Postre DIY Bakery & Cafe @Jalan Leban

Our dinner spread

Our dinner spread

This appeared to be a new kid on the block (we realized later that it had only started operating from 1 Jun 2015), so we gave up our usual haunts and came here for dinner instead 😛

Besides beautiful cupcakes and brownies prominently displayed in the fridge, Postre serves main courses which come with vegetables, dessert, fruits, soup of the day and coffee/tea, and without GST or service charge, so it sounds really affordable!

(And from 1-5 Jun 2015, they were having a 15% discount as part of opening promo!)

We decided to try a Prawn Spaghetti ($12.90) and a Ham and Cheese Stuffed Pork Cutlet ($14.90). We also upgraded to a Latte (UP $4.90, or top up $1.50 with main course), and a pot of Earl Grey with milk (UP $7.90, or top up $2.50).

Tai Lei Loi Kei 澳门大利来记猪扒包 @nex

Polo Pork Chop Bun 菠萝猪扒包

Polo Pork Chop Bun 菠萝猪扒包

We have been wanting to check out this place as it was always crowded whenever we walked past!

Today we were at nex bright and early, so it was a good opportunity to come here. True enough, the entire place was empty 🙂

Chicken Wings

Chicken Wings

We decided on a Polo Pork Chop Bun 菠萝猪扒包 ($6.90 nett, with $1 for egg) and topped up $5.60 to make it into a set, with Iced Macau Milk Tea (UP $2.80) and Chicken Wings (UP $5.90 for 6 wings).

The polo bun was not the crispy hard crust type, but its sweetness was a good complement to the rather salty but quite jucy pork slice. The wings were very juicy and salty, so it would be better to eat it with the rice option. Milk tea was pretty standard fare, but really helped to balance out the saltiness of the food…

mr bean @Toa Payoh

Surprise from mr bean!

Surprise from mr bean!

We were surprised that there was savoury beancurd available here, and quickly got ourselves a bowl of Signature Savoury Beancurd ($3.50, inclusive of GST).

Hot beancurd topped with spicy minced meat and fried onions, it tasted like tofu that we get from the usual zhi char stalls, just that it was a little too salty.

Quite an interesting twist to the usual beancurd 🙂

Mamak Culture @Toa Payoh

1-For-1 Offer!

1-For-1 Offer!

There was a 1-for-1 offer for Western food (usual price $8.90) at Mamak Culture, so we got ourselves a chicken with Hainanese sauce,  a fried fish with chilli crab sauce, and a less sweet teh tarik ($1.90).

The teh tarik was excellent! Very smooth and not too sweet or acidic, we finished the drink in no time!

We were in for a little surprise when we saw our mains. There were 3 fried fish fillets but only 1 not-too-big chicken thigh meat. The sauces were also given in rather small quantities and were barely sufficient. However, the chicken was very juicy, and we preferred it to the fish. I guess its a choice of quantity versus quality? Sides includes potato wedges, baked beans and coleslaw. Certainly value-for-money with the promotion!

We rather enjoyed the food, but the service was very slow. We had to wait for the staff to prepare the orders of the previous customers before he would take our orders. So it was a good 5 to 10 minute wait by the counter, followed by more waiting while they prepare our orders 😮

Dulcet & Studio @Liang Court

Wonderful after-dinner delights!

Wonderful after-dinner delights!

We ended our evening with a Super Light Cheese Chiffon Cake ($7, inclusive of GST), a Cafe Latte ($5.50) and a Match Latte ($6), at this little cafe by the corner.

The cake was really light, with the very addictive fresh cream…!! Made us feel like wanting more 🙂

I also loved the slightly bitter, and not so milky matcha latte 😀 It had a hint of toasted seaweed, and was really quite yummylicious without being too filling.

The rather aromatic cafe latte was quite strong and acidic, and hubby considered this a better-than-average brew.

Pecori Japanese Egg Restaurant @Meidi-Ya Liang Court

Gyu Suji Omu Rice

Gyu Suji Omu Rice

We were wandering within Liang Court and found Pecori Japanese Egg Restaurant rather appealing, with the huge omu rice menu!

The staff offered us samples of the cream, curry and mentai sauces so that we knew what we might be getting ourselves into 😛 Finally, we decided on a Gyu Suji Omu Rice ($16.80, inclusive of GST) and a Roast Demi Omu Rice ($15.80).

Roast Demi Omu Rice

Roast Demi Omu Rice

The tomato rice with the slightly undercooked omelette was quite delicious! The beef stew chunks had looked quite tough, but was much softer than it looked. The beef pieces were quite fatty though, so the meat with fats was quite a good combination for hubby, but I was not such a fan. The roast demi omu rice was 3 deep fried items – prawn, mashed potato, and fish fillet. Eaten while still hot, they were delicious!

For this price, we also had free flow salad (+$2 during lunch), soup and coffee/tea. Really quite value-for-money! The salad bar was quite simple, with lettuce, seaweed, corn, shredded cabbage and spaghetti, and today’s soup was seaweed soup. The salad was a good complement to the omu rice, and we enjoyed the meal!

Note: The shop accepts cash only.

Eighteen Chefs @AMKHub

Fish & Bird Platter

Fish & Bird Platter

A rather popular eatery located on the top floor of AMKHub, the queue was usually pretty long!

Probably because of the reasonable pricing with only GST and no additional service charge (plus student discounts), and relatively good food, thus making this place a popular choice for students! This place is also halal-certified 🙂

It’s a rather fuss-free casual place. Basically, you fill up the order chit based on whatever you fancy from the menu, go queue to order and pay up, go get cutlery and free warm or cold water while waiting for the food to be served!

The BetterField @Waterloo Street

Tupelo Honey Fig White Tea

Tupelo Honey Fig White Tea

Flat White

Flat White

The Better Field was tucked away at a relatively quiet corner and it was fairly crowded when we visited on a Sat evening.

We ordered a Flat White ($4.50), Tupelo Honey Fig White Tea by Tea Forté ($4), and a Secret Thai Chilli Chicken ($14.50) to share.

Secret Thai Chilli Chicken

Secret Thai Chilli Chicken

The 8 pieces of chicken drumlets were deep fried, with chili sauce and coriander leaves all over them. The overall effect was mildly spicy and I loved the taste of coriander! Unfortunately, I found some white hair / very long chicken feather in one of the drumlets, urgh!

The coffee was quite mild and not acidic, and it had a lovey aroma! I also loved the light fragrance of the tea, and the slightly sweet taste.

Overall, quite a nice and affordable place to chill out, especially when all items were nett price. We also read that there were some special off-the-menu drinks, but we were too full to try… Guess we gotta come back again 🙂

天天到福建炒虾面 @AMK

Yummylicious!

Yummylicious!

After a not quite satisfying dinner, a friend who stayed around this area recommended that we should either try Froz, which was around the corner, but closed on Thursdays, or the apparently very famous Hokkien fried prawn noodles at the nearby market and food centre.

Without further ado, we made our way to the food centre, where only the sinful food stalls were still opened – BBQ satay, fried char kway tiao, and of course, the fried prawn noodles. We were contemplating what to try when suddenly a queue formed in front of the prawn noodles, and since Singaporeans love to queue for food, we made our decision!

The prawn noodles were cooked in batches, and we had to wait a while for a fresh batch to be made. That meant that we had a piping hot plate! The smallest version was $3.50 a plate, and the portion was quite small, but the noodles had soaked up all the delicious seafood broth and was really quite excellent! Do try a little bit of the super potent spicy chilli, which went very well with the noodles, but could be too spicy for some. The chilli was so good that if you wanted extra chilli, it would cost you another $0.50!
