The BetterField @Waterloo Street

Tupelo Honey Fig White Tea

Tupelo Honey Fig White Tea

Flat White

Flat White

The Better Field was tucked away at a relatively quiet corner and it was fairly crowded when we visited on a Sat evening.

We ordered a Flat White ($4.50), Tupelo Honey Fig White Tea by Tea Forté ($4), and a Secret Thai Chilli Chicken ($14.50) to share.

Secret Thai Chilli Chicken

The 8 pieces of chicken drumlets were deep fried, with chili sauce and coriander leaves all over them. The overall effect was mildly spicy and I loved the taste of coriander! Unfortunately, I found some white hair / very long chicken feather in one of the drumlets, urgh!

The coffee was quite mild and not acidic, and it had a lovey aroma! I also loved the light fragrance of the tea, and the slightly sweet taste.

Overall, quite a nice and affordable place to chill out, especially when all items were nett price. We also read that there were some special off-the-menu drinks, but we were too full to try… Guess we gotta come back again 🙂

天天到福建炒虾面 @AMK

Yummylicious!

Yummylicious!

After a not quite satisfying dinner, a friend who stayed around this area recommended that we should either try Froz, which was around the corner, but closed on Thursdays, or the apparently very famous Hokkien fried prawn noodles at the nearby market and food centre.

Without further ado, we made our way to the food centre, where only the sinful food stalls were still opened – BBQ satay, fried char kway tiao, and of course, the fried prawn noodles. We were contemplating what to try when suddenly a queue formed in front of the prawn noodles, and since Singaporeans love to queue for food, we made our decision!

The prawn noodles were cooked in batches, and we had to wait a while for a fresh batch to be made. That meant that we had a piping hot plate! The smallest version was $3.50 a plate, and the portion was quite small, but the noodles had soaked up all the delicious seafood broth and was really quite excellent! Do try a little bit of the super potent spicy chilli, which went very well with the noodles, but could be too spicy for some. The chilli was so good that if you wanted extra chilli, it would cost you another $0.50!

Rainbow Cottage Cafe @AMK

Flat White with no art

Flat White with no art

We were very excited to hear of a relatively new cafe opened in Ang Mo Kio, yeah! So today, we especially made reservations for dinner, after reading about the crowds in some reviews.

There were a grand total of 2 other people when we arrived :p But it was a weekday night, so perhaps that was the reason. It was good for us anyway, since we preferred a more quiet environment.

Deco was simple, but they have a small little children’s playground using the small slanted area beneath the staircase, which is complete with small kitchen so small kids can play act-kitchen while the adults indulge in the real food from the real kitchen. 🙂

The Clueless Goat @Goldhill Centre

We are not clueless!

We are not clueless!

We had thought about coming here for quite a while (it opened in Feb 2015), but somehow, we were always distracted by other food options in the area, and also a bit apprehensive if a cafe who calls itself clueless, has any clue about making good food and drinks? But here we were today!

This is a simple setup much like other cafes, with simple tables and chairs, ordering and payment at the counter, eat and go type of cafe. The interior is brightly lit and roomy enough to not give a ‘pressurizing’ feel. Overall a very homely feel and we enjoyed the ambience very much.

Our first thoughts were that the prices were very reasonable in this location, and there was no GST or service charge. Small wonder that it was fully packed!

The Cajun King @Serangoon

Dinner spread!

Dinner spread!

We had walked past The Cajun Kings during our previous trip to Wimbly Lu, and thought that we should check it out 🙂 It was full house during the weekday evening when we visited around 7pm. We did not really feel like eating the combos, so these were what we had:

  • Deviled Crab Cakes ($18++): Easily our favourite of the evening 🙂 Made with claw meat, grated egg, jalapena, and deep fried, the crab cakes were juicy and the crab meat tasted fresh.
  • Very pinkish... no?

    Very pinkish… no?

Lobster Roll ($34++): Supposed to be made from Maine lobster and served with brioche, we still think that Burger & Lobster was way better, and even the one at Market Grill was better. Well, we preferred this than the one we had at Pince & Pints. We did not really like the brioche here.

  • Southern Fried Chicken ($12++): The chicken appeared to be abit under-cooked, and the meat near the bones was very pinkish. The waitress assured us that they were definitely cooked though.

Water is free here, and we also appreciated the long stretch of basin to wash our hands before and after the meal 🙂

Hiang Ji Roasted Meat & Noodle House 享記燒臘麵家 @Toa Payoh

Claypot Rice

Claypot Rice

We were roaming around trying to find dinner at Toa Payoh Central, when we peeped through a corridor and there appeared to be a stretch of stalls hidden inside, so we thought that we should check it out!

