天天到福建炒虾面 @AMK

Yummylicious!

Yummylicious!

After a not quite satisfying dinner, a friend who stayed around this area recommended that we should either try Froz, which was around the corner, but closed on Thursdays, or the apparently very famous Hokkien fried prawn noodles at the nearby market and food centre.

Without further ado, we made our way to the food centre, where only the sinful food stalls were still opened – BBQ satay, fried char kway tiao, and of course, the fried prawn noodles. We were contemplating what to try when suddenly a queue formed in front of the prawn noodles, and since Singaporeans love to queue for food, we made our decision!

The prawn noodles were cooked in batches, and we had to wait a while for a fresh batch to be made. That meant that we had a piping hot plate! The smallest version was $3.50 a plate, and the portion was quite small, but the noodles had soaked up all the delicious seafood broth and was really quite excellent! Do try a little bit of the super potent spicy chilli, which went very well with the noodles, but could be too spicy for some. The chilli was so good that if you wanted extra chilli, it would cost you another $0.50!

Rainbow Cottage Cafe @AMK

Flat White with no art

Flat White with no art

We were very excited to hear of a relatively new cafe opened in Ang Mo Kio, yeah! So today, we especially made reservations for dinner, after reading about the crowds in some reviews.

There were a grand total of 2 other people when we arrived :p But it was a weekday night, so perhaps that was the reason. It was good for us anyway, since we preferred a more quiet environment.

Deco was simple, but they have a small little children’s playground using the small slanted area beneath the staircase, which is complete with small kitchen so small kids can play act-kitchen while the adults indulge in the real food from the real kitchen. 🙂

The Cajun King @Serangoon

Dinner spread!

Dinner spread!

We had walked past The Cajun Kings during our previous trip to Wimbly Lu, and thought that we should check it out 🙂 It was full house during the weekday evening when we visited around 7pm. We did not really feel like eating the combos, so these were what we had:

  • Deviled Crab Cakes ($18++): Easily our favourite of the evening 🙂 Made with claw meat, grated egg, jalapena, and deep fried, the crab cakes were juicy and the crab meat tasted fresh.
  • Very pinkish... no?

    Very pinkish… no?

Lobster Roll ($34++): Supposed to be made from Maine lobster and served with brioche, we still think that Burger & Lobster was way better, and even the one at Market Grill was better. Well, we preferred this than the one we had at Pince & Pints. We did not really like the brioche here.

  • Southern Fried Chicken ($12++): The chicken appeared to be abit under-cooked, and the meat near the bones was very pinkish. The waitress assured us that they were definitely cooked though.

Water is free here, and we also appreciated the long stretch of basin to wash our hands before and after the meal 🙂

Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert 香港盛記甜品 @AMKHub

Steamed Cheong Fun with Minced Pork 蒸港式炸酱肠粉

Steamed Cheong Fun with Minced Pork 蒸港式炸酱肠粉

Signature Combination Noodle 盛记招牌面

Signature Combination Noodle 盛记招牌面

What a flooding day today! We had to look for a place with shelter from the train station and decided that AMKHub was a better bet.

There was a not-too-big Sheng Kee at a quieter corner and we managed to get seats!

So it was a Signature Combination Noodle 盛记招牌面 ($8.50++), Bacon Chicken Roll with Mushroom Sauce Noodle 培根鸡卷菇汁面 ($8.50++) and a Steamed Cheong Fun with Minced Pork 蒸港式炸酱肠粉 ($3.60++) for dinner!

The cheong fun was unexpectedly spicy because of the minced meat 😮 The bacon chicken roll with mushroom sauce noodle was something new, but we still preferred the signature combination noodle, as it had more ingredients 😀

Canto Paradise 樂天小香港 @AMKHub

Never thought that I would knowingly and willingly walk into another restaurant by Paradise Group, having encountered terrible service at 3-4 of their restaurants a few years, but to prove hubby that I’m not that petty, we actually went to Canton Paradise twice in a row! :p Gotta say that the service here is way, way better!

[closed] Thai In Town @Upper Thomson

Thai Wanton Noodle

Thai Wanton Noodle

This is a new place along Upper Thomson, and we thought we should try it before its gone!

