The Loft Cafe @Chinatown

Coffee & Tea

Coffee & Tea

We were here for some drinks, after a rather full meal.

Ordered a White Ginger Pear Tea ($6.80++) and a Flat White ($5.80++). The tea had a light sweet taste, which was quite lovely, but the coffee was like plain water… And without latte art. Hubby was disappointed 😦

The sofa seats were quite comfortable, until the air-conditioning started to drip water… Sheesh. We also didn’t really understand why we had to pay service charge when we had to carry our own tray of drinks.. Haha!

I supposed it can be a nice place to people-watch if you pick the seats by the window, and there is free WiFi (ask the staff for password), so it’s not a bad place to hang out for a couple of hours.

Pince & Pints @Duxton

Simple menu

Simple menu

We were told of this place when we went cafe hopping with Ms J quite a while ago but we never had the chance to visit. And then we went London and visited Burger & Lobster. And then we thought: should we still visit Pince & Pints, given that B&L was the best that we had visited?

So the chance came for the comparison and we gladly went ahead to try after we came back from Bangkok!

The space is not that big, and they don’t take reservations. And diners have only 1.5 hours to finish your meal so that they can get more people to try their lobsters! Deco is very simple and industrial, and they do have alfresco seats but I think they are more for people who wants to drink while waiting for their seats.

The concept is very similar to B&L in that they only serve 3 dishes. But instead of burgers, they served Chilli Lobster (ala Chilli Crab), together with Live Whole Lobster (Grilled or Baked) and Lobster Roll, all at S$48++ each. At approximately £23, these are more expensive than B&L, but are they worth that much?

La Pizzaiola @Teacher’s Estate

I was searching for dinner options and chanced upon this Italian restaurant, La Pizzaiola (they have another branch beside Wimbly Lu in Serangoon) which was within the Teacher’s Estate. Funny we didn’t noticed its existence when we frequented a rather delicious fish head curry restaurant that used to be in this area.

We tried one of the specials, Stracciatella with Homemade Bread and Fresh Rockets, the La Pizzaiola Speciale, and Spaghetti alle Vongole.

The Stracciatella (a kind of buttery cheese) was the highlight of the night! The accompanying bread was soft and warm, and when spread with the Stracciatella cheese and topped with the fresh rocket, made each mouthful a bursting happiness of flavours! The La Pizzaiola Speciale was a roast beef pizza and was extremely delicious too! The pizza base was not as thin as we would preferred it to be but it was soft and not as hard as some of the other ones which we have tried elsewhere. The roast beef was a fresh idea which we have not tried before but it blended pretty well with the rocket, the cheese and the tomato base. The pasta, on the other hand, was only marginally better than what we had at Jamie’s… I’m not sure, maybe this was how authentic pasta was supposed to taste like? But we really disliked this type of sticky pasta.

Overall, a pretty satisfied meal and I am sure we will be back for more!

Restaurant SELA @Seah Street

We had redeemed a 1-for-1 voucher and were very excited to try the food here! Hubby wanted a medium rare Beef Tenderloin with Purple Potatoes, Honshimeji, Broad Beans, Cherry Tomatoes and Veal Jus ($46++), while I was very attracted by the Alaskan King Crab with Angel Hair, Black Truffle Cream and Candied Ginger ($38++).

We totally loved the food here! The fresh crab meat was firm and juicy, and the sauce was so addictive with the pasta, that was of the right firmness… I cleaned the plate 😀 Hubby thought that the steak was done very nicely, very tender and flavourful!

While the usual prices were a little steep for ordinary dining, we gotta say that the quality of the food was really quite excellent 🙂 It would make a lovely choice for celebrations *hint hint hubby*

Table @ Pip’s @Orchard Central

We were looking for a quick dinner as we had to rush hone, and this place was empty! So in we came and ordered the weekly promotion of medium rare Char-grilled Ribeye (grain fed 100 days) served with Sautéed Mushroom ($23.90++), Braised Lamb Shank (stew) served with Sautéed Vegetables and Mashed Potatoes ($29.90++) and a Flower Pot Milo Tiramisu ($11.90++).

