Short trip to 愉景灣 Discovery Bay, Hong Kong

2016-12-11 17.57.16We had read about the Discovery Bay Christmas Market, and decided that it was worth our time to travel to Discovery Bay.

With the Discovery Bay Christmas Market on-going, plus the free ferry ride back to Central offer, we figured that we gotta make reservations for dining at D’Deck in Discovery Bay.

Among all the restaurants, Koh Tomyums appeared to be highly recommended. Our hotel helped us made the reservations 😀

Having being side-tracked with snacks and some Pokémon-catching, we ended up reaching Discovery Bay rather late, but managed to browse through most of the shops at the Christmas Market. There was not enough time before sunset to do any of the hiking trails, so we decided to go to the restaurant earlier.

興記雲吞麵 Xing Ji Noodle Shop @Tai Koo, Hong Kong

After some Googling, with our wobbly legs, we wobbled over to the nearby 興記雲吞麵 Xing Ji Noodle Shop.

A small eatery, the DIY menu and prices were pretty straightforward. We could choose up to 2 items, and there were 4 kinds of noodles for selection.

We quickly got ourselves a 招牌雲吞幼麵 Signature Wanton Thin Noodles (HK$17) and a 牛腩鯪魚球河粉 Beef Brisket and Dace Fish Balls Hor Fan (HK$22) to share.

The noodles was really springy, and the wantons were huge and fresh. The hor fan (rice noodles) was smooth and easy to slurp. The huge dace fish balls and beef briskets were delicious too. Unfortunately, the soup was a tad too salty for us, and we had to go in search of water after our otherwise rather delicious meal.

翠華餐廳 Tsui Wah Restaurant @Central, Hong Kong

There were not many breakfast options near our hotel on a Sunday morning, so we decided to try the chain restaurant 翠華 Tsui Wah at Central before taking the bus at Exchange Square for our hike on Wilson Trail.

There were plenty of seats available, and we decided to share a 冰鎮菠蘿油配奶茶 Pineapple Bun with Iced Butter served with Milk Tea (HK$28), and a set with 沙爹牛肉即食麵 , 嫩滑炒蛋，牛油豬仔 配咖啡 Satay Beef Instant Noodles in Soup, Scrambled Eggs and Buttered Crispy Bun with Coffee (HK$36).

Taste-wise, you cannot really go wrong with instant noodles in Hong Kong 😀 The beef was also quite tender.

They forgot our pineapple bun, and we had to chase a couple of times. Served warm, it was not bad at all.

老爺點心 LoYe Dim Sum @Wan Chai, Hong Kong

2016-12-10 20.26.28We were checking out our Instagram feed when something caught our eye, and we found that it was near where we were! Without further ado, we went to check it out!

LoYe Dim Sum is a modern fusion restaurant that gives a twist to old-school dim sum delights to transform them into Chinese fusion delicacies!

We were initially seated at a smaller table for 2, but once a bigger table was available, we were given the option to shift 🙂

We decided to go with a few interesting dim sum items, since we were still rather full from the entire day of eating…

金鳳茶餐廳 Kam Fung Cafe @Wan Chai, Hong Kong

2016-12-10 18.16.38We had wanted to try the polo bun with butter and milk tea here, but alas, by 6pm, the polo buns were already sold out. Since the minimum order was a drink per person, we decided on:

  • 原裝凍奶茶 Iced Milk Tea (HK$20): This was served cold without ice, and it was smooth and strong and not overly sweet. Since there were no ice cubes, the tea remained flavourful throughout. A really lovely cup of milk tea!
  • 熱檸啡 Hot Black Coffee with Lemon (HKD$20): Hubby did not add any sugar to his drink, so it was a very interesting blend that was aromatic, bitter and sour.

Being near to closing time, it was relatively quiet and we had a relaxing time chilling in the little bench seats with our drinks, in this little quaint place.