Ok lah, to be fair, not many restaurants along this stretch did wind up, but we have seen a few during our recent years of roaming around this stretch!

This restaurant is just beside Huay Kwang Thai and we believed it took over a Malay food stall (which we had tried once).

The interior is simple with cement floors and fixed tables. The interesting part about the tables is that the waiters can put a plank between 2 tables (there are groves along the edge of the tables to fit the plank in) and make it into a table of 4! Of course one can put more planks and turn the tables into one huge communal table. How innovative!

Hualong Fishhead Steamboat 華龍鱼頭爐 @AMK

White beehoon

White beehoon

This is currently the place we go to whenever we have cravings for seafood white beehoon, especially when the queue at Sembawang is really getting far too long.

Located at i Coffee Shop just opposite AMKHub (Blk 347 to be exact), it is fairly easy to get to, and we have always managed to find seats without much hassle.

Hualong Fishhead Steamboat (華龍鱼頭爐) is the zhi char stall, and while we did enjoy the steamboat (which they are famous for), we much preferred the white beehoon! This version is of course, not quite the same as the Sembawang version, however, the $6.50 small version is delicious enough with lots of seafood, like prawns, sotong, and lala, all served on old-school banana leaf!

Yam’s Kitchen @Jalan Leban

Hor Fun Two Ways 严家鸳鸯河粉

Hor Fun Two Ways 严家鸳鸯河粉

This was a relatively new kid on the block, and had replaced a similar restaurant. It always looked quite empty , so we thought we ought to give it a try before it is gone :p

The deco was simple and unpretentious with the tables arranged just like the previous restaurant that it replaced (so we thought it was just a change of name and not owner). But it turned out that this was the 2nd branch of Yam’s Kitchen in Singapore (the other one is in Pasir Ris Downtown East) and there’s also one in Bangkok!

There was an offer for Curry Fish Head ($13.80++ instead of the usual $20.80++ for the small version), provided you spent a minimum of $30, so in addition to the curry, we decided to try the Hor Fun Two Ways 严家鸳鸯河粉 ($8.80++), Gold Medal Otar Bean Curd 金牌乌打豆腐 ($9.80++ for 5 pieces), Golden Sauce with Oat Vegetables  金针香麦菜 ($8.80++) and drinks.

La Pizzaiola @Teacher’s Estate

I was searching for dinner options and chanced upon this Italian restaurant, La Pizzaiola (they have another branch beside Wimbly Lu in Serangoon) which was within the Teacher’s Estate. Funny we didn’t noticed its existence when we frequented a rather delicious fish head curry restaurant that used to be in this area.

We tried one of the specials, Stracciatella with Homemade Bread and Fresh Rockets, the La Pizzaiola Speciale, and Spaghetti alle Vongole.

The Stracciatella (a kind of buttery cheese) was the highlight of the night! The accompanying bread was soft and warm, and when spread with the Stracciatella cheese and topped with the fresh rocket, made each mouthful a bursting happiness of flavours! The La Pizzaiola Speciale was a roast beef pizza and was extremely delicious too! The pizza base was not as thin as we would preferred it to be but it was soft and not as hard as some of the other ones which we have tried elsewhere. The roast beef was a fresh idea which we have not tried before but it blended pretty well with the rocket, the cheese and the tomato base. The pasta, on the other hand, was only marginally better than what we had at Jamie’s… I’m not sure, maybe this was how authentic pasta was supposed to taste like? But we really disliked this type of sticky pasta.

Overall, a pretty satisfied meal and I am sure we will be back for more!

Song Fa Buk Kut Teh @Seletar Mall

Our breakfast spread!

Our breakfast spread!

We had passed by Song Fa Buk Kut Teh in Chinatown Point and were very impressed with the queue! Today, as part of our attempt to stay healthy, we decided to walk to Seletar Mall, where another branch of this very popular bak kut teh chain was located. After a bit of hipcup (such as having shoes disintegrating halfway), we finally arrived at Seletar Mall 🙂

We were too early, so we went to the nearby Ya Kun for some drinks and cheesy French toast. Gotta say that while the coffee and tea were good, the wait for the toast was really long and the actual French toast was more salty than cheesy.

Anyway, at 10.29am, we were back to Song Fa and were amazed a short queue had already formed 😮