It was a rather long wait for the food, considering that we were the only customers. The ribeye was a bit too rare and too salty for my liking, but hubby enjoyed the lamb shank very much (abit too gamey for me). My favourite was the tiramisu! Not just because it looked so pretty, but also because it came with this layer of “soil” that was actually popping candies that went all fizzy in the mouths! Well, it was very sweet, but interesting.

The wait for the bill also took a while… So visit this place only when you have plenty of time to spare.

Benjamin Browns Bristro & Bakery @Forum The Shopping Mall

Wagyu Beef Burger

Wagyu Beef Burger

Hubby redeemed a 1-for-1 voucher, so we came here for dinner! It was quite funny that when hubby called up to make reservations, they didn’t even ask for the name or contact details… Which seemed to suggest that there was not going to be a crowd.

Indeed, there was only another 2 customers when we arrived around 7pm. Very quickly, hubby ordered a Wagyu Beef Burger ($23++), while I could not resist ordering the Seafood Aglio Olio ($23++).

Seafood Aglio Olio

Seafood Aglio Olio

Got to say that the seafood was very fresh, and the linguine was cooked quite al-dente. However, this must be the most oily version of aglio olio that I have ever tried… There was a huge puddle of oil left after I had tossed and finished the pasta 😮

Hubby was very happy with his medium rare beef burger! The beef patty was thick and juicy, and the egg yolk was runny and yummy.

For the price, we thought that the portions were quite small, but since we had a 1-for-1, it was still quite worth it 🙂

[shifted] Les Pâtisseries Cafe @Toa Payoh

Note: Les Pâtisseries has ceased operations at Toa Payoh and shifted to Upper Thomson.

Coffee and Tea

Coffee and Tea

It was dessert time! The Sugar app pointed us to this cafe, and I managed to get a pot of Contessa Grey Gryphon Tea for $1 (usual price $5.50) :p Being a bakery cafe, we decided to try the Torte Au Citron ($6 nett) and a Waffles with Summer Berries ($8.50). As usual, hubby had a hot Cafe Latte ($4.50).

Hubby felt that his latte was smooth and aromatic, with rather tame flavour… He liked that it was not too acidic.

The Contessa Grey was surprisingly light for a black tea, and had a slightly sweet citrus taste. The taste of eucalyptus was stronger than bergamot, but overall it was a lovely blend 🙂

Song Fa Buk Kut Teh @Seletar Mall

Our breakfast spread!

Our breakfast spread!

We had passed by Song Fa Buk Kut Teh in Chinatown Point and were very impressed with the queue! Today, as part of our attempt to stay healthy, we decided to walk to Seletar Mall, where another branch of this very popular bak kut teh chain was located. After a bit of hipcup (such as having shoes disintegrating halfway), we finally arrived at Seletar Mall 🙂

We were too early, so we went to the nearby Ya Kun for some drinks and cheesy French toast. Gotta say that while the coffee and tea were good, the wait for the toast was really long and the actual French toast was more salty than cheesy.

Anyway, at 10.29am, we were back to Song Fa and were amazed a short queue had already formed 😮

Mongkok Dim Sum @East Coast

After a really dissatisfying dinner, we decided to stroll around to make some space for another meal :p

Mongkok Dim Sum caught our attention with steam bellowing out within their glass windows.

Dim sum!! And so we made the decision to cross the road :p

Penny University @East Coast

Simple pleasures

Simple pleasures

I was in the east to visit a colleague, and so hubby decided to come over to the east for dinner 🙂 While I was having a blast at Ms L’s place, hubby endured a 1.5 hours bus ride 😮

Luckily, there was a cafe nearby, so we took a quick walk over to Penny University!

This place was rather popular when the cafe culture started in Singapore a while ago, but we never got around to come here. Simply because it’s in the East and we are very North people. Haha…

A very simple place with smooth lighting, and soft music. One thing good here is that there are newspapers and magazines lying around which also means that they expect you to nua here… 🙂
