華星冰室 Chrisly Cafe @Shau Kei Wan, Hong Kong

Wonderful spread

Wonderful spread

We had read about this rather popular Cha Chan Teng 茶餐廳 and decided to come here for breakfast before doing the heritage trail on our 2nd day in Hong Kong!

At 10am on a hot Saturday morning, there was a relatively long queue. Thankfully, the queue moved rather fast and we were seated within 10 minutes.

We ordered 黑松露炒蛋多士 Scrambled Eggs with Truffle on Toast (HKD 40),特色猪扒包 Devil’s Pork Chop Bun (HKD 20), Coffee and Milk Tea. The scrambled eggs were really very excellent! Moist and buttery, it was an oh-so-heavenly breakfast option! The thick toast was soft and went well with the eggs. The pork chop bun was really a devil because of the very spicy wasabi mayonnaise 😮

Note that Chrisly Cafe is also known as Capital Cafe.

一樂燒鵝 Yat Lok Restaurant @Central, Hong Kong

Big signboard so that you won't miss

Big signboard so that you won’t miss

We had read about the Top Five Roast Goose in Hong Kong and that the roasted goose here at Yat Lok was really good!

And so, we were very focused: 馳名脆皮燒鵝下庄 Quarter Goose with Drumstick (HKD 150), and 腐乳通菜 Kang Kong with Fermented Beancurd (HKD 25). No rice for us, because we wanted to fill our tummies with the meat, and the vegetables was meant to ease the guilt (and greese), just a little 😛

Beautiful roast goose

Beautiful roast goose

The vegetables was very refreshing and we loved the fermented beancurd sauce! But the star was really the perfectly balanced fatty, meaty, juicy roasted goose!

Not only was the skin crispy-good, the meat was also very juicy and tender! It was so much better than that famous Yung Kee 鏞記 (which incidentally is only one street away)!

This has now become our MUST come place (besides Kam Wah Cafe) whenever we will be in Hong Kong in future!

蘭芳園 Lan Fong Yuen @Central, Hong Kong

Iconic red and green push cart

Iconic red and green push cart

What is a trip to Hong Kong without going to a Cha Chan Teng 茶餐廳?

Lan Fong Yuen 蘭芳園 started as a dai pai dong 大排檔 in 1952 and is supposed to be very famous for stocking milk tea 絲襪奶茶 and pork chop bun 豬扒包 and we just gotta come here after our latte 🙂

Pork Chop Bun, Yuen Yong and Milk Tea

Pork Chop Bun, Yuen Yong and Milk Tea

The small eatery kept the iconic signboard and dai pai dong cart (which you can instantly recognize from many travel magazines) and had only a few tables within the full-of-Alan Tham-pictures-wall. We had 金牌豬扒包+凍絲襪奶茶 Pork Chop Bun + Iced Milk Tea (HKD 34) and 凍秘製鴛鴦 Iced Yuen Yong (HKD 20).

I loved the strong milky tea! I’m really not sure how they do it, but it was oh-so-smooth, happiness in a cup! The yuen yong and pork chop bun were pretty standard fare though.

Fuel Espresso @IFC Mall, Hong Kong

Delicious carrot cake

Delicious carrot cake

After our excursion to Lamma Island, the Central Star Ferry Pier was just next to the IFC Mall, so we thought that it would be a great idea to stop by Fuel Expresso for a little perk-me-up!

At 3pm on a Friday, this place was packed to the brim, with many people doing take-away 😮 We waited a short while for a table, and decided on a hot Cafe Latte (HKD 48 nett) and the recommended Carrot Cake (HKD 40 nett). Rather pricey as compared to Singapore!

However, the coffee was really quite good; we enjoyed the strong and slightly acidic flavour, and it had this sweet aftertaste! The carrot cake was moist and not overly dense, in fact, it was slightly fluffy! The cake itself is not really sweet, and the cream cheese topping was of the right amount of sweetness for me… It was a perfect combination when eaten together! What a happy coffee break for us 🙂

泰苑鱼翅海鲜酒家 Tai Yuen Shark’s Fin Seafood Restaurant @Lamma Island, Hong Kong

Today's Special

Today’s Special

After our walk from Yung Shue Wan 榕树灣 to Sok Kwu Wan 索罟灣, we deserved a good lunch!

