Asia Grand Restaurant 亚洲金阁 @Odeon Towers

img_4249Almost on a whim, we decided to try our luck at Asia Grand Restaurants on a Saturday noon, without reservations.

We enquired for seats at the entrance, and the conversation went…

Staff: I have a table for 3, but can you finish by 1pm? Because the table is reserved from 1pm onwards.

(We all looked at our watches, it was already 12 noon!)

JY: Are you able to serve fast enough?

Staff: No problem.

Super confident sia! We went in without hesitation because we were also very confident of our eating speed, plus hubby and I were not too hungry since we had breakfast and coffee/tea within the last 2.5 hours 😛

La Nonna @Holland Village

IMG_4229We were looking for something new to try, at Holland Village but alas, the new Cantonese restaurant (Full of Luck Club) is still not yet opened (it opens tomorrow 20 May 2016!!!).

Taking a quick stroll along Lorong Mambong, La Nonna seemed rather popular. We quickly settled down and got ourselves a chef’s special of Squid Ink Spaghetti with mixed Seafood ($24++), and a La Nonna Pizza ($23.90++).

IMG_4228The tangy squid ink pasta was really good! We loved the sauce, and the al-dente pasta! The seafood were also very fresh, and very soon, we had very dark lips and very satisfied tummies!

The thin crust pizza was oozing truffle aroma goodness when it arrived, and we quite enjoyed it too. Somehow, the asparagus managed to retain its juice and sweetness, and the egg was sooooo runny.

This was a good dinner indeed 🙂 We were pleasantly surprised to find that there was a 1-for-1 promotion with UOB credit cards, so our pizza was free!

The Coffee Academïcs @Scotts Square

2016-05-16 18.00.47-2We decided to go along the Hong Kong theme today (since we just went Mak’s Noodle and Honolulu Cafe), and landed at The Coffee Academïcs.

Launched in 2012, TCA has 5 outlets in HK and this new huge space in Singapore was only launched this year. They are very serious about coffee and the Singapore flagship store has been designed with various coffee preparation stations like a Roasting Bar, a Brew Bar and a Cupping Bar and they organizes coffee classes too.

  • Citrus Espressoda ($8++): This is a time-limited concoction of double shot of TCA House Blend espresso bolstered with fresh orange slices and fizzy tonic water. A very refreshing drink!
  • Ginger Peach Green Tea ($10++ per pot): Pretty cup, fragrant smell, lovely smooth taste. What else can you ask for in a cup of tea? A truly awesome sensory experience 🙂

We would love to come back and try the other stuff on the menu!

Honolulu Café 檀島香港茶餐廳 @The Centrepoint

2016-05-16 15.54.24After our not-too-satisfying lunch, we went back to Honolulu Cafe, only to discover that not only had the queue not moved much, it had also grew longer! Resigned to our fate, we began our 1-hour queue. Luckily, JY and AN were coming to join us 🙂

Because of ‘overwhelming response’, each person was allowed to ordered a maximum of 3 egg tarts. Everything else under Section A of the menu (Polo Buns, Durian Pastry, BBQ Pork Bun, Curry Fish Balls etc.) was sold out, so we just got ourselves 12 Honolulu Egg Tarts ($1.70++ each), Chicken Wings in Swiss Sauce ($6++), Peanut Butter Toast ($2++), Pork Chop Bun with Salad ($5++), 2 Honolulu Coffees ($3++), a Milk Tea ($3++), and a Yuan Yang ($3.30++). We were also strongly encouraged to order the only remaining dessert, Mango Pomelo Sago.

Mak’s Noodles 麥奀雲吞麵世家 @The Centrepoint

2016-05-16 14.37.16We were here for a late lunch, and the queue at Honolulu Cafe was too long. So, we headed to the empty Mak’s Noodles instead.

Ordered a Wanton Noodle Soup ($6.90++), and Beef Brisket and Tendon ($16.90++). For this price, we were quite shocked by the tiny size of the noodles, and even more shocked by the texture of the noodles, which was not at all springy. Well, but different people have preference for different texture.

The wantons were alright, but also reminded us of the shrimp dumplings that we used to buy at NTUC. We very much preferred the very flavourful beef brisket and tendon.

When we went to the counter for payment, the staff just responded with the total cost without even bothering to print the receipt, gosh!

Not exactly a satisfying lunch, so we decided to return to queue at Honolulu Cafe and hoped for the best… Somehow, this reminded us of our Hong Kong trip…

Sin Ming Roti Prata @Sin Ming

2016-05-16 10.32.51

We walked past this place a few months back and noticed a long queue forming. So we made a resolution to return on a day when we would have the time to queue.

So today happened to be the day! We ordered:

  • Fried Fish ($3): The small piece fish was actually quite nice, with firm flesh, and minus the super fishy smell that we sometimes encounter.
  • Coin Prata ($3.50 for a set of 6): This was awesome! Thick, crispy and still kinda fluffy inside, there was a nice sweetness and it tasted great even on its own.
  • Tissue Prata with Cheese ($3): This was not very crispy, not sure if it was because we added cheese. The cheese added a different aromatic flavour to it, and was not the overly salty type.

We would definitely come back for the coin prata and other types of prata!

Rochor Thai @Novena Regency

We had wanted to return to Kyushu Pancake Cafe to try French toast, but alas, it was all sold out 😦 So we went to the next most popular restaurant during this hour, Rochor Thai 🙂

Got ourselves counter seats where we could watch some chef action, but it turned out that all the dishes we ordered were prepared inside the kitchen, haha:

Two Tall Trees @Serangoon Gardens

2016-05-15 14.33.49It was time for drinks after food, and Ms F highly recommended this place!

We ordered a Coffee & Cake set ($10 nett for a $6.50 cake and a selection of coffee/tea ranging from $4 to $5), and I got myself a London Fog Tea Latte ($7).

  • Carrot Cake: A sweet and slightly moist version with plenty of nuts. A bit too sweet for us, but we liked the texture.
  • Café Latte: A strong cup of coffee with slight acidity, not bad at all.
  • London Fog Tea Latte: A blend of vanilla and citrus-flavoured Earl Grey Tea with steamed milk, there was a subtle sweet and smooth swirl of milk and earl grey undertones. I liked it!

There were plenty of food options here but we were too full to try. Maybe next time? 😛

Steam Box 蒸好食创意蒸汽火锅店 @Serangoon Gardens

It was a super late brunch (actually, almost lunch time), and this new place Steam Box caught our eye as something that looked rather healthy! They had just opened on 3 May 2016, and apparently dinner reservations were already fully booked.

Since we were rather early for lunch, we were the first customers of the day. The staff took time to explain to us how the entire process work, and how to use the steamer. Firstly we had to choose between the Century Egg and Pork Rib Porridge ($15++) or seafood porridge ($18++) as a base.

Next, we get to pick what we wanted to steam on top of the porridge, so that the juices will drip into the porridge for additional flavours. The big portions of meat are exactly double the size and double the price as the small portions, so the advice was to just try out small portions and add on if you like the items. The items are served on coloured plates, so we knew exactly how long we had to set the timer by checking against the timing list for each colour, and we could just cook the same coloured plate items together. We like this concept 🙂

Kyushu Pancake Cafe 九州パンケーキ @Novena Regency

2016-05-13 20.55.28 2016-05-13 20.59.15New kid on the block near the area and we were quite lucky to get seats immediately on a Friday night!

Then we realised that it was already last order 5 minutes after we were seated, haha! Without hesitation, we ordered:
