Cafe Hopping series: Butter Studio @Jalan Besar

Cosy deco

Cosy deco

Ok, we didn’t actually intended to continue with cafe hopping today… We actually wanted to have an early dinner and call it a day, because I was really super tired. After freshening up at City Square Mall and enjoying the cooling air-conditioning for a while, we decided to go to Swee Choon for dinner since it was just nearby.

So we started walking and walking, and when we finally arrived, we then realised that it only opens at 6pm… Silly us forgot to check the opening hours! With about 50 minutes to spare, we decided to hang around somewhere nearby, and chanced upon Butter Studio!

Cafe Hopping Series: Old Hen Coffee Bar @Rangoon Road

Concentration

Concentration

Our next stop was a 20-minute walk away, which was good because at least we got to digest some of the food in our tummies 🙂

We walked along the small lanes, spent some time taking pictures with JY’s Polaroid camera… It was very hard work and I was so afraid of dropping the camera 😮 stressed! But fun! Haha! She took a really nice picture of us 🙂

Hubby was also pretty good at it, and of course, I was the half-past-six one, concentrating very hard on trying to focus without even thinking about the background, argh! I wasted film 😦 but JY was very encouraging lah… Hahaha!

Since we were already nearby at the Flee Away Cafe, we decided to drop by Rouse too! We couldn’t get a proper table, so ended up at the long table by the mirror wall. It was initially kind of strange to be staring at oneself so up close and personal, but very soon we were having a lot of fun taking selfies!!

Cafe Hopping Series: Flee Away Cafe @Dunlop Street

Let's Flee Away!

Let’s Flee Away!

Bright and cheery!

Bright and cheery!

Today we were going cafe hopping with Ms JY!

First stop was to Flee Away Cafe for brunch/lunch. Initially we were worried that it might be crowded, but our worries were unfounded – only another table was occupied when we arrived around 12:45pm.

Joe & Dough @Orchard Gateway

Newly opened at Orchard Gateway

Newly opened at Orchard Gateway

“Life is too short for bad coffee”, says the big signage at Joe & Dough, and the available sofa seat was beckoning to us. We figured that to have the courage to put up such a signage, the handcrafted coffee must be pretty good right?

Amirah’s Grill @Bussorah Street

Turkish Mixed Tenderloin Kebab

Turkish Mixed Tenderloin Kebab

We ended our day by paying a visit to Arab Street, hoping to catch some of the Hari Raya festivities. But alas, we must have came too late, because the street foods were mostly sold out.

Walking along Bussorah Street, most of the restaurants were very crowded, so we decided on Amirah’s Grill when we spotted some empty tables! Also, I recalled having dinner here once with my colleagues and the food was not bad (there were posters of awards hanging on the walls). The deco was very middle-eastern with lots of carpets and leather seats, and with (very) loud music playing in the background.

It was difficult to get the staff’s attention, but once we settled down, food was served rather quickly.

The Orange Thimble @Tiong Bahru

Beautiful paintings

Beautiful paintings

After satisfying my porridge craving, it was time to satisfy hubby’s craving. We decided to go to The Orange Thimble!

Not too sure what to make of this place. What we did like was that there were more private seating inside the cafe, so we had an entire corner to ourselves 🙂

The walls were lined with paintings of street views in Tiong Bahru, and we thought that they were just lovely; apparently these pieces were painted entirely using stylus and Samsung mobile phone, Wow!

Ah Chiang Traditional Charcoal Porridge @Tiong Bahru

Nice little corner

Nice little corner

I’m always game for a bowl of good Cantonese porridge and so decided to drag hubby back to try the porridge here after walking past at least 3 times today… Haha!

This coffee shop is wholly occupied by Ah Chiang, and they serve bean curd drink too (but we didn’t order that). Deco is old-school nostalgic feel, very much blends itself into the whole atmosphere of the area here.

Loo’s Hainanese Curry Rice @Tiong Bahru

Long queue!

Long queue!

Lots of dishes to pick

Lots of dishes to pick

We read about this place in the Tiong Bahru Heritage Trail guide (it’s both a walking guide and a food guide) and we absolutely had to try it!!

The stall is located in a coffee shop just opposite Tiong Bahru Food Centre. Although there are other stalls in the coffee shop, none had the long queue! Seems like everyone was here specifically for the curry rice! And who can fault them? Curry rice with the famous Hainanese pork chop, huge piece of bean curd and braised cabbage, all for the price of $4.20!

We were one-third through the Tiong Bahru Heritage Trail (that’s another entry altogether!) and chanced upon this cafe! Enticed by the word “homemade waffles”, we decided to stop here for a short break 🙂
