. We tried out 2 of the more popular stalls.

台北夜市 2015 Taipei Night Market Part 2

So after our walk at 永康街 Yongkang Street, we decided that we shall conquer a couple of night markets along the 中和新蘆線 Zhonghe Xinglu Line (Line 4) since last night we did the same along the 板南線 Bannan Line (Line 5).

There were a couple of night markets located conveniently along the line, notably 輔大花園觀光夜市 Fuda Flower Night Market located right next to 輔仁大學 Fu Jen University, and 三和夜市 Sanhe Night Market located near to 捷運台北橋站 MRT Taipei Bridge Station.

We had initially planned to come here the day before (Thursday), but realized (only in the afternoon) that 輔大夜市 Fuda Night Market closes on Mondays and Thursdays! To think we had thought that all night markets in Taipei open daily, haha.

永康街 Yongkang Street @Da’an District, Taipei

We made our way to 永康街 Yongkang Street after breakfast and walking around 華陰街 Huaying Street. We were here the last time using LadyIronChef’s article but somehow we didn’t recall seeing the street as it was now. Haha…

We were just walking around after exiting from the MRT station, and were quite shocked at the rather high price tags everywhere! So we were just strolling along when we saw a huge crowd at 思慕昔 Smoothie House and another smaller crowd at 天津葱抓餠.

天津葱抓餠

We had read about this 葱抓餠 online and decided to get a 九层塔加蛋 Basil and Egg Flavour (NT35). Despite the smaller crowd, it was a relatively long wait because the stall was also preparing a huge order at the same time – the size of a box of 5-rim A4-size paper worth! So for every 5 prata made, they would take one order from the queue. By the time we got our food, the queue has grown really long!

This is one of the “popular queuing food” 知名排隊美食 on Yongkang Street. We observed that the helpers would use the spatula and hit the prata to make it fluffy and full of texture. Then he would pass to another helper who would put it on top of an egg and add other ingredients like ham, cheese, and basil. Eaten while hot, this oily prata was quite fragrant and the basil gave a refreshing lift to it.

華陰街 Huaying Street @Datong District, Taipei

華陰街 Huaying Street is very near to 台北轉運站 Taipei Bus Station and also known as 台北後火車站商圈 (Back of Taipei Train Station Business Area) and is just behind our favourite breakfast place 老園環食品, so that was where we went after breakfast. We then realized that most of the eateries are only open from noon onwards, except for a few pushcarts.

There were also some local department stores. Do not be deceived by the small shop front; we went into one that had 2 floors! The stores are very similar to what we have in Singapore, selling all sorts of daily utensils and what-have-yous. Walking here could easily be mistaken as walking in Toa Payoh Central!

We walked through the entire street and very soon it was time for lunch!
