吕记北京甑糕 Beijing Steam Cake @Shichahai, Beijing

After dinner at 烤肉季 Kaorouji, we strolled around the area, which had plenty of night-life activities! Bright lights everywhere, it was definitely different from what we have seen so far.

20161023_212837We also went to the nearby 烟袋斜街 Yandai Xiejie aka Skewed Tobacco Pouch Street, which is named  after the Chinese pipe, 烟袋 Yandai, that was traditionally sold on this street. Despite being a relatively short street, there were many interesting shops selling a wide variety of stuff.

After we had walked enough to create some space in our stomach, we went back to this 吕记北京甑糕 that we saw when walking from the Subway station earlier.

The word 甑 (zeng in fourth sound) refers to the ancient kitchen utensil made of clay that was used to steam mainly rice.

For ¥20, we got a set of 4 cakes with all 4 flavours and toppings. The texture of the cake reminded us of  Kueh Tutu aka Putu Piring, and the flavours were sweet and tangy, making it a lovely dessert!

烤肉季饭庄 Kaorouji @Shichahai, Beijing

2016-10-23-20-11-21Long ago, hubby had to travel for work, and he came to 烤肉季饭庄 Kaorouji for dinner alone. This time, there are 2 of us but eating the same amount of food, haha!

This was one of the most popular 清真 halal establishment and apparently, they started 160 years ago in 1848!

It started with a farmer whose surname was 季 who sold roast beef and mutton along 什刹海 Shichahai as a street hawker back in the days of Qing Dynasty. The meat dishes were so fragrant they attracted many praises from the people in the many big mansions along Shichahai, and began calling him 烤肉季. In those days, when it comes to roast meat in Beijing, people always say 南宛北季, with 北季 referring to 烤肉季 in Shichahai.

Hence, we definitely need to check out this place!

Day Trip to 金山岭长城 Jinshanling Great Wall @Beijing

2016-10-23-10-28-02We woke up extra early to visit 金山岭长城 Jinshanling Great Wall on our second day of arrival in Beijing!

Luckily it was still clear skies this morning, and we grabbed the buns that we bought last night and went to take the subway to 望京西站 Wangjing West Station.

At 望京西站 Wangjing West Station, we exited through Exit B, which led directly to an overhead bridge. We could see another bus interchange when we looked towards the right, but that was NOT the one. Instead, we took the stairs on the left at the end of the bridge and turned right to see a small police station on the right. We kept walking straight, past the public toilets, and saw a bus interchange with 2 gates and took the left one that says 金山岭 Jinshanling.

We had arrived just before 7.50am this Sunday morning, and there were easily 30 people in front of us (There needs to be a minimum of 20 passengers before the bus will move off, and the bus has a capacity of 50 passengers.)! Continue reading

护国寺小吃街 Huguosi Hutong Snack Street @Xicheng District, Beijing

2016-10-22-20-10-19We finally visited Beijing!

Wanting to have a taste of old Beijing, our lodging for the first 2 nights in Beijing was very near 护国寺小吃街 Huguosi Street, aka Huguosi Hutong Snack Street.

This street was first formed in the Yuan Dynasty and was named after the former 护国寺 Huguosi Temple. It was reopened on 26 October 2011, after undergoing 2 years of renovations. It starts from 新街口南大街 Xinjiekou Nandajie in the west and ends at 德胜门内大街 Deshengmennei Dajie in the east, and forms an intersection in the middle with 棉花胡同 Mianhua Hutong towards the north, and 护仓胡同 Hucang Hutong towards the south. It is a popular street known for its wide variety of snacks.

Though the hotel staff recommended that we should take a proper meal before trying out the snacks (as she was not sure if we would like the flavours) we opted to just snack our night away. Do note that most of the restaurants are not authentic local Beijing food, as we were told that most of them were opened by non-Beijing Chinese.

​Peperoni Pizzeria @ Upper Thomson

2016-10-18-20-56-20A new pizza joint has appeared in Upper Thomson after Crust Pizza closed. Hubby was most excited to try out this place!

