Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee @AMK

Queued for 15mins!

Queued for 15mins!

The famous Soi 19 wanton noodles has arrived in Singapore!

Soi 19 (19 街) is apparently a very popular wanton noodles near Platinum Fashion Mall in Bangkok. But of course we didn’t know that since it was ages ago that we went to Bangkok. After hearing about this place from Ms W, we gotta come here and try it!

At around 9.15am when we arrived on a nice Sat morning, there was already a snake-long queue formed! However, the queue moved along quite fast and we managed to get our noodles after a 15 minutes wait.

The menu was simple: Regular 小 ($3.50 with one fried wanton, 2 soup wanton, char siew and leafy vegetable), Medium 中 ($4 with extra noodles) or Large 大 ($5 with extra noodles, ingredients and Chinese sausage or lup cheong).

We also found out later that you could order a Regular and top up a dollar for the yummily-fried lup cheong!

The Alley Cafe @Keong Saik Road

Simple indulgence

Simple indulgence

After a lovely porridge dinner nearby, we decided to walk around to look for places to cure Hubby’s caffeine fix.

Chanced upon The Alley Cafe on Keong Saik Road. We wanted pancakes but it was not available, so we ended up ordering the last slice of cake at the counter.

The Flat White ($5) was alright and the Earl Grey Cake ($7.90) had a slight tea flavour that was overpowered by the sweetness…

Not too satisfying for an after-meal, but at least the service was quite good, as the serving staff were all smiles and very quick to replenish our water without us having to ask 🙂

Tea Bone Zen Mind @Emerald Hill

Beautiful place!

Beautiful place!

Ms J promised to take us to this secret tea place for a 3-course tea sampling course ($45 nett per pax) and we had been so looking forward to it! We were surprised to be able to find such a peaceful sanctuary right smack in the middle of town 🙂

It was a 5 to 10 minute walk from Somerset MRT, and luckily, J had sent us a picture of the door without signage so that we knew exactly where to look for!

After pressing the bell (actually, we should have pressed the button of the intercom instead), we were welcomed to the lovely tea place!

It was huge with 3 floors and mezzanine floors, with private rooms and common rooms. After removing our shoes, we walked in and were greeted huge goldfishes swimming in the indoor pond!

Whampoa Drive Food Market and Centre

Famous Fried Oyster

Famous Fried Oyster

Famous Rojak

Famous Rojak

After so many years of working in this area, I finally discovered Whampoa Market and Food Centre!

There were 3 blocks – Blk 90 caters to the evening crowd, Blk 91 is more for day crowds (only the fish head steamboat plus a couple of drinks stall opened on both evenings that we were there), while Blk 92 is the wet market.

Wheeler’s Yard @Balestier

Obligatory shot!

Obligatory shot!

We finally made it here after seeing so many of it all splashed over social media!

It was relatively quiet on a weekday late afternoon, and we had the whole sofa to ourselves. We enjoyed a Flat White ($5), a Blueberry Yogurt Tart ($6), and a Elderflower Soda ($4.90).

Kopi break!

Kopi break!

The flat white was not bad, but La Ristrettos Coffee Boutique and Yahava KoffeeWorks were still better. I didn’t really like the tart because I had bitten on 2 really hard bits (of fruit I think) in a tiny mouthful of tart. The Elderflower soda was quite fragrant and not too sweet.

It was a nice place to chill out, in fact, we were so chilled out that we fell asleep…

The Coffee Daily @Serangoon Gardens

Simple exterior

Simple exterior

Wifey was meeting her friends at Arbite so I took a trip to The Coffee Daily and waited for her there. We had been wanting to come here but were distracted the last time. So this time I was determined not to be distracted and went straight to The Coffee Daily.

I had heard a lot about this place, about how it started with a few friends, and had been meaning to visit. Fate has it that it changed hand before we visited, and this is now the second owner. But they kept the name and most of the deco.

There is a long, tall table in the alfresco area and more seats inside with air-con. Not much interior deco was done, and they left the rustic look-and-feel with cement floors and plastered walls, giving the place a nice, old-school charm to it. It helps, of course, that the surrounding environment is also within a quaint neighbourhood..

Arbite @Serangoon Gardens

White Ginger Lily Tea

White Ginger Lily Tea

It was a brunch meet up with my girlfriends, while hubby went for his latte fix elsewhere. It was my second time here!

Today, we shared an Arbite Breakfast ($17) and Apple Strudel Pancakes ($14), and I decided on a White Ginger Lily Tea ($6). For desserts, it was Gula Meleka Tiramisu ($8) and My Wife’s Chocolate Cake ($8).

The little one had some strawberry pancakes and  milkshake, but she was really more engrossed with the bottles of lego pieces available in the cafe 😀

Woo, the scrambled eggs and spicy sausage of the breakfast set really stood out! The pancakes were also fluffy and delicious, and we were 3 happy women. We could not quite taste the gula meleka in the tiramisu, but I preferred the light and fluffy tiramisu to the very chocolatey cake.

Cafe Hopping @Everton Park

So I took a one-day leave and ventured all the way to the East for Sitex 2014. Nothing much to see, but I managed to buy a pair of Timberlands from Timberlands Outlet sale in another hall. Haha…

So while waiting for wifey to end work, I travelled all the way from the East to Everton Park. This area has grown to include many of the artisan cafes that Singaporeans flock to. And with The Pinnacle@Duxton just opposite the road, you can be sure that there’s bound to be huge patronage. But most of them closes quite early, around 6-7pm so it was quite a challenge for us to try them out, since we stopped work at 6pm.

Bread and Hearth @Keong Siak Street

After dinner indulgence

After dinner indulgence

We had a hard time trying to find a cafe on a Monday night… This was our 3rd attempt tonight!

Bread and Hearth is a small little bakery, specializing in handcrafted artisan bread, where every bread and pastry is baked using traditional European methods.

We didn’t had any bread though, but the Latte ($5) and Gryphon Straits Chai Tea ($4.50) were great! We did try the Raisin Roll ($2.80), as there was a current promotion of coffee and any $2.80 bread for $6.90. We enjoyed the rasin roll too!

We loved the relaxed atmosphere, with lovely music and 3 couples having their own quiet moments 🙂

Note that there is a current UOB credit card promotion, 10% off total bill.

Les Bouchons @Ann Siang Road

Les Bouchons front

Les Bouchons front

Hubby had a craving for steak and he had been reading rave reviews on Les Bouchons, so off we went to Ann Siang Road (of course we had to make reservations first because apparently this is a very popular place)!

Les Bouchons was actually opposite Lolla (which we went with G and friend the last time), and reviews were full of praise on the steak-frites (steak and fries). This chain of French restaurants started in 1998 and there are now 5 of them along Club Street, each serving a slightly different clientele with their different offerings, and some more in Robertson Quay.

The place is quite small, with only 6 tables or so inside and a couple more alfresco tables. Interior deco has an European-like with heavy chairs, wooden tables and oil paintings. Lighting was not excessively bright but rather soothing and comfy to make dining a cozy affair.
