Candlenut @Dorsett Residences

2016-07-25 20.33.14Yet another day ended with a late meeting nearby, and hubby went to la kopi at Roosevelt’s Diner  Bar while waiting for me. While I could find the correct MRT exit to Dorsett Hotel, I couldn’t find the cafe.. *faintz*

So hubby came to look for me, and Candlenut, who has just won a star in 2016 Michelin Guide Singapore, was just right there! There appeared to be some available seats close to 8.30pm, so we decided to try our luck and walked in without reservations 🙂

They were serving a unique Peranakan tasting ‘ah-ma-kase’ menu of inspired Peranakan cuisine at $68++ per pax, with a choice for dessert out of 5 options. We were not fans of sweet desserts, and I did not particularly like kuehs, so it was tough to choose!

Sembawang Traditional Claypot Rice@Sembawang

2016-07-10 12.38.14So we decided to pop by afterall!

We were actually not really hungry, and thought that it would be difficult to tabao the claypot rice if we could not finish it, hence we had:

  • San Lou Been Hoon 三楼米粉 ($4.80 nett for small): The other item with the largest picture on the wall, the exterior crispy charred bits with the soft bee hoon inside was yummy!
  • Salted Egg Sotong 咸香苏东 ($12.80): The coating was excellent, for it was very fragrant, and not at all sweet! Many times, the salted egg concoction was more sweet than salty, but this was not the case. You could taste and see the salted egg yolk goodness, the real stuff! Unfortunately, the sotong was a tad too overcooked.
  • Qing Long Cai 青龙菜 ($12.80): We liked the homely feel of this dish, and this veggie was a bit like chives, with a bit of crunch.
  • Teh C Kosong ($1.60): Oh my, finally a decent cup from the usual places where I get my usual teh c kosong!

Note: Warm water is available at 20 cents per cup. We could not finish the food and ended up tabao-ing, incurring an additional 50 cents for 2 plastic boxes (not too sure if there would be additional charges if we opted for plastic bags instead). Only cash is accepted here.

Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen @MyVillage

2016-07-03 13.09.49We were here to check out the recently opened ramen place!

Since we read that the Chef Tan-san was the first Tonkatsu Chef in Singapore, we figured that it might be prudent to order the Premium Pork Loin Tonkatsu Set ($19.90 nett), and the Tonkatsu Ramen ($14.90) which uses the normal pork loin.

Each Tonkatsu set came with roasted sesame (which we had fun grinding), tonjiru soup (which was awesome broth simmered with Japanese pork and very rich in flavour), pickles, fruits, as well as unlimited servings of Niigata rice and crunchy cabbage (which we could barely finished the first serving).

Ishinomaki Grill and Sake Bar @Palaris Renaissance

As part of our redeem-voucher-coz-Starhub-points-expiring exercise, we had a 1-for-1 $60++ 6-course Omakase deal at Ishinomaki Grill and Sake. It was a fairly popular place for Saturday lunch, and there were at least 2 other couples enjoying the same deal, all seated at the same corner of the restaurant.

East Bistro 東小馆 @Sembawang

We had past by here a few times in the evening, and it was usually very quiet. This time, we decided to come here for dim sum, resolutely walking past the relatively empty white beehoon along the way.

Dee Tongue Thai by Rung Mama @Golden Mile Complex

2016-06-13 13.31.31JY brought us to this restaurant for lunch (after our delicious pre-lunch snack), and it was indeed a good decision!

Food here was affordable and delicious, and service was efficient! What we had:

  • Grilled Pork Moo Yang ($12): This was a rather large portion for the price. The pork pieces were tender and juicy.
  • Thai Pork Omelette Kai Jeow Moo ($10): This had reallly good wok-hei, and we loved it!
  • Stir-Fried Water Spinach Pad Boong Fai Daeng ($8): This dish was a tad too spicy for us… Even after picking out the chilli 😮
  • Pineapple Fried Rice Kao Pad Sa Palot Yai ($7 for small, $12 for large): Very fragrant and had a good balance of sweet and savoury.

Note: Only cash is accepted, and water can be purchased for $1 per bottle.

Four Seasons Chinese Restaurant 文興酒家 @Capitol Piazza

We were here primarily for the duck, so we only ordered another vegetable dish… Mainly because the prices were really high! Here was what we tried.

  • Four Seasons Signature Roasted Duck 文興至尊燒鴨 ($68++ for whole, $36++ for half, $22 for 1 portion): The meat was quite tender, but it was not as crispy or fatty as the version we had in London. In fact, of the half duck that we had, only 2-3 pieces had crispy skin.
  • Poached Spinach with Century and Salted Egg in Superior Stock 金銀蛋菠菜 ($22++): This was just alright, and we thought that it would have tasted better with the usual Amaranth 苋菜. Most of the vegetables options were in the range of $22 to $24, which we thought was really quite pricey…

There were only Oolong or Chrysanthemum tea available ($2.20++ per person), and we opted for Oolong, which was a lovely complement to the duck.

Fu Ju Yuan Vegetarian Restaurant 福俱圆素食餐馆 @Novena Regency

I was here for our team lunch, and while we had initially thought that this place was just newly opened, it turned out that it has been opened since Lunar New Year!

For some reason, it appeared to be still not-quite opened whenever we walked past. In fact, most of the seats still had their plastic wrapper intact.

We were the only customers there during lunch today, but we all thought that the food was pretty good! However, the portions were quite haphazard; some large portions seemed smaller than small 😛 Prices ranged from $10 to $20+ per item, depending on size.

The mock meats were all handmade, and pretty good, if not a bit spicy. The cereal beancurd was very fragrant. Overall it was an enjoyable and delicious lunch!