  • Rosticciana ($28 nett): This was a rather small rack of oven-roasted, herb-marinated baby back ribs (5 ribs), served with leafy salad and wedges. The wedges were not bad. While the baby ribs were quite tender with a sweet glaze, there was a rather overpowering pork smell that made this dish less than satisfactory.
  • Salmone ($19 for 9 inches): Fresh salmon, caramelised onions & capers as toppings, we enjoyed the thin-crust pizza very much!

I suspect we will be back here again to try out the rest of the pizza flavours 🙂

Lokkee @Plaza Singapura

2016-10-10-13-50-51There was a special 25% discount off Lokkee’s ala-carte menu today, special thanks to Nathan Hartono and his excellent performance in Sing! China.

Lokkee is TungLok Group’s latest F&B venture offering global Chinese cuisine.

The restaurant is a witty and cheeky play on favourite Chinese recipes which have been given a unique tweak to include a dash of Western influence.

The interior of the restaurant is very contemporary but the tables were too close to each other and waiters had a hard time maneuvering their way.

Project Açaí @Holland Village

2016-10-03-19-51-18We had thought that this was a dessert place whenever we walked past previously, and we decided to pop over for a break.

The açaí fruit is supposed to contain lots of antioxidants and high in fibre but with low GI, allowing one to feel satisfied even with a small portion.

We got ourselves a medium Original Flower Bowl, and a Medium Nuts for Açaí Bowl.

It was our first time trying out Açaí bowls, and it felt like eating frozen yoghurt.

Both were chockful of ingredients, pretty to look at, and refreshingly delicious! We did enjoy eating them, but still felt abit hungry after that.. haha 😛

NOW Noodles+ @Square 2

2016-09-28-19-32-43A relatively new restaurant in Square 2 with a simple menu (5 noodles options all priced at $9.80), we had tried the Mee Tai Mak and Heng Hwa Noodle Soup. Sides were $2.80, and we had the Chicken Mid Wings.

We had read many good stuff about the Mee Tai Mak, aka Lao Shu Fen (because it resembles rat tails). Stir-fried with their signature rempah, with minced prawns, pork, fishcake, mushrooms, eggs, and century egg, it was pretty good, but not “wow” for us. Despite the flavours, somehow something felt missing.

Served with chicken drumstick, egg, lily flower, black fungus, snow peas, bak choy, and fried shallots, we could definitely taste the ginger in the clear broth of the Heng Hwa Noodles (mee sua), but it was also slightly on the sweet side. It was also the only soup option here. Not bad if you prefer something lighter for a meal.

The four pieces of half mid-wings had good batter, and was juicy and tender; we liked it!

​Blocs Inc Speciality Coffee @Paya Lebar

2016-09-10-17-47-36We were on our way to Paya Lebar MRT when we spotted this little cafe near the bus stop.

The coffee looks promising, and indeed, the Flat White ($4.20) was strong and smooth! The Matcha Latte ($5.50) could do with a bit more matcha flavour though. For some reason, it felt like drinking warmed milk despite the promising colour.

This was nonetheless, a nice little stop for us before continuing the journey.

In fact, we came here again for a pit stop a few weeks later, this time having a Latte ($4.20) and Hot Chocolate ($4.50). Today’s latte was fragrant, strong and bitter, but just a tad too hot. The hot chocolate was a soothing milky blend that was not overly sweet.

Prodigal Roasters @AMK

2016-09-11-09-18-00It was time to check out this new little cafe!

This was our third attempt to come here because we kept missing the opening hours, haha.

This place had a minimalist feel to it; its layout allowed for a table in the front, and 2 high tables at the end of the shop, with some standing space in the middle. More of a takeaway cafe, but we also enjoyed sitting at the high tables, and watch the world go by.

  • The Miso Cheese Tart ($4.50 nett) here was excellent. We never knew miso and cheese could go so well together!
  • The Paprika, Bacon, Mushroom Quiche (P.B.M.Q, $4.50) was served warmed, and it was nice! There was a little heat from the paprika, and the overall texture was quite lovely.
  • The Latte ($4) was more acidic and less milky, but the strength was just nice for hubby.
  • The Hot Chocolate ($4) was rich without being overly sweet or too heavy; I liked it 🙂
