Bukit Chagar Roti Canai @Johor, Malaysia

IMG_7623We went on a day trip to Johore again!

And first up was this popular roti canai (or roti prata in Singapore) near the JB custom.

Despite being quite near customs, it took us a little while to find the correct route to this little corner. And it didn’t help that it was raining heavily.

We reached around 10.30am, and split up the work; one went to queue and order, while the rest of us try to secure a table.

We ordered Roti Canai Kosong (RM1 each), and by 10.45am, all roti canai was sold out. We were one of the last few customers, lucky sia!

Day trip to Skudai, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

IMG20180118144347So, Ms. T heard all about our funny road trip to Johor Bahru the last time, and she wanted to join in the fun.

We decided to make another trip in before Lunar New Year, before the crowds descend into Johor Bahru for Lunar New Year shopping. This time, we would explore more of Skudai area.

Ms. T was like, “So we meet around 10am and go JB for lunch?”… And was quite stunned when we said we should be having our second meal by 10am *LOL just kidding*

We met up at 8am, and the jam wasn’t too bad… so we managed to cover quite a few things today 🙂

Our itinerary:

San Low Seafood Restaurant 三楼海鲜园 @Johor Bahru, Malaysia

We had a late dinner because we were really too full from this trip, and also because we waited a while for seats at this place and another 1 hour for the food to be served 😮

IMG_5405

Tried the famed San Low Bee Hoon, along with black pepper chicken, beancurd with minced meat, and sweet potato leaves with fermented beancurd (RM75.65 for 4 pax, including drinks). Gotta say the food was really just so-so… 😡

JWC The Bear and Fish @Skudai, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

We definitely needed some drinks by now 😛

The Classic Cold Brew (RM16) was really aromatic and the lingering taste after a sip was quite heavenly. The Mixed Fruit Tea (RM17.90) was quite refreshing, and the Cornpuccino (RM15) was interesting, but we thought the Cold Brew was the best! We also shared a sesame cheesecake which was not bad.

We liked the space here and chilled for a while before going for more shopping at the nearby Sutera Mall.

Restoran Wah Cai 3-in-1 Chinese Cake 华仔三合一招牌年糕 @Skudai, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

We were really full but that didn’t stop us from having some local snacks 😛

In addition to deep fried Chinese New Year Cake 年糕, Restoran Wah Cai 3-in-1 Chinese Cake 华仔三合一招牌年糕 also sells a variety of fried snacks including cempedak, tapioca, sweet potatoes, yam, green bean, bananas and durians. Price ranges from RM 2 to RM 4.50 per piece.

We tried the Chinese New Year Cake 年糕 (yam and green bean flavours) and they were yummy! The batter was really crisp and didn’t feel too oily. I felt that the yam was really fragrant 🙂

Taika Huat Teochew Braised Duck 八哩半大家发鸭肉 @Skudai, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Boy, it was difficult to find this place! Google Maps took us through tiny lanes and all to reach here 😮

A rustic place literally under a huge tree, this place was famous for its Teochew-style braised duck. Not only did we order the braised duck meat, we also tried braised duck head, braised pig trotter, intestines, giblets, braised egg, beancurd skin and kway tiao soup (total RM 88.50 for 4 pax). Basically whatever that was still available since we arrived way past lunch time (scroll through the IG post for more photos).

We totally enjoyed this hearty meal, especially the duck and kway tiao soup! The broth and gravy had a delightful herbal flavour 🙂 Also, I think this was our first time trying duck head, and it was quite flavourful.

Definitely our best meal for this trip 🙂

Paradigm Mall @Skudai, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Paradigm Mall Johor Bahru is really big and spacious! We spent about 3 hours here but only covered a few shops 😛 This was also where we found this really comfy t-shirt which all 3 ladies ended buying 😀

In between shopping, we found time for drinks at TRDLO (Lot K02, Level 1). Drinks were not bad, and our friends were really interested in the Lunar New Year goodies on display 😛

Hubby and I also had to try Isaac Toast when we discovered a stall here (Lot K12J, Level 3)!

It tasted way better in Seoul… maybe because of the weather?

Tasixi Hong Kong Dim Sum 大四喜香港点心 @Skudai, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

We managed to reach our breakfast joint just past 9am and we were hungry! So many choices, so little stomach space. In the end, we managed to try 11 items and tea for RM66.

Items that we enjoyed included the herbal siew mai, herbal chicken feet, otah (aka otak-otak) and red meat roll. I also thought that the xiao long bao was not bad, but our friends preferred the Ding Tai Feng version 😛 The prawn in the har gaw was very fresh too 🙂

Ms T also enjoyed the small meat bun which she said the skin was quite stretchy and not dry… she had the skin while we had the fillings 😛

The rest were pretty standard, but the fishball was a tad too fishy for our liking.

We enjoyed the buzzing atmosphere of this place and the staff was pretty friendly. A lovely way to kick start our day trip 🙂

Day Trip to Johor Bahru, Malaysia

IMG_5057

AEON Tebrau City

After our maiden trip together to Johor Bahru using public transport, Ms. K volunteered to drive in so that we could explore further places 🙂

Our itinerary for the day:

It was a hilarious trip, as we kept missing exits and kept finding ourselves doing unexpected u-turns on the expressways (isn’t it expensive to build flyover u-turns?), or hubby as navigator said to turn left, and Ms. K immediately turned right. My contribution in the car was… Endless laughter, LOL!

Still, being a relaxed trip, we had a lot of fun getting lost and seeing different parts of Johor Bahru 🙂 And yes, we plan to drive in again!

D’Laksa (KSL Mall) @Johor Bahru, Malaysia

We were filled to the brim after dinner!

But we had parked in KSL Mall, and I recalled that I had tried a very yummy assam laksa in the mall before.

After much cajoling, Ms. K declared that she would just take one bite, so that we would not regret not trying it 😛

We ordered a bowl (RM6) to share. It was an addictive combination of sweet, sour and spicy… and Ms. K definitely had more than a bite! I felt a sense of achievement, LOL!