​甘牌燒鵝 Kam’s Roast Goose @Wan Chai, Hong Kong

2016-12-10 14.35.55This was a really tiny restaurant that could probably sit about 40 customers, so it was no surprise that the queue outside was really quite long. Perhaps it was also not a surprise that there were many Singaporeans in the queue, either waiting for seats or taking out… haha!

We got ourselves a queue ticket just before 2pm, and figured that we should probably grab a bite elsewhere first, before coming back to wait for our turn. And we remembered seeing 檀島咖啡餅店 Honolulu Coffee Shop on our way walking here… 🙂

We managed to enter the restaurant at 3:10pm, and that was because quite a few others who decided not to wait after all.

​檀島咖啡餅店 Honolulu Coffee Shop @Wan Chai, Hong Kong

After getting a queue number at 甘牌燒鵝 Kam’s Roast Goose, we crossed the road to 檀島咖啡餅店 Honolulu Coffee Shop for a quick lunch first. At 2pm, it was fairly crowded, but there were still seats available. Once settled down, we opted to share a main and of course, the famous egg tart.

​Coco Espresso @Central, Hong Kong

After our sinful but yet satisfying brunch at 一樂燒鵝 Yat Lok Restaurant, we decided to have coffee nearby before continuing our food trail.

This was Coco Espresso’s 4th branch in Hong Kong, opened in 2015. They started their first Coco in 2007 at Queen’s Road Central and expanded since in Hong Kong island with its cozy industrial-look interior and nice coffee.

It was quite packed, and we decided to just stand and share a skinny latte (HK$35) by the long counter table. Thankfully, a couple of stools became available while we waited for our drink.

It was a smooth and moderately strong cup of coffee with a slightly acidic undertone.

​四季煲仔飯 Four Seasons Pot Rice @Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong

2016-12-09 23.54.04四季煲仔飯 Four Seasons Pot Rice was highly recommended by my cousin, and it was very near 美都餐室 Mido Cafe.

After a relaxing afternoon tea, we strolled to 四季煲仔飯 and discovered that a queue had already started forming just after 6pm. The queue moved quite quickly though, and we got our seats around 20 minutes later.

We got ourselves a 臘腸滑雞飯 Chinese Sausage and Chicken Claypot Rice (HK$53)，鴨蛋蠔餅 Duck Egg Oyster Cake (HK$20 for 2 pieces), and 通菜 Kangkong with Fermented Beancurd (HK$40). Food arrived quite quickly too!

The 鴨蛋蠔餅 Duck Egg Oyster Cake had the aromatic duck egg flavour and there was a generous amount of oysters. The batter was quite light and crispy. Overall, it was not too oily, and we really enjoyed it!

The rice in the 臘腸滑雞飯 Claypot Rice was really fragrant and soft! Really quite awesome, but the charred bits would stick and were not as crispy as the one we had at 坤記 the previous night. The Chinese sausage was yummy too! The chicken was very tender. We really liked the claypot rice here!

The vegetables was a good way to balance out the meal, and as usual, fresh and delicious 🙂

美都餐室 ​Mido Cafe @Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong

20161209_1653262016-12-09 17.41.39Since we were in the nostalgic mood today with 蓮香樓 Lin Heung Tea House in the morning, we figured we should continue with the mood at 美都餐室 Mido Cafe.

A short but lovely ferry ride from Central to Tsim Sha Tsui, plus a short walk later, we arrived at 美都餐室 Mido Cafe!

We went up to the second floor, and as we walked, we were transported back in time, with the traditional tiles and old-school windows. The seating was very spacious, which was really quite rare in Hong Kong!

It was a quiet time at 4+pm, and we just chilled out with a 凍鴛鴦 Iced Yuanyang and 凍奶茶 Iced Milk Tea (HK$20 each). The drinks were nothing to shout about, and the minimum spending was HKD$20 per person. Food items seemed rather expensive (not sure if the portions were huge), but since we were planning to have dinner at 四季煲仔飯 Four Seasons Claypot Rice nearby, so we did not bother trying any.
