[closed] Thai In Town @Upper Thomson

Thai Wanton Noodle

Thai Wanton Noodle

This is a new place along Upper Thomson, and we thought we should try it before its gone!

Ok lah, to be fair, not many restaurants along this stretch did wind up, but we have seen a few during our recent years of roaming around this stretch!

This restaurant is just beside Huay Kwang Thai and we believed it took over a Malay food stall (which we had tried once).

The interior is simple with cement floors and fixed tables. The interesting part about the tables is that the waiters can put a plank between 2 tables (there are groves along the edge of the tables to fit the plank in) and make it into a table of 4! Of course one can put more planks and turn the tables into one huge communal table. How innovative!

Jalan Kayu The Prata Cafe @United Square

Prata is much more satisfying

Prata is much more satisfying

After a super dissatisfying dinner, we decided to go for something sinful. And prata it is!!

Order a Mushroom and Cheese Prata ($3.40), Kopi-C Kosong ($1.80) and Teh-Cino less sweet ($2.10).

The kopi had a strange burnt taste, but it was still way nicer than the look-like-tea-but-taste-like-water-with-milk drink that I had. Gosh! Was tonight destined to be a night of terrible food?

Thankfully, the prata was freshly made and was warm and crispy, so we felt a bit less aggrieved…

[closed] Song Yuan Bak Kut Teh 松远 @Goldhill Shopping Centre

Note: Song Yuan BKT has ceased operations at this location.

Thin and few slices

Thin and few slices

粉肠,粉肠,没粉怎么叫粉肠?

粉肠,粉肠,没粉怎么叫粉肠?

We had a craving for bak kut teh and decided to check out this place… Though the lack of crowd was a bit worrying, haha! There was also no prime ribs soup option… So… We had a few questions marks in our mind :p

We ordered a Pork Ribs Soup ($6), Braised Pig’s Intestines ($6), Bean Curd Skin ($3), Kai Lan ($4) and a bowl of Steamed Rice ($1).

The pork ribs soup looked quite sad with 5 tiny ribs floating inside, but the braised pig’s intestines looked even sadder… Haha… The soup was quite salty, and the meat was quite tough… There were even pieces with more bone than meat. The intestines were not cleaned thoroughly as there was a stinky taste to it, and somehow, the insides of the intestines were gone!! 粉肠,粉肠,没粉怎么叫粉肠? Disappointed!!

The kai lan was a bit better, but there was just too much sauce, so it was quite salty. The best dish was actually the bean curd skin… *faintz* Rice was quite a huge portion, we both could not finish it. While the rice was not overly tough, you might want to add some soup or gravy to soften it a bit…

We are not coming back here again 😦

Baker’s Well @East Coast Road

Cosy after dinner set

Cosy after dinner set

Since we were rarely in this region, so we thought of searching for a resting place after my disappointing dinner, and hubby was attracted by this little sign board that said “We used Yahava coffee beans here” and suddenly, I found myself in Baker’s Well 😛

Ordered a Flat White with Carrot Cake Set ($9.10, note the set is cake with Americano for $7.50 and top up the difference for upgrading of drink), and a Hot Lemongrass Drink ($3.20).

Oooh! The lemongrass drink was very fragrant! I think they overdid the sugar though, because it reminded me of sugarcane drink 😮 The coffee was aromatic but quite acidic.. A good complement to the cake.

This has gotta be the nicest version of carrot cake that I have ever tried; not overly sweet or moist, and is more dense than other versions. I loved the nutty-ness, and the cake was topped with 4 huge walnuts! Now I just want to try the rest of the cakes…

Ramen Keisuke Tonkotsu King Matsuri 豚骨王 祭@Parkway Parade

Awaodori Special

Awaodori Special

We were very keen to try out this place as each ramen shop serves its own distinctive style of ramen. The queue was quite short, and we managed to get seats with 20 minutes, which was not bad at all, considering that it was a weekend evening.

We quickly decided on the Awaodori Special and Nebuta Special (each $18.90++). While waiting, we enjoyed some hard boiled eggs and marinated bean sprouts, which were freely available at each table. We even saw some customers making their own concoction of egg mayonnaise! We also rather enjoyed grinding the sesame, which really added an aromatic flavor to the ramen.

The Nebuta Special was made using a mixture of pork and fish stock, and was lighter in taste, as compared to Awaodori Special. Unfortunately, the meat was so tough that I gave up eating it after a while. On the other hand, the Awaodori had very tender meat! Frankly, I was quite disappointed with my meal 😦

Hualong Fishhead Steamboat 華龍鱼頭爐 @AMK

White beehoon

White beehoon

This is currently the place we go to whenever we have cravings for seafood white beehoon, especially when the queue at Sembawang is really getting far too long.

Located at i Coffee Shop just opposite AMKHub (Blk 347 to be exact), it is fairly easy to get to, and we have always managed to find seats without much hassle.

Hualong Fishhead Steamboat (華龍鱼頭爐) is the zhi char stall, and while we did enjoy the steamboat (which they are famous for), we much preferred the white beehoon! This version is of course, not quite the same as the Sembawang version, however, the $6.50 small version is delicious enough with lots of seafood, like prawns, sotong, and lala, all served on old-school banana leaf!

Yam’s Kitchen @Jalan Leban

Hor Fun Two Ways 严家鸳鸯河粉

Hor Fun Two Ways 严家鸳鸯河粉

This was a relatively new kid on the block, and had replaced a similar restaurant. It always looked quite empty , so we thought we ought to give it a try before it is gone :p

The deco was simple and unpretentious with the tables arranged just like the previous restaurant that it replaced (so we thought it was just a change of name and not owner). But it turned out that this was the 2nd branch of Yam’s Kitchen in Singapore (the other one is in Pasir Ris Downtown East) and there’s also one in Bangkok!

There was an offer for Curry Fish Head ($13.80++ instead of the usual $20.80++ for the small version), provided you spent a minimum of $30, so in addition to the curry, we decided to try the Hor Fun Two Ways 严家鸳鸯河粉 ($8.80++), Gold Medal Otar Bean Curd 金牌乌打豆腐 ($9.80++ for 5 pieces), Golden Sauce with Oat Vegetables  金针香麦菜 ($8.80++) and drinks.

+39 Gelato Bar @Circular Road

We could not find any coffee place around the area and were almost going to call it a day when we spotted this gelato place… Woohoo! They do serve coffee 🙂 So we decided on a Waffle with Hazelnut and Pistachio ($13+), while hubby got himself an Expresso Deluxe ($4.50+)… Latte was not available because the milk steamer was down.

Waffle with Hazelnut and Pistachio

Waffle with Hazelnut and Pistachio

Expresso Deluxe

Expresso Deluxe

Woo! This has gotta be the crispiest and most aromatic waffles we ever had, inside out! It was abit overdone though, as the waffle was slightly bitter as it was burnt. However, the gelato made up for it! Super creamy and smooth, we totally loved it! The hazelnut one was sweeter but absolutely nutty, while the pistachio one was less intense in flavour.

The expresso came with cold milk, unfortunately… and came rather late too, as they had forgotten the order. Still, it was not too shabby a drink, strong but not acidic.

Overall, a pretty enjoyable after-dinner indulgence 🙂

Grill Garden @The Central

Funny how there are so many buffet restaurants here at The Central!

Wanting to have something not too heavy, we chanced upon Grill Garden. It was a small shop without GST and service charge, so the prices look very affordable! Oh, and each main comes with fruit and salad!

We decided to order the Boneless Grilled Chicken Whole Leg with Baguette ($7.70), a Thai style Pork Chop ($10.80), and Bacon Asparagus ($3.90) to share. Water is chargeable at $0.30 but refillable.

Sunday Folks @Holland Village

It was dessert time! We decided to try coming to Sunday Folks again, after a few failed attempts due to the super long queue. Despite being a Saturday, we managed to get seats within 5 minutes, yeah!!

Waffle with Ice Cream

Waffle with Ice Cream

Flat White

Flat White

We quickly decided on a Regular-sized Waffle, topped with Ice Cream (sea salt with gula melaka) ($11.80), and a Flat White ($5).

The coffee is quite acidic, but went well with the strong aromatic flavour. The soft serve ice cream was quite yummy! And strangely, it reminded me of this long chewy candy that mummy used to buy when we were young. The waffle was crispy with a soft interior, and hubby was very pleased with it.

Overall, a nice place for ice cream and waffles! 🙂 Now we are inspired to go to Phoon Huat next door to buy some ingredients to make our own waffles at home 🙂
