南機場夜市 Nanjichang Night Market @Taipei

2016-01-07 18.16.23Our first night in Taipei in 2016, and we decided to visit this little local night market (because this was one of two night markets in Taipei that we have not yet been to)!

We have read many blogs and reviews of this night market and had more or less decided on what to try. Nevertheless, we took our time and strolled along. Our first impression was that this night market was not as crowded as the rest and there were plenty of walking space for everyone! We liked that there was a slight breeze and that the weather was not too hot or humid, thanks to a passing shower which provided much of the coolness.

This location is called 南機場 Nanjichang or South Airport because this area used to be an airport used by the Japanese during the Japanese Occupation. Because this was situated on the south of the main 松山機場 Songshan Airport, locals called it South Airport. 🙂

Zaffron Kitchen @East Coast Road

2015-12-20 14.24.40Since we were seldom in this area, we decided to have our lunch here too… And of the many places that G suggested, we thought that Zaffron Kitchen looked pretty interesting.

We ordered a Zaffron Tandoori Platter ($39.50) and Garlic Naan ($4.50) to share… Wanted to try the Masala Tea, but had no idea how to enter it using the tablet menu… Seemed like it was not available.

It was a rather slow wait of close to 25 minutes for our food to arrive… We were hopeful that the food was worth the wait.

We were not disappointed!

The chicken items were tender and not at all dry. The lamb was just mildly gamey, and the fish was tender. The garlic naan was quite fragrant. We were happy with our lunch 🙂

The Carvery @Park Hotel Alexandra

2015-11-16 21.24.22I was around the area these few days and hubby decided to travel all the way here to have dinner together 🙂

Park Hotel Alexandra has just opened recently beside IKEA Alexandra (one of the few up and coming hotels located away from the crowded downtown area). He thought that The Carvery looked pretty good, so he booked a table for two and that was where we were headed!

Located on the 7th floor of the hotel, where the pool was, we enjoyed quite a lovely view of the area. It felt very relaxing to be here! The restaurant was spacious and since it was a weekday, there were not many customers around so we felt like we had the entire restaurant to ourselves!

Five by Five @Thomson V One

2015-10-24 10.38.21We were here so many times but they always ran out of mains or waffles!!

So finally, on a fine Saturday morning, we decided to try just one last time before giving up (they can’t possible run out of mains or waffles from the morning right?)…

And this time, we managed to get seats and food 😀

We were glad that we made the effort to come here again (and again, and again…), because the food was so yummy!

In fact, we returned 4 days later for dinner 😛

THREE by Table Concepts @Seletar Mall

After an early morning movie date on Mars, we popped by THREE for lunch!

With Thai, French and Japanese options available, we were really quite spoilt for choice! Our decisions led us to…

  • Thai Garlic Pork ($9.80++): Served with the refreshing Thai mango salad, the pork was slightly dry but it was quite flavourful and the taste kinda grew on to us as we kept chewing.
  • Penne & Roasted Chicken ($16.80++): The half chicken was really quite huge, and very juicy. The penne was not bad, but it got a little gelat when it cooled off.
  • Signature Duck Leg & Linguine ($23.80++): This was supposed to be the signature, but unfortunately, it was slightly disappointing. The duck confit was quite dry and became really greasy after some time. The Aglio Olio linguine was more spicy than usual, but we liked the texture.
  • Thai Chendol ($6.80++): A rather sweet dessert served with red ruby and jackfruit strips, gula melaka and coconut milk, I really enjoyed the different layers of intense and aromatic flavours. My favourite item of the meal 🙂

Water was self service, and we were seated just next to it, so it was really convenient! There were a few orange slices within the water container, giving the water a slightly refreshing taste.

Overall, some hits and misses, and certainly something different from the usual chain restaurants found in shopping malls.

Malacca 2015 Day 2

2015-10-10 10.37.102015-10-10 11.03.15We took our time in the morning and had a late breakfast at the hotel.

After that, a slow stroll brought us to St Paul’s Hill, and A’ Famosa Fort.

We continued to stroll to the famous landmark of Melaka, Christ Church Melaka before making our way back for lunch at Restoran Nyonya Makko!

We had heard good reviews of Amy Heritage Nyonya Cuisine which is just behind Hatten Hotel but we were not able to get reservations (it’s very very popular!). So we settled for Makko which is also near the hotel and we had been here 5 years ago.

Akanoya Robatayaki @Orchard Parade Hotel

With PSI climbing to hazardous levels, we opted to stay within the hotel. After hanging out at the club lounge, we went to Level 1 to check out the izakaya.

Tak Po @Smith Street

Hubby had read about this supposedly famous dim sum in Chinatown, so we decided to check it out! It was rather crowded on a Friday evening, so instead of joining the queue and waiting for a table within the air-conditioned shop, we chose to take the last remaining outdoor seating. Food was served very quickly, and the staff were also very efficient at clearing the plates; they pop by to pick up the empty plates at least 3 times while we were eating. We also liked that we could order some items such as carrot cake, and custard bun by pieces instead of the usual by the trio style.

福南街 Hock Lam Beef @ION Orchard

One of the non-Japanese options at Orchard ION, we were attracted by the picture of the Angus beef, and decided to have dinner here.

  • Angus Beef Set Meal ($15.90): Braised Australian Angus beef with steamed rice, it was served with braised egg, braised tofu, and orange slices. The beef was  quite tough, what a waste!
  • Beef Tendon Kway Teow Soup ($12.90): We liked that we had the options of selecting kway teow, yellow noodles or thick bee hoon; as well as a choice of superior herbal broth or thick herbal gravy. We took the kway teow with broth, and it was not very memorable.
  • Creamy Butter Chicken ($10.90): We were shocked by the small quantity given the price. The beef items seemed to be more value-for-money. Oh well, at least the fried chicken was not too bad, quite crispy; the pumpkin gravy was quite alright.

In all, it was quite a disappointing meal 😦

台北夜市 2015 Taipei Night Market Part 2

So after our walk at 永康街 Yongkang Street, we decided that we shall conquer a couple of night markets along the 中和新蘆線 Zhonghe Xinglu Line (Line 4) since last night we did the same along the 板南線 Bannan Line (Line 5).

There were a couple of night markets located conveniently along the line, notably 輔大花園觀光夜市 Fuda Flower Night Market located right next to 輔仁大學 Fu Jen University, and 三和夜市 Sanhe Night Market located near to 捷運台北橋站 MRT Taipei Bridge Station.

We had initially planned to come here the day before (Thursday), but realized (only in the afternoon) that 輔大夜市 Fuda Night Market closes on Mondays and Thursdays! To think we had thought that all night markets in Taipei open daily, haha.
