Twenty Grammes @AMK

We were in this area to see our GP (who is very good, but the queue is always super long queue…), and to our horror, the wet market and food centre was closed for renovations! So we had to walk around the area to hunt for food, and were happy to discover this relatively new cafe that was relatively empty 😀

Twenty Grammes has a main branch in North Bridge Road (which we had wanted to try but have not had the chance to), and this AMK branch just opened its doors in Oct 2015!

The Carvery @Park Hotel Alexandra

2015-11-16 21.24.22I was around the area these few days and hubby decided to travel all the way here to have dinner together 🙂

Park Hotel Alexandra has just opened recently beside IKEA Alexandra (one of the few up and coming hotels located away from the crowded downtown area). He thought that The Carvery looked pretty good, so he booked a table for two and that was where we were headed!

Located on the 7th floor of the hotel, where the pool was, we enjoyed quite a lovely view of the area. It felt very relaxing to be here! The restaurant was spacious and since it was a weekday, there were not many customers around so we felt like we had the entire restaurant to ourselves!

Five by Five @Thomson V One

2015-10-24 10.38.21We were here so many times but they always ran out of mains or waffles!!

So finally, on a fine Saturday morning, we decided to try just one last time before giving up (they can’t possible run out of mains or waffles from the morning right?)…

And this time, we managed to get seats and food 😀

We were glad that we made the effort to come here again (and again, and again…), because the food was so yummy!

In fact, we returned 4 days later for dinner 😛

THREE by Table Concepts @Seletar Mall

After an early morning movie date on Mars, we popped by THREE for lunch!

With Thai, French and Japanese options available, we were really quite spoilt for choice! Our decisions led us to…

  • Thai Garlic Pork ($9.80++): Served with the refreshing Thai mango salad, the pork was slightly dry but it was quite flavourful and the taste kinda grew on to us as we kept chewing.
  • Penne & Roasted Chicken ($16.80++): The half chicken was really quite huge, and very juicy. The penne was not bad, but it got a little gelat when it cooled off.
  • Signature Duck Leg & Linguine ($23.80++): This was supposed to be the signature, but unfortunately, it was slightly disappointing. The duck confit was quite dry and became really greasy after some time. The Aglio Olio linguine was more spicy than usual, but we liked the texture.
  • Thai Chendol ($6.80++): A rather sweet dessert served with red ruby and jackfruit strips, gula melaka and coconut milk, I really enjoyed the different layers of intense and aromatic flavours. My favourite item of the meal 🙂

Water was self service, and we were seated just next to it, so it was really convenient! There were a few orange slices within the water container, giving the water a slightly refreshing taste.

Overall, some hits and misses, and certainly something different from the usual chain restaurants found in shopping malls.

Tendon Ginza Itsuki @Tanjong Pagar

2015-10-24 18.42.23We finally tried it!!

On this not-too-particularly-hungry early evening, we figured that we could probably withstand a bit of queuing 😛 The queue started from around the corner of the shop (it’s located at the end of the building) to almost the end of the building wall when we arrived, only about 30 minutes into dinner service. The shop was very socially responsible and put up the PSI level at the start of the queue to remind customers on the haze situation.

Some time into the queue, a waiter came out and asked for the number of persons in our party, and to take our orders. We couldn’t really remember how long we took to queue for seats. Maybe around 30-45 minutes, judging from the timestamp of our photos. 🙂

Black Sheep Cafe @Thomson V Two

This is our second visit here, and we were absolutely wow-ed by the food tonight!

We had initially wanted to go to another cafe within the same building, as the food was sold out the last time we went (after 9pm). Little did we know that no food was available at 8pm (despite the menu saying last order at 9pm). So disappointed. Guess we were not fated to go to that cafe.

Which was a good thing today, because we had a really fabulous dinner 🙂

Shabuya @Vivocity

2015-10-14 19.13.03We were in need of some hot and comforting food, and shabu shabu sounded like a great idea. We walked into Shabuya and had the buffet ($45.90++ per adult), but on hindsight, we should have probably gone for the set meal instead.

For the buffet, we had our own individual pots, and unfortunately, the induction cooker that I had only 2 options – off, or high heat. Sheesh!

Service appeared to be much faster for customers who ordered the sets, and while the hotpot ingredients were certainly very fresh, there was just this “short-of-something” feel to it. The lamb was good, and not too gamey. Unfortunately, the chicken was sliced far too thin, while the beef were sliced too thick, and it was difficult to chew through the fats. The sashimi was too frozen, and not sliced properly; some of the pieces were stuck together. The tiger prawns were fresh and sweet, and the rest of the seafood items were quite ok. We also tried the sotong balls and cheese balls, and we preferred what we buy from NTUC.

We were seated near the entrance, and it was a little annoying that we had lots of difficulty trying to the the attention of the staff to order food, while the staff manning the entrance (the restaurant next door appears to be by the same owner / group) were having lots of fun playfully hitting each other and giggling uncontrollably.

We do not think that we will be returning anytime soon.

Chui Xiang Kitchen 醉香小厨 @Casuarina Road

The previous fishhead steamboat place had closed down, and a new air-conditioned eatery has spring up last week. This was just next to the famous zhi char, and we were glad that there was a new option! Service was quite good, as all the staff were very friendly, and the food was served very quickly… But we were the only ones eating 😛

Royal China @Raffles Hotel

We finally tried Royal China Dim Sum!!

Special salad: red and orange capsicum, rock melon, pear, and spring onions, with crushed peanuts, jellyfish and crab meat, a very refreshing dish that reminded us of lo hei for Lunar New Year

海皇灌汤饺 Minced Seafood Dumpling in Superior Soup ($9.50++ per pax): The dumpling was huge and skin was thin. Soup was flavourful.

鲜虾菠菜饺 Steamed Spinach Dumpling with Prawn: We loved this! Very fragrant and simple delight.

鲜虾韭菜饺 Steamed Chives Dumpling with Prawn: The dumplings were so stuck to the paper in the steamer, we were actually quite skeptical about this item. Surprisingly, the slightly thick skin was very chewy and QQ, but it did not stick to our teeth! However, the fillings were not as aromatic as we had hoped.

香芒流沙包 Steamed Bun with Salted Egg Yolk and Fresh Mango Juice ($4.80++ for 3 pieces): This was very delicious, and the salted egg yolk flavour was really distinct. We loved that it was more savoury than sweet.

Clinton Street Baking Co. & Restaurant @Purvis Street

We woke up bright and early today, because we had reservations with Royal China for an early lunch… And since we were to be in this area, might as well wake up a bit earlier and check out Clinton Street Baking Co. & Restaurant (the renowned bakery from NYC famed for its pancakes, burgers, biscuits and other freshly-baked goods), which hubby had been wanting to try out.

So here we were, at 8.30am, at the half-full restaurant. Looks like there were many early risers 🙂

The restaurant is brightly-lit and together with the white walls and high ceiling gives a very roomy atmosphere. It is sufficiently big but people have been flocking here (at least for these first few months of soft opening) so there’s always a queue. Breakfast menu is served all-day and lunch menu (with the award-winning buttermilk fried chicken & waffles, house made burgers with hand-cut fries and special handcrafted mocktails) is served from 11:30am.
