The Lobby Lounge @Intercontinental Singapore

2016-03-12 15.14.30We were pleasantly surprised that there was a Coffee Edition of Afternoon Tea at The Lobby Lounge after its renovations, and we decided to try both the Royal Heritage Afternoon Tea and the Not-An-Afternoon Tea Coffee Edition.

For $42++ per person, each set came with choice of one Mocktail and a selection of coffee/tea, and 3 tiers of 13 small bites.

For Mocktail, I had the Golden Lady, which was a refreshing iced TWG Rose Boudoir tea with delightful tones of lychee fragrance. Hubby had the Iced Copacabana, which was like milk chocolate that was made up of Brazil expresso, cream and milk.

Teppei Restaurant @Orchid Hotel

2016-03-02 22.17.38We finally set foot on the legendary Teppei Restaurant, where the current reservation queue is half a year!

Hubby was following Teppei’s Facebook page for any last minute cancellations, and it appeared that we were always missing that little bit of luck. But our chance came on one fine day in Dec 2015 where Teppei opened up a few slots at the same time for the next few months. Without missing a bit, hubby messaged and secured two seats for the 8:30pm session on 2 Mar 2016!

After a not-so-long wait of 3 months, we arrived at the restaurant full of expectations, and saw that the 6:30pm session people were just finishing their dessert and taking their leave.

Your Woul Korean Restaurant @Goldhill Centre

2016-03-01 22.56.38Ms K had a craving for non-BBQ Korean cuisine, and Your Woul seemed to have pretty good reviews. Judging from the fact that it has been operating for quite a while at this location, we decided to give it a try!

The restaurant was opened by a Korean family and has a typical Korean local atmosphere surrounding it, with Korean aunties shouting in Korean and patrons chatting loudly with occasional drinking glass knocking. What we like most about Korean restaurants is definitely the small plates of appetizers that are served before and during the meal. Some restaurants offer free-flow of appetizers but in Your Woul, it’s just two rounds of 6 different titbits.

Windowsill Pies @Upper Thomson

imageYet another lazy Sunday afternoon for this unfortunate couple who had been taking turns falling sick throughout the Lunar New Year period, and we did not really feel like eating much today. Thus, pies became lunch!

Located at a quiet corner behind the main Upper Thomson road (behind UOB), we were first greeted by a X’mas tree outside, followed by a huge teddy bear!

Being a corner unit, an entire wall was turned into glass, which instantly brightens up the place and provided an extended view for customers as they sat and laze the afternoon away…

S’MORES Artisan Coffee and Creamery @Upper Thomson

We had to give the relatively new kid on the block a chance 🙂

S’MORES Artisan Coffee and Creamery opened around the same time as the Korean dessert cafe, and has a cafe shop front, and a studio behind.

We came in thinking of having waffles for lunch, but noticed that they serve all day breakfast as well, so we got ourselves a Big Brekkie ($11.90 nett) and an American Slam ($11.90 nett).

The main difference between the 2 was that the former had 2 slices of toast, while the latter had 2 small pancakes. The food was alright, but we supposed that waffles were supposed to be the main draw, judging from the posts on Instagram. And of course the ice-cream which we didn’t order because we were still sick. 😦

Elemen 元素 @Thomson Plaza

We decided to go for a healthier meal today, since we were both sick 😦 We vaguely recalled that there was a new vegetarian restaurant at Thomson Plaza, and made our way down.

As it was the Lunar New Year period, there was a festive set available, and being rather lazy people, we went ahead with the 8-course Abundance Menu 元素丰年套餐 ($88.80++ for 2 pax), which consisted of…

[closed] Nunsongyee (눈송이) Korean Dessert Cafe @Upper Thomson

image[Update: Nunsongyee Korean Dessert Cafe was closed and replaced by Hello Arigato.]

Another new kid on the block, Nunsongyee (눈송이) Korean Dessert Cafe has replaced Rida La Cuisine and started operations only from 26 Jan 2016. We were searching for coffee after dinner, and were almost ready to go into SMORES (another new kid on the block), when we overheard someone walking by in her group and saying that the food was just alright… And so we headed to Nunsongyee instead. Haha…

imageIt was our first time trying bingsu, and we had no idea that shaved ice could be so pricey 😮 We decided to share a Cheesecake Bingsu ($14.90) and a Cafe Latte ($5.80). We were given 2 cute pens as gift upon our order 🙂

A short wait later, our food was ready!

Bingsu is a popular Korean dessert, made up of mainly finely shaved milk ice, with a variety of toppings. The shaved ice here reminded us of grated coconut!

The cheesecake crust went quite well with the shaved ice, and was not at all sweet. There was a cup of condensed milk blend/watery condensed milk by the side, but we did not use it.

When we dug in further into the bingsu, we discovered the hidden pool of condensed milk blend inside it. The scoop of ice cream topping also added to the sweetness. The coffee was just alright, but it served to keep us warm after eating so much ice, haha!

Sparks Cafe & Bistro @Thomson V One

2016-02-03 20.51.11 We were back here today, now that Sparks has started serving mains 🙂

We were at Sparks several months back (when we visited Five by Five who is their neighbour) and had their signature sugee cake. We were told then that they were preparing to begin serving mains. Given their standard of sugee cake, we were quite anticipating what they could come up with and they finally started!

2016-02-03 20.51.20So we tried an Oven Baked Duck ($16.90), and Rosemary Chicken ($15.90).

The duck leg was juicy and fragrant, and the homemade cranberry sauce was quite sweet and fruity. The half spring chicken was a bit dry, but the generous amount of rosemary made it quite fragrant too.

Both mains were served with mash potato and salad. The mash potato was deliberately served cold to balance the dish, and we felt that it was delicious with the bacon bits all mixed in to provide the texture and crunch.

There’s no service charge or GST.

ことぶき居酒屋 Kotobuki Japanese Restaurant @Holland Village

This seemed to be a relatively new restaurant, and the January promotion of a Deluxe Don Special caught our attention.

We entered the restaurant around 6.45pm, and the waitress very enthusiastically informed us that all food orders (excluding drinks), were entitled to 20% discount, if we ordered before 7pm. Hence, we just quickly browse through the first page of specials and placed our orders, plus an additional sashimi platter. After our orders had gone through, another waitress came to inform us that specials on the first page were not entitled to discounts… Well done! Truth to be told, now that we had a chance to slowly browse through the menu, there was indeed very fine print on that specials page indicating that there was no discount available. We guessed that the waitresses just needed more training.

The Populus Coffee & Food Co. @Neil Road

2016-01-21 19.37.25

Wifey was at a meeting nearby so we decided to drop by The Populus for dinner. We had walked past on Tuesday but it was closed. We had wanted to try out this place since it opened in Oct 2015 but had not been able to. Lucky for us, it was a Thursday today and they closed at 10:30pm!

The Populus is just a few shops away from The Lokal along the same Neil Road. It has quite a large seating area with a simple, modern deco. Warm lights on a high ceiling creates a homely atmosphere where friends can just gather and chit-chat over food and coffee.

Plain water is self-serviced and they accept credit card payments for totals above $50, which is quite steep in my opinion. Lower than that, you can pay by cash or NETS.
