Teng Bespoke Japanese Vegetarian Dining @Sunshine Plaza

We were intending to go check out Clinton Street Bakery, but passed by Sunshine Plaza and decided to pop in to see if Victor’s Kitchen was available. Oh well, the queue was very long!

We then recalled seeing a Japanese vegetarian restaurant, that we also wanted to try out. The restaurant was split into 2 sides, and has apparently expanded beyond this, as one of staff guided the customers to somewhere out there to their tables 😮 So popular! We were lucky to secure a table as some customers were leaving. We decided to try some of the ala carte items:

Just Want Coffee @Everton Park

We popped over to Just Want Coffee for coffee, as we had read good reviews online 🙂

Hubby tried Ethopia ($7 nett), which had a soft citrus acidity, sweet Jasmine body, with aromatic mango tea finish (according to the menu), and I decided on a Tiramisu ($7).

The coffee indeed had lovely citrus notes to it, and it was very aromatic! The aftertaste swirled inside our mouths, and it was absolutely delightful!

The Tiramisu had a “high rum content” warning in the menu, and it truly lived up to its warning. Served freezing cold, it was yummylicious!! Super high!!!

There was free WiFi available, and an air purifier right by the entrance, so we hid here away as the PSI index continued to climb… There was also a collection of books here, and I read the very funny The Three Little Pigs Lah (favourite Singlish tales) peppered with Singlish all over!

Note: Only cash payment are accepted here at both places. You can help yourselves to the jugs of water at the station next to cashier counter.

Batterworks Bakery & Cafe @Everton Park

[UPDATE: Batterworks has ceased operation at Everton Park wef 18 Oct 2015]

Din Tai Fung @nex

There was this promotion on Amex cards for DTF so we decided to come here for dinner after running out of options (aka too lazy to think, haha…)

  • 上海醉鸡 Original Shanghainese Drunken Chicken ($8++): This was a cold dish that we always order at DTF and it didn’t fail us. Chicken was tender and juicy in the wine sauce.
  • 干拌菜肉馄饨 Vegetables and Pork Wanton tossed in well-seasoned Chicken Broth ($8.5++): Hubby wanted some wanton and this was pretty good.
  • 酥脆腐皮虾饼 Crispy Golden Prawn Pancake ($10.30++): A tad too oily.
  • 小笼包 Steamed Pork Dumplings ($7.80++ for 6 pieces): The usual which didn’t fail too.
  • 松露小笼包 Steamed Truffle & Pork Dumplings ($5++ per piece): Something different that we tried. The truffle smell permeated the dumplings but the skin was a tad too thick.
  • 蒜炒菠菜 Stir-fried Spinach with Garlic ($10.80++): Another staple and refresher to the palette after all the meat.
  • 辣蟹鲜肉包 Steamed Chilli Crab & Pork Bun (S2++ per piece): Very spicy and hot!
  • 茉莉花茶 Hot Jasmin Tea ($1++ per pax, free flow)

Food was generally ok, and DTF maintained their usual consistency in food taste and quality.

Paul Bakery @Westgate

It was a full loop, where we took the shuttle service from IMM back to Westgate, and decided to end our night at Paul Bakery, which was just next to Cafe Crema.

We got ourselves a lovely 2-seater by the corner, and we liked the pleasant environment!

Hubby had an original Shakerato ($7.50++), which was served with whipped cream. This version was quite nice, though not as strong as the one we had in Hong Kong.

My Rosemary Lime Iced Tea ($7.50++) was very refreshing, and quite light in flavour.

Most of the tarts and cakes were sold out by 9pm, so we settled for a Raspberry Tart ($7.90++). We enjoyed the nice balance of sweet and tartness, and the pastry was deliciously buttery.

Note that iced and warm water was served for free, which was great, because we were so thirsty despite our drink 😛

With this lovely supper, we ended our day trip to the West 🙂

Liang Peng Bak Kut Teh 亮憑肉骨茶 @IMM

Our legs were near breaking point by the time we reached IMM Building, so we decided that it was time for an early dinner. This place looked rather lively, so we thought of trying out some of the stuff:

  • 龙骨肉骨茶 Loin Ribs Soup ($9.50+ GST): This rib meat is supposed to be superior to the normal pork rib. Somehow, this one had tougher meat than usual. The soup was very very peppery, and did not have much of other flavours.
  • 卤鸭 Quarter Braised Duck ($15+): Errr.. We were deciding between the pig’s trotters and braised duck, and decided on the latter, after doing an eyeball survey of what other diners were having. It seemed like no one was having the pig’s trotter. This turned out to be a huge mistake, because the duck meat was so, so dry! We were lucky enough to get the quarter with the drum stick, so that portion was not as dry as the rest of the meat… Sigh.
  • 豆干 Beancurd ($2+): This was probably the best item of the meal.
  • 卤大肠头 Braised Pig’s Big Intestines ($6+ for small portion): The intestines were cleaned properly, which was good, but they were not flavourful enough.

The gravy used in all the side dishes had a strange 沙茶 taste to it, and we did not really like it.

Cafe Crema @Westgate

We did a journey to the West today, after casting our vote for the future (or the next 5 years) of Singapore!

Did some shopping at JEM before heading over to Westgate for a bite.

In the end, Cafe Crema caught our eye, because we were in need of some good coffee!

Hubby ordered a Flat White ($6 inclusive of GST) and we shared the Big Bad Wolf ($16).

The Flat White was served in a huge cup! Smooth and slightly acidic, it was not bad. But there was no latte art, so hubby was a bit sad… How come we see so many pictures of coffee with latte art here? On hindsight, maybe we should have tried the signature Piccolo Latte.

The Big Bad Wolf was huge, and perfect for sharing. Use your hands and stuff everything into your mouth; the combination of breaded pork cutlet, smoked ham, crispy bacon, egg mayo, and buttered Brioche, was simply awesome. Taken apart, they don’t taste quite as good. The sandwich came with a side serving of chips (like those potato chips in a bag), and a salad with a slightly sweet but rather addictive dressing.

Note: Water is freely available at the side station.

Canto Paradise 樂天小香港 @AMKHub (again)

We were back again because of the Groupon offer, and so was the rest of the world 😛

Luckily we were there around 7pm, so it was a short 10 minutes wait. The queue just kept growing after that. This time, we tried the following:

Anti:dote @Fairmount Singapore

Apparently a rather popular place for afternoon tea, Anti:dote made it to a few lists for top places to go for afternoon tea, and so this was where we decided to go! At $45++ per person, and non-refillable, it seemed a little pricey, but based on past experience, we would probably be too full from one round.

We made reservations 3 days prior, and received an email confirmation within hours 🙂 Also, I made a request to get a table at a quiet corner as it was somebody’s special celebrations!

The Daily Scoop Ice Cream Cafe @Holland Village

There are two very popular places for ice cream along the same stretch of Chip Bee Garden, namely The Sunday Folks and The Daily Scoop. We walked past an empty The Daily Scoop around 13:30, only to realise that this place is opened from 14:00. A few shops ahead, there was a rather long queue at Sunday Folks! Anyway, our destination was Phoon Huat, so we happily whisked past the crowd queuing in the rather hot and humid weather, and entered the air-conditioned Phoon Huat in bliss.

Well, there was only that much we could shop in Phoon Huat, and 20 minutes later, we left with our purchases. Pretty nice timing for some delicious waffles at The Daily Scoop!