The Chinatown Claypot Rice next to Hiang Ji was the most crowded, and there were some super powerful fans blasting at the tables, and thus our dinner was decided!

We ordered a Claypot Rice ($6), a platter of Roasted Duck, Roasted Pork and Char Siew ($14), and a plate of Kailan ($4) for a balanced meal 😛

A balanced meal

A balanced meal

The platter was the first to arrive, and we were most impressed by the char siew! It had a good combination of slightly charred meat and fats, and each piece was melting in our mouths… It was divine! The roasted pork was full of crackling crispiness but a bit too fat for my liking, and the roasted duck was just average.

The Kailan was quite oily, and came with lots if deep fried lard 😮 Not very healthy I guess.

We were told that we would need to wait for about 20 minutes for the claypot rice, and it was indeed worth the wait! The salty smell from the salted fish and Chinese sausage made our mouths water; coupled with the crispy rice stuck to the claypot (锅巴), and the amount of oil and dark soy sauce at your own control, the claypot rice was really very delicious! The chicken pieces were quite tender as well, and there were salted egg pieces, which complemented the rice very well! This was such an unexpected find!

The only down side was that they had ran out of bottled water, so we were really quite thirsty after the meal… Which gave us an excuse to look for a cafe…

Note that wet tissue is $0.30 per piece.

P.S. Cafe @Dempsey Hill

It seemed like a trip to Dempsey Hill without visiting P.S. Cafe would seem like an incomplete visit, since everyone raves so much about it.

Fresh Mint Moroccan Tea, Iced Wildberries Tea and Coconut Bakewell Tart

Fresh Mint Moroccan Tea, Iced Wildberries Tea and Coconut Bakewell Tart

So this became our last stop prior to dinner, with an order of hot Fresh Mint Moroccan Tea ($7.50++), Iced Wildberries Tea ($9.50++) and a slice of Coconut Bakewell Tart ($13++).

The first impressions were that the service crew really need to stay alert even during lull periods. Hot tea was served in a plunger without a cup, and the tart was served with no forks. We had to eat with our hands, perhaps? The cup appeared shortly after tea was served, but the forks never did, so eventually we had to try to locate a staff, which proved to be rather difficult as well, since they do not seem to want to make eye contact with the customers *faintz*

The iced wildberries tea tasted strangely like dried Chinese logans, but I liked that it wasn’t overly sweet, and the tart berries gave a refreshing twist to the drink. Hubby’s mint tea was very minty indeed! The soft tart was definitely coconuty, but I thought it tasted rather powdery. There was a very thin layer of berry-flavoured bits near the base, but did not make much difference to the taste.

This was not a bad place to chill, but we definitely preferred HOUSE.

HOUSE @Dempsey Hill

HOUSE occupies an entire block

HOUSE occupies an entire block

It was tea time, as we continued to explore Dempsey Hill on this Labour Day long weekend!

We strolled to HOUSE and managed to get seats by the floor-to-ceiling window, which was really lovely because we could look at all the greenery and still be enjoying the air-conditioning with adjustable blinds to have just the right amount of sunlight!

From it’s own website: “Perched atop Dempsey Hill, HOUSE is a 4,000 square-foot residence-gallery to everything that’s visually stimulating. From plates of comforting, creative gastronomy that combine local flavours with the global palate to tease and please curious taste buds; to the lush woodland surrounds, and even the stunning works of art dotted around the property – HOUSE possesses the elements of a true multi-sensory experience.”

The environment was truly soothing and relaxing, with huge spaces between tables, and we can’t help but noticed the smell of spa essence oils (which later we found out that there is indeed a spa that is in the same building, possibly owned by the same people. 🙂)

Tawandang Microbrewery @Dempsey Hill

It’s the Labour Day long weekend, and we are off to explore Dempsey Hill! We started our trip to Dempsey Hill at the Tawandang Microbrewery, with Thai style Petai with Squid ($22++), Thai Char-grilled Pork Collar ($22++), and a bowl of rice ($2++) to share.

Thai Char-grilled Pork Collar

Thai Char-grilled Pork Collar

Thai style Petai with Squid

Thai style Petai with Squid

The pork collar was delicious! Firm in texture, the fats to meat proportion was about 1:4. Dipped into the sauce, this was a heavenly combination!

The petai with squid was a disappointment though. Looking nothing like the pictures, we much prefer the local version. The squid was rather chewy and the gravy just didn’t go well with the petai. We would rather spend the $22 on the pork collar anytime.

The rice portion was quite huge, and we didn’t mange to finish it. However, it was too sticky and not fluffy enough.

There is a current promotion of 20% off the chef recommendations mains.