We also missed the ferry by 15 minutes or so, and it was a good 2 hours wait for the next one. The restaurants were well aware of the schedule too, as one called out to us, telling us that it was a long wait to before the next ferry would come and so we should have lunch while waiting, and another one tried to entice us with their private ferry schedule…

We walked up and down the stretch of restaurants (and seeing the ever popular Rainbow Seafood) before finally deciding on Tai Yuen Shark’s Fin Seafood Restaurant 泰苑鱼翅海鲜酒家 and ordered the set for 2 (HKD 248). It was probably the cheapest set available across all restaurants, and the ala-carte menu also had prices listed, unlike some others, so we felt more comfortable eating here.

蓮香樓 Lin Heung Tea House @Sheung Wan

Established brand in Hong Kong

Established brand in Hong Kong

We stepped foot on Hong Kong again!

Our last trip here was Mar 2014 (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3) and we were Scooting early into HK again this time!

We touched down at 6am, and took no time to breeze through the custom and immigration (since we have no checked-in luggage), bought Octopus Cards, took Airport Express, and changed to MTR! By 7:16am we were already at The Mercer Hong Kong dropping our backpacks as we started off with our first day at the land of dim sums!

Lin Heung Tea House 蓮香樓 is very near the hotel, and we reached at 7:25am but the place was already packed with the morning crowd, especially when it opens it’s doors from 6am everyday!

Postre DIY Bakery & Cafe @Jalan Leban

Our dinner spread

Our dinner spread

This appeared to be a new kid on the block (we realized later that it had only started operating from 1 Jun 2015), so we gave up our usual haunts and came here for dinner instead 😛

Besides beautiful cupcakes and brownies prominently displayed in the fridge, Postre serves main courses which come with vegetables, dessert, fruits, soup of the day and coffee/tea, and without GST or service charge, so it sounds really affordable!

(And from 1-5 Jun 2015, they were having a 15% discount as part of opening promo!)

We decided to try a Prawn Spaghetti ($12.90) and a Ham and Cheese Stuffed Pork Cutlet ($14.90). We also upgraded to a Latte (UP $4.90, or top up $1.50 with main course), and a pot of Earl Grey with milk (UP $7.90, or top up $2.50).

Tai Lei Loi Kei 澳门大利来记猪扒包 @nex

Polo Pork Chop Bun 菠萝猪扒包

Polo Pork Chop Bun 菠萝猪扒包

We have been wanting to check out this place as it was always crowded whenever we walked past!

Today we were at nex bright and early, so it was a good opportunity to come here. True enough, the entire place was empty 🙂

Chicken Wings

Chicken Wings

We decided on a Polo Pork Chop Bun 菠萝猪扒包 ($6.90 nett, with $1 for egg) and topped up $5.60 to make it into a set, with Iced Macau Milk Tea (UP $2.80) and Chicken Wings (UP $5.90 for 6 wings).

The polo bun was not the crispy hard crust type, but its sweetness was a good complement to the rather salty but quite jucy pork slice. The wings were very juicy and salty, so it would be better to eat it with the rice option. Milk tea was pretty standard fare, but really helped to balance out the saltiness of the food…

mr bean @Toa Payoh

Surprise from mr bean!

Surprise from mr bean!

We were surprised that there was savoury beancurd available here, and quickly got ourselves a bowl of Signature Savoury Beancurd ($3.50, inclusive of GST).

Hot beancurd topped with spicy minced meat and fried onions, it tasted like tofu that we get from the usual zhi char stalls, just that it was a little too salty.

Quite an interesting twist to the usual beancurd 🙂

Mamak Culture @Toa Payoh

1-For-1 Offer!

1-For-1 Offer!

There was a 1-for-1 offer for Western food (usual price $8.90) at Mamak Culture, so we got ourselves a chicken with Hainanese sauce,  a fried fish with chilli crab sauce, and a less sweet teh tarik ($1.90).

The teh tarik was excellent! Very smooth and not too sweet or acidic, we finished the drink in no time!

We were in for a little surprise when we saw our mains. There were 3 fried fish fillets but only 1 not-too-big chicken thigh meat. The sauces were also given in rather small quantities and were barely sufficient. However, the chicken was very juicy, and we preferred it to the fish. I guess its a choice of quantity versus quality? Sides includes potato wedges, baked beans and coleslaw. Certainly value-for-money with the promotion!

We rather enjoyed the food, but the service was very slow. We had to wait for the staff to prepare the orders of the previous customers before he would take our orders. So it was a good 5 to 10 minute wait by the counter, followed by more waiting while they prepare our orders 😮
